You're right, of course. It's one of my peeves as well. Lazy_lay might have been skimping on the motivation. Not the first author to skimp a little on the motivation to get to the "good part."

Maybe something more robust:

A big investment bank just before the Great Recession. Bunch of young male wannabee one-percenters with hot wives/girlfriends try to get rich quick by making unauthorized trades with clients' money. Really stupid stuff, synthetic CDO's on margin, interest rate swaps, Greek bond futures, etc. Get in deeper and deeper as market crashes and they have to use FDIC bank funds to meet margin calls to keep it covered up. Finally the House of Cards collapses and they get found out.

Fraud, embezzlement, grand larceny, various federal, state and local charges. If you're a Big Boss Man one-percenter you can maybe get away with that stuff. If you're a freshly-minted MBA with lots of student loan debt, not so much. Looking at big legal fees you can't afford, 10-20 if you plea out.

Big Boss Man willing to cut deal. Statute of limitations runs for seven years. Do wives/girlfriends love their guys and their lifestyles enough to be really nice to Big Boss Man and his perverted friends?

Or not.

Husbands and boyfriends go to prison and never work again in finance, wives and girlfriends on their own, have to sell the condo and the Beemer.

Still not completely clear which is worse. It's at least plausible, and I know of one case in '08 when a young couple took the "easy way" out.

Maybe some of the women on the forum will weigh in. Would you love your guy enough to do it?

I don't think that's plausible, that they'd want to be blackmailed.

part of the lesson to be learned, if any, from blackmail scenarios is that the cure - going along - actually is usually worse than refusing.

How about this? The four girls are on scholarships, if they get criminal charges they lose them.

In any case, I like the idea of "four girls jointly blackmailed"....four is definitely better than one or two, that's why the manager picked these four who always came in as a group together

...another twist is that they were blackmailed for something they didn't even do, but the store manager being truly evil, monkeyed with the video cams such that the cams provided evidence. the alarms rang when they walked out, and something was 'found in the purse' after being planted there.

I would start it off slowly. Maybe the manager as mentioned above is tired of all the red tape of court and such, and he tells the girls they can work off the money by live modeling his clothes for him. Maybe he supplies them each with a dress they have to wear out on the weekend on the condition they hand out the store's business card to anybody who inquires about their clothes.

Maybe first it starts out with office attire or school casual. The girls become hooked on "free" clothes each week and then the clothing moves towards more sexier clubwear...
