Hey Sistah....I'll help you kill them.

I came close when Staci (with an i as she pointed out) Called me Nikki. I told her my full name so why she thought it would be okay to familarize herself with me like that I don't know.

Congrats, Des, on going back!!! One of these days, maybe, I'll have the money to go back and finish my master's....maybe.

I'm very happy for you girl.

And I'm ecstatic to see you back in the AH.

Congrats and good luck D.

I don't understand why getting your masters in Arts is any less significant than another area of study. Probably just a bunch of troglodites who can't understand why you'd do it if you can't make some big bucks from it (like the world needs more MBA's, right?).

As to the 18 year olds, just wound 'em and leave them to the jackals with MBA's.

I would say it is probably less rigorous than, say, engineering or astrophysics.

Lol yes but try getting an astrophysics major to make a drawing of a landscape in three point prespective then make it into a 6 by 8 foot oil painting all done with the impressionist method. ;)

Nowadays the idea of someone going to school for anything other than making more $$$ makes people stare. That's how far the idea of a liberal education has fallen and how fucking mercenary we've all become.

Humanities are due for a big upsurge in power and prestige as we finally come out of this money/business infatuation the world's been in for the last 20 years or so. We're way overdue. It's time we started paying more attention to the quality of life rather than the quantity of money. Unlike what most people think, the two are not the same.

Less rigorous perhaps, but I wonder how many of those who turn their noses up actually have degrees in engineering or astrophysics? I am betting the vast majority don't. To me a masters in anything is impressive, not neccessarily because you know more, but because you put in the time and work to earn it.

I would certainly agree with that.

On other points presented, I think I'd say thatas impressive as a thing can be, I'd still put astrophysics way up there past art. Its not an offense to art, not at all. My masters in philosophy = not as rigorous as astrophysics and I am not threatened by that notion.

I see you are located in Oxford Ms. As a graduate of Moo-U I already have your number ;)

This is a sore spot with me, I'm an artist and have had to fight off many people who are under the impression that art is painting flowers in a vase.
Everything you look at, pick up, are exposed to was designed by a creative mind. It's a universal focal point.
Davinci was a designer, his mind had the capacity to invent things before his time.
Great Cathedrals weren't based on mathimatical equations but from a vision of aesthetics stemming from a love of God and beauty.
Without the creative mind that sought to see the stars, you wouldn't have astrophysics.

The way I look at it, astrophysics can tell you how the universe works, but only the Humanities can tell you what it means.

Because of that, Humanities rule.

It's fine people tend to think what I do is all crayons and coloring books and eccentric behavior. I just don't get the whole "Oh a degrree in the arts, how nice." thing (see people tend to say it in the same way they tell a dog "good doggie." just get me a bow and call me fefe

Well, Da Vinci was an artist and a scientific genius (the two are not synonymous); the cathedrals were ornate and no doubt designed with beauty in mind, but were insanely complex engineering projects. None of that is to belittle art, but to recognize that Art doesn't need to gain importance by being painted as equally difficult as a lot of "hard science" work (or, Heaven forbid, mathematics).

It may be that a creative mind sought the stars, but that creative mind may have had absolutely no care for Art as a practice or a study... creativity and "art" are also not synonymous.

Personally, I like art. I have several friends who have completed their masters of fine arts, and I have been to their shows. Creative, interesting, appealing, emotive... they are skillful people. I've just never heard an artist defend what they do as being anywhere near what geneticists or physicists do.

But... then, it doesn't have to be.

I didn't see anyone say anything about 'being threatened'??

Its simply a matter of giving credit to anyone who puts in the time, effort and dedication to obtain a Masters IN ANY SUBJECT. There is no need to go into a discussion on whether one is better, or more worthy than another. That is an offence to anyone studying for their masters.

Lighten up Joe, don't turn this thread into yet another one of your humourless, take-everything-literally, never-ending philosphy-is-everything rambles.

Destinie, I'm immensely impressed. I hope everything goes well for you.

And now I'm ducking out for a while, cos I seem to have got a bit hot round the collar, and I don't like feeling like that. I may be back when I cool down.

Mat
