...my latest story, I just want to check a fact with you yanks: would someone who goes to the prom in their senior high school's last year be 18?

They would be very close to eighteen, with about half over and half under or possibly a bit weighted to the over-eighteens.

Most people turn eighteen during their senior year, so a Prom late in the year -- close to graduation, as many Proms are -- would be after their eighteenth birthday.

I would add a casual mention of a recent birthday to your story to make it clear that your protagonist is in the upper half of the age spread.

It varies. If it's their senior year's prom, they normally would be either 17 or 18 depending on when in the yar their birthday fell. They might be upto a year or so younger if they were skipped a grade (or more), and could be 19 if they had failed to pass a grade.

If they're the date at someone else's prom, they might have an even wider range depending on how tolerant the school organizing and hosting the dance is of that sort of thing.

But, on average, they're going to be 17, possibly 18.
