I’ve only ever used plugs and one other toy on my ass but I usually look for lube with some lidocaine in it to help ease the pain of first stretching out.

...Typically a silicone lube, you don't want to use water based lube in the anal canal because it is quickly absorbed by the tissue and stops lubricating. You do NOT want to use ANYTHING with lidocaine or other pain killer, that's how you get hurt.

Albolene is an excellent and long lasting lube but, as a mineral oil/petrolatum based product, it's not compatible with most condoms and many sex toys.
Long story, but the first gay porn I ever saw, which was in a box of magazines I found in my youth , featured several guys having anal sex and using Albolene as lube. So, when looking for an impromptu lube in Yosemite National Park in the late 70's, in preparation for what was to be the first full on anal sex with my gay lover, I stumbled upon Albolene in a store and knew it was what I wanted. I'm not a spring chicken, and I've tried a lot of lubes over a lot of years, so my "What's the best lube...." answers have been a constantly evolving process.
My current preferences which, form following function, are based on what kind of "anal" you're talking about are thus:
For heavy duty MESSY ass play, with BIG toys and even an occasional fist, my favorite is J-lube (it comes as a powder). It's slick without peer and can be mixed with water to any desired consistency. Mixed thick it provides that extra "cushion" to ease the way for extreme ass play. Mixed thinner, great for any flavor of sex. If it starts to dry out a little water (or spit) makes it slick again.
The biggest drawbacks to J-lube are that it's stringy, and messy, dangerously slick if you use it in the shower (especially if you use the powder in the shower), and that a prepared batch lasts only about 3 days before it should be thrown out ( a major ingredient is sucrose) though some formulas can be mixed to last longer.
For regular ass fucking, or less extreme anal play (smaller toys...LOL), I've been using Probe Personal Lubricant, Thick and Rich formula, for the last couple of years (ever since I found it). It's darn near as slick as J-lube, safe with any condom or toy material, keeps indefinitely, and is a lot easier to clean up. Again, drying out is not really an issue since a squirt more lube or a little water, spit or other "fluid" will reactivate it.
Finally, in those instances when I really may want some "lasting power" to the lubricant, or I want to lubed in advance for something more "spontaneous", I'll cautiously go with the old tried and true Astroglide-X silicon lube bearing in mind that it can be reactive with condoms and silicon toys.

As I previously said, through constant play and experimentation, my preferences are a constantly evolving process.
My NEW favorite for this type of heavy duty ass play is K-Lube (powder). It comes as a powder, like J-Lube, but is more easily mixed and unlike J-Lube it "contains special preservatives so that the finished product stays as fresh as the day you make it." I can attest to that as mixed J-Lube generally starts to become cloudy after three or four days and I've had K-Lube remain clear for...well till I use it up. Also, K-Lube cleans up easier.

I usually keep two mixed bottles on hand, one with the recommended mix of 2 teaspoons (that's teaspoons...not tablespoons) which turns out quite thick and one quite a bit thinner. I haven't used another water based lube since I discovered K-Lube.
