BDSM in Advertising

Is interesting the increase BDSM related themes are creeping into the advertising world. Thought it might be interesting to have a thread where we can post those we like, love, or hate.

Have to say the Martini advert on television here in Holland is cool. Beautiful woman in bikini reclining in a sunchair.......solid gold collar about an inch wide around her neck....camera moves to the waiter bringing a cool Martini to the table in front of her and as she goes to sit up straight the camera pans from collar to one wrist buckled by wide black leather cuff to one arm of the chair, then other wrist which is tied with a scarf to the other chair arm. Nice.

Mmmm, have noticed 2 more this week though not caught the whole advert.....both for hair care. First one was one of the fruit based shampoo/conditioner which had a girl finding herself the victim of some creative hair bondage....second was a Schwartkopf advert with a guy (I think from a quick glimpse) beiong left handcuffed to the bedhead. Makes watching adverts much ore interesting. And does this mean the advertising industry is taking over the computer/IT industry for known perverts?

I've noticed alot of it is hitting mainstream and not just in the music leather cuffs gothic style either ...

I think the bdsm movement will be the next gay movement, but not as large.

I know this is not advertising advertising but what the hey.

There is a classic Doom-style shooter video game called Serious Sam and as you can guess it, the SAM is ever so present in the character of the hero.

So yeah. My two cents of knowledge has been offered.

Just caught a commercial for a lady's razor. Sort of soft core - she's blindfolded and worried. He's taking big swathes of lather off of her legs.

Isn't that the commercial for depilatory? It didn't look particularly BDSM to me, and she didn't look particularly worried. Maybe there are two commercials out with similar motifs.

However, on the even lighter side -

AXE deodorant has a commercial with a male mannequin naked to the waist with a cowboy hat. A woman in cowgirl attire whips him saying giddy up, giddy up giddy up.

As in all advertsiing the important thing is getting the attention of the audience and this does the job nicely.

I don't remember if I posted about it or not, but there has been a tic-tac commercial on for a while now that the last line is something like

"I don't want to punish my tastebuds, I want to reward them"

and she says a few more things like that in the commercial. I thought it was cute.

I work in close proximity to a women's studies professor and she is baffled by such advertisements. she thinks it is against women's lib, being submissive and such. i wish i could more vocally explain to her the mental aspect of being submissive and that it isn't degredation of women.

I think that "BDSM" is going to be far, far larger than the gay movement, but not as distinct.

"BDSM" is going to be used as a catchall term to describe any kind of sexuality involving A. passion and B. power play, in other words, most of it.

Everyone is BDSM. My gentle hippie aunt and my gentle, hippie, but masculine and somewhat controlling uncle who tutor Iraqi refugees and make their own wine, married 35 happy years. The RJ Masters style Ned Flanders traditional marriage pervs down the block. The floppy indie rock sub boy and his chubby domineering girlfriend with the lower back tatoo that spilt my martini last night. All the girls next door who dream of bad boys throwing them down on the floor but still making the car payment. et c etc etc. Humanity itself is BDSM. Our sexuality is completely tied up in power differential and always has been.

Has anyone seen that book about the Newport Cigarette "Alive WIth Pleasure" ad series that ran for years in the 1990s?

Once you see the whole ad series in a row and know that it is perverse, it will blow your mind that such a thing was allowed into culture. A complete underground joke by some sick ad directors. Amazing.

I would go for it unless it is going to harm you professionally. I worked in a feminist organisation, my dream place to be as a feminist myself, and came up against such discussions about how women could not possibly enjoy such things, and that they were just too afraid to do anything to get out of the situation......hmmm, being domestic violence work had coloured most of the workers views to divide everything into abuse/nonabuse. Eventually I had enough of listening to people who really had no clue make judgements about other women so choosing my words carefully reminded them 2 of the main standpoints of feminism were to not judge other women and impose your values on them (after all wasn't it to remove male choices placed on women which contributed largely to the feminist movement....why should it be traded for women doing the same to other women?), and that feminism was about women making choices in their lives which worked for them. The discussions became more interesting after that and though some were not going to open their mind to the possibility anyone could enjoy being dominated or given pain, a few actually began to see how it was a valid choice for some.
