Worth repeating.

Could someone please help me down from this soapbox.

I'm offerring you my hand to help you down, but I like what you said, so I don't mind if you stay up there a bit.

After my boyfriend and I got engaged, I overheard an acquaintance ask another friend one day if my fiance knew I was a lesbian. I guess her idea was that I had to be either straight or a lesbian.

Not uncommon at all unfortunately. I noticed that the headline on Sheryl Swoopes yesterday was something like "confesses homosexuality." However, in the article Swoopes had several comments on the order of "I was just tired of hiding who I am in love with," and "the break-up of my marriage had nothing to do with my sexuality," and finally "I don't think I was born homosexual." The point is that for Swoopes her love is a complicated and unique thing. She is in love with someone and doesn't want to hide it. For the author of the headline - those amazing anonymous AP editors - it was some confession of a single true hidden identity/label.
