Books on rape

Me too but I was torn on the subject.

Will the petition not just give more publicity to this pathetic individual. Without the furore would anyone have even heard of his book. I'm not sure that the petitions are not just a clever social media marketing ploy. "my methods are so good, these people don't want you to read about them."

And so it begins. Censorship.

. Censorship by the government is unconstitutional.

And while the subject matter is reprehensible, I find the act of censorship just as repulsive.

Does that imply that it's OK in the Rest of the World ?

Some forms of censorship are necessary for the continuance of life.
Actions censored include Murder, Theft and so on.
Can't live without it.

After having been beaten up by one man and raped by another, I have no qualms about signing this petition. I've lost count of the number of women I know who have been raped. When I read about men like this who are not only teaching others how to abuse women, and even more, are making money off of it, I'd like to throw up or shoot the vile bastard. The petition is a reasonable alternative.

Do rapists really buy how-to books?

Probably more the other way round: people who buy books like this may be encouraged to rape as a result.

There's a lot of research out there showing that men's attitudes towards rape are very strongly influenced by how their male peers discuss it; if a friend or self-appointed "guru" tells them that it's okay to ignore a woman's lack of consent, they'll act accordingly.

That's it, taken out of context you can make anything look foolish...

The definition was stated by a strictly American organization...government in this context is the US.

The definition is...

Censorship, the suppression of words, images, or ideas...

There is no mention of actions. Murder, Theft, etc. are actions.

The twinkie defense...

I grew up watching television and going to see some pretty gruesome movies...

I didn't turn in to a killer or a rapist.

And you are free to do so...that is your first amendment right or whatever law covers your freedom of speech right in the country in which you live.

But you have to realize that you by your exercise of your freedom, could be limiting someone else's freedom.

Lets see how this sounds when you replace the "You" with the real people.

But you (Someone who has been raped) have to realize that you (Someone who has been raped) by your exercise of your freedom, could be limiting someone else's (Someone advocating and condoning rape) freedom.

Kind of a dumb statement either way.

One has to wonder how he would react if the same were done to him. Find some bug, burly gay guys to talk him, catch him alone on the street, then forcibly rip his pants off and have a go at him.

You read my mind. And do it on private property to test his views on his own proposal.

The problem was that as soon as the charge of rape was made, the accused name was released to the press. In his efforts to clear his name he uncovered CCTV footage of the alleged victim, happily shopping for sex toys, with the alleged rapist, the day after the alleged attack.
The girl was Bi-polar and took her own life.
In my opinion a tragedy all round. It highlighted the problems of the accuser having full anonymity while the accused faces the glare of publicity.

NB since some politician (I forget his name) suffered the same lack of anonymity compared to his accuser, the powers-that-be are now looking to change this situation.

Censorship does have limits and these can adapt to changes in society; compare 1960s and 1970s TV & Film with what is on offer now.

But some things belong firmly Beyond the Pale, eg books on bomb-making, possession of which will earn you Porridge, even if you don't act on the instructions. I'd be happy to put Roosh BTP.

I can only say if that's the way you want to phrase it that's up to you, but I wouldn't. But then again I don't want to take someone's freedom away.

Books on bomb making are not illegal to own, or sell for that matter. You can buy them at Amazon today and have them in your hot little bomb making hands tomorrow.

At least not illegal here in the US.

This isn't a freedom issue. Unless a government bans books, then you have an argument.

Anyone can write a book. That freedom is inherent and can't be regulated.

Anyone can try to sell a book - and then market forces go to work. If enough people complain he won't get a publisher. His freedom isn't abridged by that; he can still express his views. He's just not going to make a lot of money with it.

The joy and horror of the Internet is that anyone can self-publish, so he's not even beholden to publishers to express his views. He has perfect freedom to express himself. Unless , again, it's judged so hateful that his ideas are actually made illegal. But that's unlikely here and should be very rare in general.

And let's face it - these aren't his views. Maybe 85% of what he writes is real to him, but the utterly outrageous claims (legalize rape on private property, etc) are pure publicity. It'might work for him - look at this thread. You're all his advertisers now.

"Oh, how horrid!"
"Really? Wow, gotta check that out..."

Marketing at work, people.

In the UK people have been banged-up just for downloading The Anarchists Cookbook.

Of course we also have never been able to buy bullets from Wal-Mart (we call it ASDA in the UK).

And for heaven's sake, people are venting over a text that borders on rape advice on a site where the biggest category is incest, about the only thing out there more fucked up than rape. Who here is calling for a Lit boycott? Clearly everyone here believes that writing doesn't affect behavior. So what is this about again?
