"Because it's there."

Just in case you didn't see this.

"China has asked Nepal to keep climbers off Mount Everest this spring, a move that would prevent pro-Tibetan protests when the Olympic torch is carried to the summit of the world's highest mountain, Nepalese officials said Friday.

The organizers of the Beijing Olympics have not released an exact date for the planned ascent, but preparations point to late April or early May. Activists critical of Chinese policy in Tibet have unfurled banners at the Everest base camp in the past.

Nepalese officials said a decision should be reached soon on whether to approve Beijing's request to shut down climbing on Everest until May 10. The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said China made the request last month.

Expeditions from the Chinese side of the peak have already been banned until May 10, with authorities saying they are concerned about "heavy climbing activities and pressure on the environment."

Everest straddles the border of Chinese-controlled Tibet and Nepal, home to many Tibetan exiles and activists. May is considered the best time to climb Everest, but climbers have to be on the mountain weeks before to acclimatize to the harsh weather and high altitude.

Protests led by Buddhist monks against Chinese rule turned violent in Tibet's capital Friday, with shops and vehicles torched and gunshots echoing through the streets of the ancient city. A radio report said two people had been killed."

How crazy is that? IF they manage to carry a sputtering, oxygen-deprived fucking torch up there, who the hell do they expect to be waiting with a big "Free Tibet" sign?

Though I have to say that the temptation to mess with them on the route is powerful.

You can buy a special edition torch.......

This Olympics could be circa 1938.

I see that Nepal has agreed to close down their side of the mountain for 10 days so the Chinese can show off without a confrontation.....

Indeed, it's fucking BS.......

It's insane stupidity. They should do anything but close it down. Thy should reduce peak fees for that period to the equivalent of a dollar, so there would be a huge crowd there.

Fuck.

The words of great climber George Leigh Mallory, asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Mt Everest. perhaps the most famous quote ever on climbing, and certainly the one that gets the most play among non-climbers.

In this thread, I will attempt to answer your questions about the craft of moving on technically challenging terrain in the mountains. Rock, Ice, Snow, Altitude...what do you want to know?

I started rock climbing a little over ten years ago, actually the week of the Oklahoma City bombing, by taking four days of lessons with other litsters and great friends atmas and HungryJoe. I started ice climbing maybe a year or two later, and I've been hiking all my life; I've climbed some technical snow and some high stuff. I certainly don't know it all, but I like it, and I like to talk about it.

Ask away.

damn some one had to teach you how to climb. i have free climbed since i was in grade school. and before it was this big sport. my first fall was at 17 and was from 60'. but that was back when we did not use any thing but your witts and instinct. peole make out that climbing is so hard. it is just determination and common sence as well as patetious

You fell head first, didn't you?

Online registration available for McKinley climbs

FYI......from the AP

"DENALI NATIONAL PARK -- Online registration is now available for mountaineers attempting climbs of Mount McKinley or Mount Foraker.

Park officials say the system is a quick, safe way for climbers to register with park officials.

All climbers attempting McKinley or Foraker are required to pre-register with Denali National Park and Preserve at least 60 days in advance of the climb.

As of Monday, 738 mountaineers had registered to climb McKinley this year. Ten climbers have registered for Mount Foraker.

Park officials say they anticipate between 1,200 and 1,300 climbers this year, with most of them attempting their climbs in May and June. "

Beat the crowd, climb Foraker.

Foraker is a significantly more difficult peak, I believe.

How did I miss this? Four mile trek up and 55 degree slope to ski on?

Dunno. Most famous steep in the East. I never thought I was good enough to ski it. There are some winters when there's enough snow cover that you can ski from the summit down over the headwall and all the way to the parking lot.

Those are some earned turns, there.

So, first day actually climbing in a log while, maybe a year. We went to French's Dome on a shoulder of Mt Hood with a friend, and slogged around in the snow trying to find it. Which was absurd, since we had parked maybe a hundred yards from the fucking thing, a giant plug of lava sticking up very close to the road. So after we found it, we consulted the guidebook for an easy way to the top (there's no way to walk), and I jumped on lead on what we thought was a closely bolted 5.7 but turned out to be a not-at-all-closely-bolted 5.8, described in the guidebook as "hard." I eventually managed to downclimb and get on the right route, but my forearms were thrashed, so I left a biner in the highest bolt and we used it as a toprope anchor so Lady P and friend Uma could dance a bit also. No finishe route, no summit, no particular success, but damn, it was great to be out in the mountains again, moving on technical terrain, feeling like although I was out of shape and my climbing was shit, I was in my element. Pics when I get around to uploading them.

For every erstwhile climber who again puts hand to stone, the world becomes a better place.

Indeed. Alex Lowe used to say that the greatest climber in the world was the one who was having the most fun.

How did your clinic go?

Cancelled, again. Every time this has happened the people I work with have been loud in their disappointment...a couple have told me they've asked the manager to have me put one on regardless of any sale or promotion going on. They're just starting in climbing and are quite eager to learn.

Dude, just ask a bunch of them to go climbing on days off. Work it out so they all get to go on different days. You're the rock star in that place. Act like one. Schedule concerts, you know?
Good to read, Perg.....

Good to feel, too. My forearms have carpal asshole syndrome right now.

I knew a guy with carpal tunnel who was addressing treatment via diet. This was interesting, you might look into it.
He got the condition via being a software developer, which is the most fairy way of getting it.
