I'll go along with that. Anglicised French imports get their vowels fiddled with. Another example is the word "beef", which originally was "boeuf", the French word for "cow".

I'm not sure why they call it that, and it confused the heck out of me the first time I performed this act as a teenager. I remember the guy looking down and asking, "What are you doing?" hehe The answer (if I'd bothered to take it out of my mouth) would have been, "Trying to figure out what enjoyment you're getting out of me BLOWING."
