18...Julie smiled to herself as she stretched in her king sized bed which was miles too big, but she didn't care. Today was her birthday! And while normally she didn't get overly excited, today would be different, she told herself. Today, her father would let her venture out and have fun. He couldn't deny her this year...she was after all, an adult!
Rolling, she scooted to the edge of the bed and carefully slipped her feet into the slippers that sat precisely where they always did. Everything had it's place in her room and everyone knew this. The maids, her tutors, her parents...and her privileged life made it easier for her in many ways to have things done, her way. Not because she wanted it that way because she needed it to be so.
As Julie moved easily through her room, she went through her morning routine, but unlike everyone else in her life, Julie did so in darkness. Her pretty unseeing eyes were useless and so she dependent on all her other senses and self training.
A hot shower cleared the last remnants of sleep from her mind and she hummed softly to herself as she toweled herself dry. The humming became a little louder as she maneuvered through her room to her closet and reached in, fingering the braille tags that hung from each hanger until she found what she wanted. A new summer dress in a pretty pale blue that hugged her slender torso and full breasts and then flared out gently around her hips. The hem fell just about her knees, gently swaying when she walked. With matching heeled sandals, she felt all grown up.
The color off set her pale skin perfectly and long mahogany hair which fell in thick lush waves down her back. Now perched on the soft seat of her vanity, Julie applied the finishing touches with makeup, carefully doing so as her maids had shown her. It still amazed them all that she was able to do such a task without sight, which made her proud to be able to do things that ‘normal girls’ would do.
Feeling anxious to get out and about this morning, Julie stood and turned a little too sharply, sending a vase of freshly cut flowers crashing to the floor. The moment the crystal hit the floor, it shattered noisily, making Julie gasp, freezing up so that she didn't slip or worse, cut herself on a jagged piece.
Sitting back down slowly, she slipped a finger under the vanity and hit a small call button, her mood slightly dampened by her over anxious action that landed her in the wet, dangerous mess. Only moments later, a knock at her door sounded and a familiar voice called through it.
"Come in! Please...I made a bit of a mess..." She called out, feeling stupid. The door swung open and she smiled, clasping her hands together. "Sorry, I know Marie is going to fuss over the mess. I was in a hurry and I knocked over a vase..."
