If it was child porn the site may have been a sting operation, in which case they'd have the IP address of her cable modem, not the router, but the wifi router is what someone would hack. Or just use if she left it open.

A simple warrant would have been enough to get the name and address of the modem owner from the ISP.

In such cases people are frequently considered guilty until proven innocent.

I know someone in the UK this happened to. It destroyed their life and marriage, kept them from seeing their children for a year or so. Police gave no 'evidence' other than claiming they had 'a reliable source', anonymous of course, it could only have been the ISP.

The victim was also blamed for subsequent occurrences at the same IP address even after they had been forced to live elsewhere. After several months the police had to acknowledge they had no evidence and the cases were dropped. The victim is still struggling to rebuild what is left of their life, they'll never be the same again, unsurprisingly.

There is no Justice, there is only the law.

Doesn't even have to be a sting operation, ISPs have software that automatically scan for identifying features of this kind of material.
