I finished! Now to get back a [if i ever had one] normal life.
For the last five days or so when i was not at work or passed out from exhaustion i have worked on a lady friend's computer that she wanted to give to her son.
I don't know how old it is, but it had windows 95 on it. i went over their to run a few updates and to get it ready for her son to use. everthing went well until i pushed the on button.
As we tried to loadup the dialup software the mouse died. It turned out to be the serial ports on the motherboard.
No serial mouse card in this town and we wanted her son to have this computer to use for one of his christmas gifts. Somewhere along this point i remembered that windows 95 was no longer supported by microsoft.
I brought the rattling piece of shit home. At first i thought the mouse problem was in the software and his mother had a disk alleged to be win 98se.. it was not it was win 98 1st edition which sucks big time.
Now see here, i do not know ms doss. and i know less about it now! I can tell you this when you format your hard drive, most CD rom drives are not supported my your installation disk. I know a sony cdu-55e is not for sure and trying to find the doss drivers and the doss commands on the internet is a real S-O-B of a job.
many thanks to my brother {mike} inlaw in florida, he helped as best he could on the phone.
It took some time to load windows 98 I suck edition. the mouse still did not work. Than i tried every test anyone i could find might come up with. The serial ports on the mother board were as dead as a hammer.
I found a usb port card at circuit city and installed it. Some how i managed to disconnect the fucking keyboard from the software.
With no keyboard and no mouse i was begaining to talk to god about the way he was running my life.
I was lucky enough to have a unused copy of win 98 se laying around, so i used the instalation floppy[after about four hours i hit on the right combonation to load the drivers for the cd rom again. After another for hours and a phone call to florida, spanked win 98se into loading.
Guess what. When THE DAMN COMPUTER finally reconized the usb port and the mouse it did not like the any of the drivers on the cdrom that came with it. We are talking microsoft optical usb wheel mouse here not some off the wall brand. It than asked for my win 98se disk, so i put that into the cdrom. It said the autoload feature was missing!
I took the disk out reached down and turned the computer off and went for a walk for awhile. When my blood pressure returned to somewhere near normal i turned the computer back on and the mouse worked! Oh happy day!
I spent the next several days loading fixes and updates and programs to protect and help with the young boy's computer experience. Then came the time when i was finished.
My wife wanted the mouse back so she could give it to her father; so she went and bought another and cheaper ptical mouse for my friends son to use. Yes, i know you can see it coming.
That computer did not like the new mouse on bit. Neither myself or my wife could get it to work. it only took me about five hours to get the microsoft optical mouse working again. All together i spent about thirty something hours on this little project.
I loaded the computer into my truck and delivered it last night about seven-thirtyish.
My friend wanted to know when she would get 98 se loaded on her computer.
Not anytime soon i can assure you!
