Boring Ass Political Question

But can a candidate enter the race at any time? Or is there a cut off date. (Don't need to be too specific here - I just need to know if Say August would be too late?)

Sorry to do this again, but can anyone help me with that final question?

Thanks Bigdog, but I'm not entirely sure if that applies to the situation I'm thinking of. It looks to me like that's more about people trying to be the reperatentative of a party. I'm only really interested in true independents.

For example, a guy like Ross Perot walks off the street and decides to run for President. Is there a cut off date for him to be nominated to run? Since he's representing only himself, and not a party, he doesn't have to win anyones support. If he meets the requirements and can pay the fees, he can run and noone can stop that, right?

But could he enter the race AFTER the Primaries for the other candidates? Is there a cut off date to join the race? (And if so, do you have a rough idea of when it is?)

CB is correct - in fact Perot (who just simply started his own party for the 1992 election) had a difficult time getting on the ballot in every state, and in 1996 and 2000 the reform party was unable to do that. I dont know about the time limits, but as a practical matter it just couldnt happen. One would have to be entered well in advance of the primaries, so a rule of thumb is about 18 months before the election.Without a party organization it would be impossible to even get on the ballot, although a votor can write in a name for his choice. Rarely has a write-in candidate been elected, but it has happenned in local elections
