Blackjack.

Always sit at the third base seat. Trust your guts. If you think he's going to deal a 10 and it would hurt him, pass and let him get it.

And never ever be afraid to pick up your chips and walk away to another table. Never sit there with a bad vibe about the dealer.

Thanks. I'm a believer in vibes.
As opposed to the Bible or most weather forecasts ;)

At third base, you only have to "get" one card. The dealer draws next, as there is no one between you. It's more like playing alone, or against the computer.

If you are winning (really winning) and they change dealers at your table, pick up and go home.

Tipping the dealer is ok, but won't help you win. If your dealer tells you a bet is stupid - listen; they are generally allowed to help you lose slower.

Thanks, interesting.
Somehow I doubt my "winnings" will ever trigger a dealer change. Do you mean like they change dealers to break your concentration?

They change dealers anyway, to break up streaks and because they are standing on concrete.

And they call it a river boat.

They fucking pump water around it, not from the river, but from a fucking well...

And then they say the money is going to education, but it is not additional, it is in replacement, so they can use the education dollars to do really important things like buy votes.

They change dealers because sometimes a dealer might be helping you along slightly more than the pit boss likes.

It is difficult for a dealer cheat with 8 decks dealt from a shoe, but they didn't build 20 acre buildings by losing to cheats either.

Just read and practice the basic strategy charts and play them as well as you can.

You'll lose only $5 of every $1000 bet if you play well.

Easy BlackJack:

If you have less than 9 - HIT.
If you have 10 or 11 - Double (unless Dealer has 11 - then hit)
If you have 12-16 - Stand if Dealer has a 2-6, hit otherwise
If you have 17 or more - Stand.

This isn't as good as learning the entire basic strategy - but will limit your losses and let you have fun.

(split Aces and eights)

As others have said, learn basic strategy. Google a basic strategy chart and memorize it.

Better yet, though ... forget about BJ and instead learn Texas Holdem. Way more fun and if you know what you are doing, WAY better odds that you can consistently make money. Once you learn poker you will wonder why you ever wasted your time with house edge casino games.

Not a popular move, but a correct one ... Hit soft 18 versus a dealer Ten value up card.

I must again stress, though, leave BJs for the bedroom. Learn and play poker instead!

Holy Hell! A full house!

...oh wait, that's poker. Never mind.

Anyway, what the others are saying is right Fair: read up on the basics.

Usually, the tables will have a sign/placard next to them spelling out the basic rules of the table. Read these, too. They could say, 'The house hits up to 16, stands at 17', or words to that effect. It's usually printed on the table felt as well. The numbers vary from place to place, so read carefully.

Don't go hog wild. Start low and easy at first. If the vibe is wrong, leave the table and try another one.

I've done 'so-so' at the Blackjack tables; I prefer poker myself.

Good luck.
