Although President Donald Trump often rails against the mainstream media
and insists that countless journalists are out to get him, he and his officials
will manipulate or deceive major news outlets whenever they can get away
with it.

July 16, 2020

This week, two such outlets have apologized for letting Trump officials get away
with lying: USA Today and National Public Radio.

- Alex Henderson July 16, 2020

Bill Sternberg, USA Today’s editorial page editor, is now saying that some
of Peter Navarro’s anti-Fauci claims don’t hold up when fact-checked.

For example, Navarro wrote:
In late January, when I was making the case on behalf of the president
to take down the flights from China, Fauci fought against the president’s
courageous decision — which might well have saved hundreds of thousands
of American lives.

USA Today’s Ledyard King King:
“There’s no evidence of a large-scale effort by the Trump administration to mobilize
supplies for the pandemic as early as February, although experts contend that a forceful
response then would likely have limited the spread and saved lives. Trump said little in
public about the virus during that time period and downplayed the the threat.”

Meanwhile, on NPR’s website, Public Editor Kelly McBride criticized the outlet
for letting Attorney General Bill Barr get away with lying during a “Morning Edition”
segment that aired on June 26 and was hosted by reporter Steve Inskeep.
That day, McBride writes, NPR listeners “heard U.S. Attorney General Barr
falsely declare that mail-in ballots will jeopardize the security of the upcoming
presidential election.”

Barr told NPR

There’s so many occasions for fraud there that cannot be policed.
I think it would be very bad. But one of the things I mentioned
would be the possibility of counterfeiting.

McBride writes:
“I agree with the audience members who have cried foul at how this was presented."

With No Final Say, Trump Wants To Change Who Counts For Dividing Up Congress' Seats

President Trump departs a July 2019 press conference on the census with U.S. Attorney
General William Barr (center) and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross
in the White House Rose Garden

President Trump is signing a memorandum Tuesday that calls for an unprecedented change
to the constitutionally mandated count of every person living in the country — the exclusion
of immigrants living here without legal permission from the numbers used to divide up seats
in Congress among the states.

"...the move by the president, who does not have final authority over the census,
is more likely to spur legal challenges and political spectacle in the last months
before this year's presidential election than a transformation of the once-a-decade
head count."

Legal experts slam Trump’s ‘blatantly unconstitutional’ attempt to corrupt the census

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a memorandum declaring undocumented
immigrants are not to be counted when the number of U.S. Representatives for each
state is allotted. That process, called “apportionment,” occurs every ten years after the
official national census is conducted.

The U.S. Constitution mandates the census, which is being conducted this year, count
“the whole number of persons in each state.” It makes no distinction as to their citizenship
status.

The move follows a hard-fought campaign by the Trump administration to add
a citizenship question to the census. The Supreme Court blocked Trump in that
fight and it was not included.

The Constitution says:
“Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according
to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of PERSONS in
each state.”

Trump says undocumented immigrants aren’t “persons” under the Constitution.
That’s Dred Scott stuff.

Judge denies Oregon attorney general’s motion to restrict federal police actions

Jul 24, 2020

Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum had urged the judge to bar federal officers from
engaging in “unconstitutional police state-type tactics,” alleging they have violated
the rights of protesters to exercise free expression and assembly, be free from
unreasonable search and seizure and receive due process.

Jann Carson, interim executive director of the ACLU of Oregon, was dismayed
by Mosman’s decision but vowed to keep the pressure on the federal forces.

“While the decision in the state’s lawsuit is disappointing, federal agents should not for
a minute think their unconstitutional actions will go unanswered,” she said in a
statement. “The ACLU will be in court again to hold federal agents accountable
for their unconstitutional attacks on the right to protest.”

Rep. John R. Lewis worked to make the dream of another, to come into reality-

John Lewis spent 15 years fighting for the museum — now the dream is realized

September 15, 2016

Rep. Mickey Leland (D-Tex.) discovered that the most recent legislative efforts to have
the museum built in Washington, DC, had run aground a few years earlier because of an
attempt by Rep. Clarence Brown (R-Ohio) and Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio) to take the

ended his fight to make it happen. Rep. John R. Lewis took up his fight for the museum,

1619 Project

There are Republicans that are fighting against the New York Times' 1619 Project.

“The 1619 Project” from The New York Times refers to the year that the first enslaved
people were brought to the U.S. and looks at how slavery continues to shape every aspect
of American culture.

Arkansas Republican senator Tom Cotton is serving as the figurehead and face of
the Saving American History Act of 2020 and “would prohibit the use of federal funds
to teach the 1619 Project by K-12 schools or school districts”, according to a statement
from the senator’s office.

Nikole Hannah-Jones, who was awarded this year’s Pulitzer Prize for commentary for her
introductory essay to the 1619 Project, said on Friday that Cotton’s bill “speaks to the power
of journalism more than anything I’ve ever done in my career”.

On Sunday, she tweeted: “If chattel slavery – heritable, generational, permanent, race-based
slavery where it was legal to rape, torture, and sell human beings for profit – were a
‘necessary evil’ as Tom Cotton says, it’s hard to imagine what cannot be justified if it is
a means to an end.

“Imagine thinking a non-divisive curriculum is one that tells black children the buying
and selling of their ancestors, the rape, torture, and forced labor of their ancestors for
PROFIT, was just a ‘necessary evil’ for the creation of the ‘noblest’ country the world
has ever seen.

“So, was slavery foundational to the Union on which it was built, or nah? You heard it
from Tom Cotton himself.”

John Lewis took the mix-ups in stride. Standing next to a portrait of Rep. Elijah,Cummings

Trump fires Tennessee Valley Authority chair in push against foreign workers

August 3, 2020

(Presiderp) Trump told reporters on Monday-

that he had fired Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) chair Skip Thompson
after signing an executive order that targeted the federally owned company
for outsourcing jobs to foreign countries.

What they're saying:

"All TVA employees are U.S. based citizens. All jobs related to TVA’s Information
Technology department must be performed by in the U.S. by individuals who may
legally work in this country," the company said in response to the president.

Alabama, a customer-

There was some confusion, as the president also railed about the pay for the TVA’s
chief executive and demanded his pay -- now $8 million, Trump said -- be trimmed
to no more than $500,000.

Trump told reporters at the White House that he was formally removing the authority’s
chair of the board and another member of the board, and he threatened to remove
other board members if they keep hiring foreign labor.

An Alabamian is chair of the TVA board. James “Skip” Thompson of Decatur,
is the president and CEO of Corporate Billing, a subsidiary of National Bank
of Commerce, Birmingham. Previously, he served as the president and CEO
of both First American Bank in Decatur and First Commercial Bank in Huntsville,
as well as serving on the board of Decatur Utilities. His term expires May 18, 2021.

Trump made the announcement as he signed an executive order to require all
federal agencies to complete an internal audit to prove they are not replacing
qualified American workers with people from other countries.

Trump said the authority was replacing many of its in-house technology workers
with contractors who rely heavily on foreign workers under the H1-B visa program

Trump meets with tech workers and signs executive order on 'hiring American'

As Trump was meeting with workers who would shortly be laid off by the authority

President Donald Trump (may have) met with U.S. tech workers on Monday before
signing an executive order adding increased scrutiny to federal government contracts
hiring foreign workers.

Among other things, the executive order requires each agency to review contracts
from fiscal years 2018 and 2019 to determine whether opportunities for U.S. workers
were affected by the hiring of foreign workers.

On April 22, Trump issued a 60-day order suspending the issuance of green cards for people currently outside the U.S.

Two months later, the White House issued a new mandate extending the green card suspensions and barring people outside the U.S. from obtaining certain classes of nonimmigrant visas, including H-1B visas for workers in specialty jobs,

An analysis by the Bipartisan Policy Center determined that industries with a prevalence
of green card applications do not match up with those hardest hit by the pandemic.

Postal Service Sends Delaware Election Commissioner Mail-In Election Guidance

August 17, 2020

July 29, 2020

Honorable Anthony Albence
State Election Commissioner
905 S. Governors Avenue
Dover, DE 19904-4112

Dear Commissioner Albence: Re:

Deadlines for Mailing Ballots

Under our reading of your state’s election laws, as in effect on July 27, 2020,
certain state-law requirements and deadlines appear to be incompatible with
the Postal Service’s delivery standards and the recommended timeframe noted
above. As a result, to the extent that the mail is used to transmit ballots to and
from voters, there is a significant risk that, at least in certain circumstances
ballots may be requested in a manner that is consistent with your election
rules and returned promptly, and yet not be returned in time to be counted.

(...)

To be clear, the Postal Service is not purporting to definitively interpret the
requirements of your state’s election laws, and also is not recommending that
such laws be changed to accommodate the Postal Service’s delivery standards.
By the same token, however, the Postal Service cannot adjust its delivery standards
to accommodate the requirements of state election law. For this reason, the Postal
Service asks that election officials keep the Postal Service’s delivery standards and
recommendations in mind when making decisions as to the appropriate means used
to send a piece of Election Mail to voters, and when informing voters how to successfully
participate in an election where they choose to use the mail. It is particularly important
that voters be made aware of the transit times for mail (including mail-in ballots) so
that they can make informed decisions about whether and when to (1) request a
mail-in ballot, and (2) mail a completed ballot back to election officials.

(...)

Please reach out to your assigned election mail coordinator to discuss the logistics
of your mailings and the services that are available as well as any questions you
may have. A list of election mail coordinators may be found on our website at:

USPS (addy for pdf)

Sincerely,

THOMAS J. MARSHALL

On 15th Anniversary Of Katrina, Lower 9th Ward Resident Calls On
New Orleans Diaspora To Come Home

August 28, 2020

In 2018, there were 391,000 people living in the city of New Orleans, about 80%
of its pre-storm population. But the racial makeup of the Crescent City has changed
significantly. According to U.S. Census estimates from 2019, there are nearly 93,000
fewer Black New Orleanians living in Orleans Parish compared to before the storm.
In comparison, there are about 8,000 fewer white people.

Green says he wants the New Orleans diaspora to “realize there is something more
here than at the time Katrina hit … they can come back … and they can have a good
life as well.”

The call to come home, Green says, isn’t just limited to the ones who left.

“We need other families to help us replenish our community,” he says
of the Lower 9th Ward, still his home through it all.
