I couldn't tell you what mental health is in terms of public safety. But i know prisons and the death sentence doesn't deter killings. It just makes rich people richer. And idiots feel safer.

I also know banning shit doesn't work either. Sick people will hurt and kill. They think not of consequences when they're killing. The OP can whine as much as he wants. Assault weapons such as the select fire rifles used by the military (ex. M4) are not easily accessible by people who are not in the military or law enforcement. Modern sporting rifles such as AR15s are protected under 2A and SCOTUS precedent. Some states have limits on things like magazine capacity, suppressors, type of grip, bayonets and stuff like that, but Congress will never be able to take away our right to purchase and possess semiautomatic rifles and pistols.

As for weapons, ANYTHING is an assault weapon of you want it to be. Fortunately the writers of the Constitution foresaw the sort of idiots that would emerge from under rocks and wrote in a few clauses that I bet people in the UK and Australia now wish they had.

As for change as you see it, THAT is a constitutional amendment and good luck with that one. The number of states moving to constituionally-based laws on firearms is increasing all the time. Once we have reciprocal open and concealed carry across ALL states, we'll be good.
