I think it can. There's a lurking Geek who got a different reading then I did. Not that I'd ever hint that he should post anything anywhere... But anyway, he gets more of a nostalgia feeling. I never studied this particular one either. I didnt' mean to act all brainy and edjamacated at everyone. Most poems are what we, as the reader, makes of them. I mean, I think "Hotel California" is a love song.
The reason I think it's about madness is the last two lines:
"A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh- but smile no more."
I have this vision of ghosts, screaming with laughter, but there's no humour, just wide eyed hysteria.
