Meanwhile, downtown:
The Crime Lab Technician was engrossed in studying a set of fingerprints on the screen before her when she nearly jumped out of her skin at movement out of the corner of her eye. She spun to find a man just standing there, staring at her. With obvious fear she asked, "Who the hell are you...? How'd you get in here?"
"You're doing the report on the gun found at the park today, yes?" he asked calmly, adding, "Reo Kahn's weapon."
"Who are you?" she asked, looking around the otherwise empty room. "You can't be in here."
The man stared hard and cold into the technician's eyes for a moment, repeating, "You're doing the report on the gun found at the park today, yes?"
"Yes," the technician said simply.
The man set a sealed evidence bag atop the counter. "This is the clip that came out of the Uzi."
The technician looked confused for a moment, reached for an evidence bag of her own, and moved it into the stranger's view. "No. This is the magazine that came out of the weapon they collected--"
She went quiet at the man reached into his jacket, revealing the handgun on his belt. He removed a manilla envelope from the inside breast pocket, dropping it onto the counter. The contents popped out of the unsealed package just enough to reveal themselves to be bank packs of $100 bills. He looked to the bag he'd presented and repeated, "This is the magazine that came out of the weapon today."
The technician didn't immediately understand what the man was implying. She looked at the money again, then it dawned on her. She asked tentatively, glancing at the legitimate clip, "Am I allowed to ask why that clip is the right clip?"
When the man only stared at her, the technician looked to her clip and asked, "And … what about this one?"
After the man pushed the envelope of cash closer and offered out his hand, the technician gave over the clip that had been delivered to her earlier in the day. The man turned and headed away. Behind him, the technician picked up the cash and gave it a cursory examination to see how much it was.
She called out just as the man was disappearing into the elevator, "Nice doing business with you."
