Biden Exit / Remain Watch Thread

i suppose it's possible he'll step down if covid takes its toll and he feels no longer able to do what's required

i am also sure there are people jumping up and down hoping this will make him step down... people who not only want younger candidates but are not keen on Harris; they might prefer to see themselves in her place.

given the time span, the whole funding complications which will make a shit-show of proper, effective campaigning by a different candidate, and the chaos amongst dems even trying to choose a candidate with better chances of beating trump, this couldn't have come at a worse time.

Biden’s COVID symptoms are mild. He’s on Paxlovid. This is a temporary interruption of his campaign but he’s not going to step down.

Let me be clear - the only reason I want him to step aside is because I don't believe he can win and I believe him stepping aside and endorsing Harris will give Harris a boost over current polling.

I think Harris can win and I think she will get more votes regardless. I want Democrats to have the best chance to win. I also think that anyone who believes Trump is a threat to democracy would be dumb not to recognize this.

If he steps down, it won’t be because of mild sniffles caused by Covid. It will be because of political pressure and/or a realization he can’t win. He’s got the delegates and if he remains firm for the next month, he’ll be delivering his acceptance speech in Chicago and will almost certainly be on the November ballot.

Obama tells allies Biden needs to seriously consider his viability

Former president Barack Obama has told allies in recent days that President Biden’s path to victory has greatly diminished and he thinks the president needs to seriously consider the viability of his candidacy, according to multiple people briefed on his thinking.

Obama has only spoken with Biden once since the debate, and he has been clear in his conversations with others that the future of Biden’s candidacy is a decision for the president to make. He has emphasized that his concern is protecting Biden and his legacy, and has pushed back against the idea that he alone can influence Biden’s decision-making process.
Behind the scenes, Obama has been deeply engaged in conversations about the future of Biden’s campaign, taking calls from many anxious Democrats, including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and has shared his views about the president’s challenges, according to people with knowledge of the calls, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

A spokesperson for Obama declined to comment.

if it's coming, i just hope (i don't do prayer) the other dems can get their ducks in a row damned sharpish without all the infighting

This is stupid. Joe should have a clear 20-30 point advantage in polls. There is no valid reason not to support him.

Many voters think both candidates are too old. Many of those same voters visibly see Biden acting too old.

They don't use the same logic as many of us do in our choice.

If you hold having a Republican administration over all, you might do. His base is a rabid cult, of course, but many Republicans will vote Republicans regardless to hold the administration. Many Democrats vote that way too. I do unless there's a compelling reason not to.

'We're close to the end': Biden world braces for the possibility that the president steps aside

“We’re close to the end,” a person close to Biden said.

That person, who previously doubted Biden would ever step aside, acknowledged that it’s still the president’s decision but joined in the array of Biden allies who say he is nearing a point of no return.

A person who spoke with a senior campaign official said a sense of a new reality has fallen over the campaign.

“They’re finally realizing: It’s a when, not if,” the person said.
