To all readers who love large breasts...so do I. Having said that, there have been many stories I have started to read, come across a ridiculous bra size on a character, gotten annoyed and stopped reading. I'm assuming most of these are written by men since (hopefully) most women know how the sizes work. So gentlemen here is some info:

The number (32, 34, etc) refers to the measurement under the breasts around the woman's rib cage.
The letter is the cup size. To configure the cup size you take the measurement under the breasts and then measure over the fullest part of the breast. If this measurement is:
1 inch bigger - A cup
2 inches bigger - B cup

and so on. I have seen so many stories in which the author is describing a skinny girl with big breasts and says she wears a 38DD or (just today) a 44EE. If she wears a size 44 bra, there's no way she's skinny. Please keep this in mind while writing.

Those stories aren't clinical studies. They are shooting for arousal through exaggerated imagery. And most likely the readers they are targeting their stories to realize (and appreciate) that.

Depends who you compare to. Compare to an average Asian and you have to go <32 for skinny. Compare to the average American, and 38-44 well that could very well qualify as skinny.

And besides, it's not that straightforward either!

Hhull, I agree with you. Breast sizes are an art not a science and differ wildly between manufacturer and retailer. Recently there has been a trend by manufacturers to reduce backstrap sizes in order to increase cup sizes.

Again, ribcage measurement doesn't normally increase after adulthood. Your ribcage doesn't get fatter even if all the rest starts to sag.

Writers might also want to be aware that cup sizes at E and forward in the alphabet are just a way to avoid repetitions of more Ds (at least in the US system).

AA = 0 difference
A = +<1"
B = +1"
C = +2"
D = +3"
E = DD (Or +4" difference between band and fullest breast part)
F = DDD (+5")
G = DDDD (+6")
H = DDDDD (+7")
etc.

As illustrated, each addition of a D (or progression to the next letter) indicates another inch difference between the band size and the measurement across the fullest part of the breasts.

The progression above of D, E, F, G, H, etc. is the system commonly found with US manufacturers and retailers.

In the UK and Australia the progression is

0" = AA
<1" = A
1" = B
2" = C
3" = D
4" = DD
5" = E
6" = F
7" = FF
8" = G
9" = GG
10" = H
11" = HH
12" = J
13" = JJ
14" = K
15" = KK
16" = L
17" + = Holy shit!

I have always found it endlessly amusing, and hopelessly unfair, that so many men seem to want a woman to defy the very standards of femininity to be considered attractive as a female. Yes, I suppose it's possible for a woman to be one-hundred and twenty pounds with DD breasts and an ass big enough that you could use it to hide from the rain, but it's terribly unlikely. What's more, even if such specimens exist, their rarity makes them more of a subspecies, and isn't the point of a man reading a sex story about women because he's--I don't know--attracted to women, actual women, that he might encounter and have the pleasure of interacting with?

Thankfully, women come in a delicious variety of shapes and sizes, each offering peculiarities that are refreshing and intoxicating. Fetishist aside--not a knock, I believe fetishes are wonderful and exciting a great deal of the time--it just makes little sense that men want women to be unrealistically proportioned in such ways, and is as strange as wanting one with a small head and uncommonly large ears or short with huge feet. Personally speaking, give me a real woman, proportionate and anatomically unremarkable--whether that be a thick girl with large breasts and an earth-moving bottom, or a slender woman with sharp hips and a neck like a swan--and I will devour them greedily and feel fortunate for the experience.

All very useful information and opinions. I love breasts but I am not breast-centric. I like them in all sizes and have found then sexy from nearly flat to rather amazingly big. I think the caveat is that giving a size, usually generously numbered and cupped, is meant to tell the reader that the female character has bigger breasts, and that is sexier, or the male character finds them and her sexier because of the size. It is forcing the issue. That may be advisable for fetish oriented stories or if it is a vital fact, but as a reader I merely need to know if they are average, bigger, smaller, etc. I prefer to imagine the breasts I like best.

I have really wondered about bust inflation. Much like a 36 inch waist for me is now a 34 inch waist at some retailers in the US (GAP).

Do US or other retailers try to "up your cup" to make you want their product? This of course assumes you want big tits, which is a question in and of itself. And of course bra sizes change with age and weight. So finding you have moved from a 32A to 34B may be size inflation or just changes in your body.

What I really want to know is, if men like big tits, are woman's tits getting bigger due to selection?

I doubt this. I think that there is disruptive selection (selection for, say big and small tits at the same time).

This may be due to my own likes. I love big tits like most men. I also love A's, but mainly with nice, hard nipples..

At any rate, let me know what data you have that I can verify. Yea, by verify I don't mean checking you out, but I sure don't mind.

For some reason that really doesn't suprise me.

From speaking to male friends, the general consensus amongst them seemed to suggest that 'a handful is best, any more and its a waste', but they definitely wanted a full handful from the sound of it! Although these are all guys my age, so 18-21 ish - do preferences change with age?

I'm probably one of the strange ones, in that I don't necessarily think bigger is better, just as long as they are soft and warm, although I do admit I like B's or C's (ie, some breast) as opposed to A's (practically no breast).

In my writing, I don't go for specific sizes. That to me just complicates the writing of a story. I'm a guy so obviously I don't wear a bra, and I don't make it a habit to ask women about their bra size. So I usually don't describe specific sizes in a female character's breasts.

But that's just my two cents.

I dunno. I mean, I've read National Geographic, and women from braless societies seem to suffer the effects of gravity gracelessly, yeah?

Perhaps, there seems a certain logic to what the French scientist says. All our muscles atrophy if we don't exercise them so why not breast muscles? The fatty matter in the breast is equivalent to the pot belly on guys. I see them all bouncing in the gym.

Everything starts sagging and heading South as we get older but this froggy scientist says it is less pronounced in women who never wore a bra.

Before the days of Mrs Phelps and her invention of the brassiere as a corset, aristocrat females employed wet nurses to succour their babies to avoid sag. It is well documented that nothing has a more long-term damaging effect on breast muscles than breast-feeding. Hence the reliance on support.
