After last night's light show from extensive lightning, a few people might be interested in learning about how to stay safe.

June 21, 2015


Today is not only the first official day of summer, but it's also the start of Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Most people give the ol' "Pishaw... Safety... Whatever" reaction to this type of story.

However, I really believe this is an important message for all of us. My lightning story will air tomorrow on 7News, and you'll be rendered speechless by some of this video. (Monday, June 22, 2015)

Did you know that lightning can travel an average of 10-15 miles from the thunderstorm? That means if you can HEAR the thunder, you are IN DANGER even if there's blue sky above you!

It's called a "bolt out of the blue." Just remember, "When thunder roars, go indoors." There is no safe place to be outside in a thunderstorm. Keep your ears and eyes open and stay safe as we "weather" these summertime storms.

A lightning strike can happen on a sunny day, in a clear blue sky.
A storm that is fifteen miles away, can be the source.

Warning
If you can hear thunder, you are in danger.
Seek shelter.

Why you should pay attention to the sound of thunder.

Lightning is concentrated at the forefront of a storm.
You are at a greater risk of being hit by lightning at the beginning of a storm.


Go indoors.
Get inside your car, if that is all that is available.

Do not shelter near a telephone pole with a transfomer, if possible.
Do not shelter next to a tall tree.

If you seek protection under a tree, which is one of the worst places to be during a storm, the lightning can hit the tree then jump to you, a better conductor of electricity since humans are mostly salty water.

Turn off devices.

The lightning strike will jump from it, to you.

If you are outside, talking into your cell phone, or texting is a really bad idea, after you hear thunder.

I would hesitate to shower or take a bath, after thunder.
A friend got shocked, and her heart went wonky.

Yes, Niagara brand bottled water does have an e coli problem.

The company said E. coli bacteria was found in the water supply on June 10, but that there has been no E. coli contamination detected in its finished products or in the spring water delivered to its bottling facility. It has not received any complaints of injury or illness.

No, the water is not from Niagara.

The bottling facilities where the recalled spring water products were produced are in Hamburg and Allentown, PA, and the production occurred between 3 a.m. EDT on June 10 to 8 p.m. EDT on June 18, 2015, Niagara stated.


The bottled water has Niagara Bottling LLC on the label and is sold under the following brand names: Acadia, Acme, Big Y, Best Yet, 7-Eleven, Niagara, Nature’s Place, Pricerite, Superchill, Morning Fresh, Shaws, ShopRite, Western Beef Blue, and Wegmans.

Stores recalling the bottled water products include Wegmans, ShopRite, 7-Eleven, Acme and others.

The National Weather Service weather forecast office in Boston noted in a forecast discussion earlier this week that, "Overall this is an atypical pattern for the beginning of summer. Looks just awful. Overall unseasonable with onshore east/northeast winds. Periods of wet weather at times."

Hail has graduated to a rare occurrence, to a weekly threat.
The strange shear winds at Logan, have mutated.
Years ago, we saw straight line winds invade Western, Ma.
Now, we have real tornado wreckage.


Hail is a fact of life. We may as well take advice from people who have experience with it.


"Over the past couple of decades, meteorologists have made it a point to tell people not to hide under an overpass during a tornado. In some ways, overpasses are a worse place to be when a tornado strikes than out in the open. Like putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose to make the water spray faster, tornadic winds can press under an overpass and speed up, increasing the chances that anyone taking cover will be pelted by flying debris or sucked out and thrown to their demise."


Parking under an overpass during a hailstorm is a wonderfully jerkface move. It’s like evacuating an airplane and freezing up in the emergency exit—you’re almost safe yourself, but you’re royally screwing all the people stuck in the disaster behind you.

Blocking traffic while parking under a bridge can and does cause traffic jams that trap hundreds of people on the road during a severe thunderstorm. If something happens down the road that requires first responders, they themselves can get stuck in the traffic, unable to help people who need it the most.

If the rain and hail are coming down hard enough to reduce visibility, people coming up on the traffic jam (or parked cars) may not realize they’re standing still in time to brake, causing a chain reaction pileup accident.

Woman brushing her teeth at the sink gets a scare

New Hampshire woman is recovering after she was burned in a lightning strike near her home Wednesday.

Maybe, it transmitted electricity through the rebar in the basement floor ?

There is a circuit breaker box in the bathroom.

"...the lighting was preceded by a large explosion."

"It was like a bomb," he said. "It was really, really loud. Louder than any firework I've ever heard."

"It burned her hair and struck her foot," he said. "She's got a little burn on her foot, and it singed her hair."

The lightning also knocked out power to the neighborhood.

"She had some numbness down her arm and her leg, and that's why they took her to the hospital to check her out," he said.

He said nothing in his house was damaged, but when he went outside, he discovered evidence of the force of the strike.

"It blew that rock right over here across the road," he said. "That's a good 20, 30 feet across the road."
