Bitching about Boston

After last night's light show from extensive lightning, a few people might be interested in learning about how to stay safe.

June 21, 2015

Today is not only the first official day of summer, but it's also the start of Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Most people give the ol' "Pishaw... Safety... Whatever" reaction to this type of story.

However, I really believe this is an important message for all of us. My lightning story will air tomorrow on 7News, and you'll be rendered speechless by some of this video. (Monday, June 22, 2015)

Did you know that lightning can travel an average of 10-15 miles from the thunderstorm? That means if you can HEAR the thunder, you are IN DANGER even if there's blue sky above you!

It's called a "bolt out of the blue." Just remember, "When thunder roars, go indoors." There is no safe place to be outside in a thunderstorm. Keep your ears and eyes open and stay safe as we "weather" these summertime storms.

Tornado Alley East is on alert

Iffy conditions

Western and Southern MA might be in for hail, strong winds, powerful lightning
and maybe some town will see a tornado.

I am still not used to these frequent tornado warnings, for MA

There is the potential for an outbreak of severe storms," the weather service said, "Including severe thunderstorms that may bring damaging winds (up to 70 mph), golf ball size hail, heavy rain and a risk of isolated tornadoes."
I

"If cloud cover remains throughout the morning and into early afternoon, the air is likely to remain more stable and the risk of storm severity will be decreased," the weather service said. "If cloud cover clears by midday to early afternoon, the air will become more unstable and the risk of storm severity will be greatly increased."

The National Weather Service has declared the week of June 21st through 27th, lightning safety awareness week

Cold front has moved out of New York and into New England
Clearing skies are bad news, as it will trigger a second round
this afternoon.

Some rotation of storm clouds expected.
"We are not out of the woods, yet."

Boston version of lightning awareness clip

Today's fact is lightning strikes are more frequent in summer
Today's warning is to exit the water, when you hear thunder.

"You do not have all day, or all the time in the world."

Move! Now! Seek shelter.

Monday's episode

Video clips of powerful lightning strikes.
Examples of people who have been hit or killed by strikes.

Fact
A lightning strike can happen on a sunny day, in a clear blue sky.
A storm that is fifteen miles away, can be the source.

Warning
If you can hear thunder, you are in danger.
Seek shelter.

Why you should pay attention to the sound of thunder.

Lightning is concentrated at the forefront of a storm.
You are at a greater risk of being hit by lightning at the beginning of a storm.

Go indoors.
Get inside your car, if that is all that is available.

Do not shelter near a telephone pole with a transfomer, if possible.
Do not shelter next to a tall tree.

If you seek protection under a tree, which is one of the worst places to be during a storm, the lightning can hit the tree then jump to you, a better conductor of electricity since humans are mostly salty water.

Turn off devices.

The lightning strike will jump from it, to you.

If you are outside, talking into your cell phone, or texting is a really bad idea, after you hear thunder.

I would hesitate to shower or take a bath, after thunder.
A friend got shocked, and her heart went wonky.

Yes, Niagara brand bottled water does have an e coli problem.

The company said E. coli bacteria was found in the water supply on June 10, but that there has been no E. coli contamination detected in its finished products or in the spring water delivered to its bottling facility. It has not received any complaints of injury or illness.

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2015...recalled-after-tests-detect-e-coli-at-source/

No, the water is not from Niagara.

The bottling facilities where the recalled spring water products were produced are in Hamburg and Allentown, PA, and the production occurred between 3 a.m. EDT on June 10 to 8 p.m. EDT on June 18, 2015, Niagara stated.

The bottled water has Niagara Bottling LLC on the label and is sold under the following brand names: Acadia, Acme, Big Y, Best Yet, 7-Eleven, Niagara, Nature’s Place, Pricerite, Superchill, Morning Fresh, Shaws, ShopRite, Western Beef Blue, and Wegmans.

Stores recalling the bottled water products include Wegmans, ShopRite, 7-Eleven, Acme and others.

http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2015/...ater-brands-from-same-source-for-e-coli-risk/

According to a notice posted June 19 by Niagara, the recalled water should be boiled for one minute and cooled before being used. “Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water,” the notice stated. Consumers may also return the recalled product for a full refund, the company stated.

Have a fun time, tracking which water source was used at the bottling plant!

"Seventies influences from Saturday night fever to hippy deluxe, a khaki nod to military style alongside nautical accents, experiments with transparency, patchworks of vintage prints and a mix & match approach to volume and fabric, for Summer 2015 we're set to see contrast take center stage. If you only have one takeaway from the Spring/Summer collections, make it a move towards singularity, with a modern energy founded on those twists and borrowings that fashion so loves. Stay a step ahead as we present a round-up of the runway trends set to take Spring/Summer 2015 by storm."

Where has this collumnist been for the last 20 years ?

Every summer, these items are in the store windows, and on the racks and shelves.

Shift of storm alerts to Berkshires and Western MA

Southern MA storm watch until one o'clock in the morning.

Summer had ended, early, that year...

1991

In Massachusetts, where damage was heaviest, over 100 homes were destroyed or severely damaged. To the north, more than 100 homes were affected in Maine, including the vacation home of then-President George H. W. Bush. More than 38,000 people were left without power, and along the coast high waves inundated roads and buildings. In portions of New England, damage was worse than that caused by Hurricane Bob, two months earlier.

Aside from tidal flooding along rivers, the storm's effects were primarily concentrated along the coast. A buoy off the coast of Nova Scotia reported a wave height of 100.7 feet (30.7 m), the highest ever recorded in the province's offshore waters. In the middle of the storm, the Andrea Gail sank, killing its crew of six.

New England is just a pot of unpopped corn kernels, today.
For that, I am grateful.

I do not want to see a wall cloud or a shelf cloud, here.

What in the Dickens, is a hook feature, hook echo?

Storm warnings extended to midnight.

The weatherman feels as if he is being taunted.
The conditions are what you get a tornado genesis from.
Even though it is eminent, it does not touch the ground and rip.
South Eastern MA got something violent.
Taunton MA had a rotating wall cloud.

June 1, 2011 EF Three

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Monday marks four years since a deadly tornado touched down in western Massachusetts, causing widespread destruction from Westfield to Charlton.
Some of the worst devastation was in the eastern Hampden County town of Brimfield, as well as Springfield, where the EF-3 tornado cut a path more than six miles long.

The National Weather Service weather forecast office in Boston noted in a forecast discussion earlier this week that, "Overall this is an atypical pattern for the beginning of summer. Looks just awful. Overall unseasonable with onshore east/northeast winds. Periods of wet weather at times."

http://www.wunderground.com/news/fa...pattern-change-end-june-heat-relief-southeast

Cold, soggy, and dank. I will take this. It is familiar. Please keep the tornado weather away.

I knew it would never be the same, after the trees started to snap off at the top.

Prize for tolerating Sunday's down pours ?

Rip currents where you would expect them.

Remember what to do, before you approach the ocean.

Rip currents are not for noobies.

Just say no.

There was confirmation of a tornado, when the whole state had a threat warning up.
Just enough to see trees splayed in all directions.

It was a Category zero.

It could have been another Springfield disaster area. Luckily, nothing like that happened.

80 days until the Big E fair.

Hopefully a tornado will not visit the fair.

Once in a life time, has changed to once a month.
Now, tell me that something has not changed.

Bounced awake. This morning's thunder was the loudest that I have ever heard in my life.

This is the hardest that the house has shook, ever.

Weekly tornado warning, ended this morning.

What the fuck is a tornado doing, forming near the ocean ?

I feel sorry for the areas inside Tornado Alley East. A thousand lightning strikes, makes no sense.

Poor Nantucket got another four hundred.

More punishing severe weather for the commuters trying to go home.
Our new mayor did not bother to get on the horn and warn people about this morning's commute.

Hail has graduated to a rare occurrence, to a weekly threat.
The strange shear winds at Logan, have mutated.
Years ago, we saw straight line winds invade Western, Ma.
Now, we have real tornado wreckage.

Hail is a fact of life. We may as well take advice from people who have experience with it.

"Over the past couple of decades, meteorologists have made it a point to tell people not to hide under an overpass during a tornado. In some ways, overpasses are a worse place to be when a tornado strikes than out in the open. Like putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose to make the water spray faster, tornadic winds can press under an overpass and speed up, increasing the chances that anyone taking cover will be pelted by flying debris or sucked out and thrown to their demise."

Parking under an overpass during a hailstorm is a wonderfully jerkface move. It’s like evacuating an airplane and freezing up in the emergency exit—you’re almost safe yourself, but you’re royally screwing all the people stuck in the disaster behind you.

Blocking traffic while parking under a bridge can and does cause traffic jams that trap hundreds of people on the road during a severe thunderstorm. If something happens down the road that requires first responders, they themselves can get stuck in the traffic, unable to help people who need it the most.

If the rain and hail are coming down hard enough to reduce visibility, people coming up on the traffic jam (or parked cars) may not realize they’re standing still in time to brake, causing a chain reaction pileup accident.

(Hiding under the overpass in Massachusetts, might cause someone to drown.
Our drainage is not the best. It is normal for New England to be soggy. Police are called to rescue people from floating cars in flooded roads.)

Newburyport, get to someplace safe. Rotation seen, tornado possible. Now!
Northern end of Rowley.

Wait all year, for good beach weather. Sorry, weather patterns have changed.
Getting hit by lightning, or getting hit by a tornado, is a possibility.

A little NH town has been chosen as a target of bothersome weather. At least, there will be no tornado.
(Hopefully)

Keep the fireworks dry!

Woman brushing her teeth at the sink gets a scare

New Hampshire woman is recovering after she was burned in a lightning strike near her home Wednesday.

Fallen tree leaning on a transformer.

Maybe, it transmitted electricity through the rebar in the basement floor ?

There is a circuit breaker box in the bathroom.

"...the lighting was preceded by a large explosion."

"It was like a bomb," he said. "It was really, really loud. Louder than any firework I've ever heard."

"It burned her hair and struck her foot," he said. "She's got a little burn on her foot, and it singed her hair."

The lightning also knocked out power to the neighborhood.

"She had some numbness down her arm and her leg, and that's why they took her to the hospital to check her out," he said.

He said nothing in his house was damaged, but when he went outside, he discovered evidence of the force of the strike.

"It blew that rock right over here across the road," he said. "That's a good 20, 30 feet across the road."
