Beta fish help

He is pretty cool.. if this thing proves to be easy to care for.. I might have to buy one.

I have an old 5 gal tank hanging around the house someplace.. I might filter it and get me a fishy for my desk. :D

Don't get a big tank for a beta. They like smaller. Mine is in a vase, with a little decorative gravel.

No filter...to noisy for them. They also like to make bubbles, and you may notice a bunch near the waterline. This is GOOD. means he is happy.

OK.. everything I've read says the vase thing.. and tanks smaller than 5 gallons aren't good for betas.

That people are led to believe they like it.. when in reality they don't.

I'm even more confused.

This is from the message board that RNAB posted....

"7. A Decent Sized Tank - Yes, we are told at pet shops that bettas like to be in small amounts of water. Yes, they sell them in little cups and some people who keep their bettas in champagne glasses swear their pets have lived for years. RUBBISH! A betta, like any other fish, needs TO SWIM, and therefore needs a tank that can provide it with enough space to carry on with betta activities. We recommend at least a five gallon tank. It is true that breeders keep their bettas in smaller tanks (often one gallon but no less), but remember that breeders are professional fishkeepers who usually have years of experience behind them. They also change water and remove uneaten food and wastes on a daily basis. Finally, water quality, temperature, and diseases are much more easy to control in a larger volume of water. Anyone who has seen a betta spread his fins after being confined to a cup will never want to see him in small quarters again.

I have raised them and the water needs to be a little warmer than room temp, about 80, I think. Make sure if you clean the water to use veryh neutral water and let it be the same temp as formerly residing in. The don't use soaps, just rinse and clean as best you can, rinse the rocks if any to get rid of the food and fecal material.

She doesn't have any rocks..

Why am I thinking she doesn't know what she is doing with this damn thing?

She must not care that it's a living thing.. UGH!

No marbles or anything on the bottom?

Betas like everything else like a natural environment. If It has a long tail and is richly colored, it is a male, the females are very color neutral for the most part.

Marbles Are Pretty, But

Annoying As Hell To Clean Around!

The 5 Gal Is A Huge Environment For A Betta, I Like To See Them In A Groovy 5 Gal Community Tank, But Love Ta See Them All By Themselves In A 2.5 Gal!

If You Think He Needs A Friend, Then Get Him A Snail:D Watch Out For The Snails Eating Yer Plant Life Though! LOL

I Like Ta Keep My Bettas In A 2.5 With Large Rocks, No Gravel Or Substrate And A Couple Of Neato Plants. As Far As Filtration Goes I Use A Fluval Plus 1 Underwater Filter, It Does A Good Job:D

La La La!
This Is A Porn Board Not A Fishie Forum!!!! LOL

Allriiighty then, all good info above, but I have a couple of cents worth. My Stepfather was an aquarium supply professional.
The Chinese/ Siamese fighting fish (Beta) was his favorite species.
Clearly, a vase or champagne glass is DEFINITELY NOT enough room for a fish that loves to swim, however a single Beta does not need more than the space it would get from a 2.5 gallon tank, especially if it is a male.
The male of the species is very colorful and bright, and loves to show his colors, if you want to impress your future MiL, get him a small tank or bowl, no bigger than the 2.5 gal to ~ 3L in size.
To be nice for the fish, at least one side of the tank should be flat so that you can place a mirror against it, if you want to see the Male Beta in full splendor. You must be careful however that once he finds the mirror that you leave it there for only a few minutes.
What you will see is spectacular, the fish will flare out it's fins and become a bit aggresive, thinking that another male is infringing on his territory(this is not cruel, just like people animals need to release their agressive tendencies too, and it is good exercise for the fish) a few minutes only a couple times a week max. Share this with MiL, NEVER EVER place another male beta in a tank with a male Beta, they are VERRRRY territorial and defensive.
Also weighted plastic plants or one of those little castles is cool to put with a Beta, they need privacy too.

HOpe it helps.

edited to once again correct my horendous spelling.

I cleaned the vase late last night.. and he made it through the night. I must have done something right.

He is eating good.. And he loves the computer monitor. Especially if I have the fish tank screen saver on. LOL It is so funny to watch him flair up and look tough towards computer generated fish.
