I'm astonished. I just looked up "blithering" in the OED, and here's what it said:
blithering
• adjective (informal): complete; utter: a blithering idiot.
Now excuse me, but I thought that "blithering" came from "blathering", which means to blather or talk nonsense. Since when does it mean "complete" or "utter"?
Does that mean that you can treat something with blithering contempt? Or be blitheringly devastated?
I'm blitheringly confused.
