Back pain, maybe kidney infection

I understand that kidney infections can be debilitatingly painful. To the point where you can't move due to the pain.

I was out drinking last night, back has been sore for a few days but this morning when I woke up the pain was really bad. Since then I've tried stretching, hot bath, etc.. but it has just gotten worse and worse. It is to the point where I am reaching my max pain tolerance just to get across the room. Trying to drink water like a fish and all that.

Anyway, I'm finding that a part of me actually likes the pain.

Regardless, this is not good pain and I have to do something. I'm waiting on a friend to come over with water and maybe take me to the hospital.

Has anyone here ever had a really bad, painful kidney infection? This one seems to hurt more on the right side. The pain is bad enough now that my nuts are starting to ache.

Haven't had one myself but had a couple of friends who did. The pain is the least of your problems. Get yourself to a hospital, now.

I sure can't diagnose at a distance, but I think the idea of getting to the hospital is a really good one. I would do it as quickly as possible .... you're right that it's not a good pain. I've had kidney infections and what you describe could be that .... or a dozen other things.

I hope yours isn't serious.

My daughter gets them a lot - she was born with a reflux in one of her kidneys.

If you're also running a fever, it probably is an infection. Otherwise it could also be kidney stones - which I understand are even worse.

Getting to the hospital is a good idea for either. Kidney infections going untreated can lead to kidney failure. Kidney stones they can't really do much for, but they can give you some pain meds for it.

Get thee to the hospital NOW young man!!!! Sheeesh you Doms just need so much looking after don't you?!! Seriously, I hope you are up and about, back to usual soon, but certainly is not worth fooling around with at home. BTW, have you had your appendics removed? Not the usual place to get the pain, but then our bodies do sometimes shift the pain to a weaker area than where the real problem is at the time.

Catalina :rose:

When my friend got a kidney infection she was preggo, and thought she was having back labor, that's how painful it is. Plus you have two kidneys, one on each side, so if both are infected then your whole back will hurt.

GO TO THE HOSPITAL! By the time that Ella had that much pain one of her kidneys had failed, and the other was badly scarred. YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR KIDNEY'S TO FAIL!

Men.

Yup, I had one when I was 16 weeks pregnant. I was given a catheter to give a urine sample and the whole hospital was saying it was the worse they had ever seen...the Dr. didn't even wait for the lab to come back before admitting me.
I had pain that felt like my back was out, nothing too serious it was prbably a 2 on a 1-10 scale(but then again I have a high pain tollerance). I had tried baths, massage, tylenol, nothing worked too well. The only reason I went to the hospital was a 104 deg F fever that wouldn't stay gone when I took tylenol. I was addmitted with pylonephritis (kidney infection) and TSS from the infection. They gave me 3 antibiotics through IV and then sent me home with 2. They did an ultrasound to check my kidney function and bladder function too. It was funny cause I think the tech didn't read on my file that I was pregnant so when she put the ultrasound where my bladder should have been she was greated by a baby's face! She immediately lifted the scope turned off the monitor and asked "Are you pregnant?" worried that maybe I didn't know. I laughed so hard I almost fell off the table! I was admitted for five days (really I had to wait 24 hours after my last fever, so if I spiked another one it reset the clock) The food sucked, being waken up every 2 hours for vital signs and dopler for baby heart tones sucked, but I needed it all. Baby was fine, no abnormal heart rate (which is unusual according to my dr. when I had a fever the heart rate should have been faster)
If you think you have an infection get to the doc ASAP Kidney function is not something you want to mess with

LOTS of water. Hydration's good for both UTI's (urinary tract infections) kidney infections and for kidney stones.

And a dr's visit is advisable.

Still waiting on my friend to get here. No fever that I know of. It just hurts like mad. I did manage to amble into the bathroom earlier. Nothing strange there.

I need a nice little subbie to come and take care of me! Damnit!

I had a kidney infection about a year or so ago. With me it hurt more on the right side as well. It sucked. I was in bed for a couple of days before I finally went to the hospital. And I was there for HOURS. They somehow LOST my pee sample and had to take another one, and then they wanted to keep me there and pump me with fluids. By the time they finally sent me home the pharmacies were closed. Didn't feel good the entire night. The next morning once I got my drugs I started feeling better though.

Get to the hospital asap.

I got water and cranberry juice and something to eat so I think I'll make it through the night. I'll just end up doing a walk in at my dr's office in the morning.

This sux.

If it were a UTI the cranberry juice would be the best thing for you. If it actually is a kidney infection than don't wait for the morning, call a freaking ambulance if necessary but get to the hospitol. An acute infection can destroy your kidney's in no time and the last thing you want is to be stuck on dialysis or worse.

Just out of curiosity what makes you think it's an infection? Did you have one prior to going out with your friends and perhaps aggravate with alcohol or have you had one before and recognize the symptoms? From what you said about the pain you could also have slipped a disk in your back which hurts like a sonofabitch and the pain will radiate so it could cause other areas of your body to hurt as well. Not much the ER could do for that except give you pain killers.

Don't be a pussy!

A real alpha male would just ride this one out!

If your body can't fight the infection you deserve to die!

That's it, I'm definately going in to the doctor in the morning.

I totally sympathize. Just over a year ago, I had issues - my symptoms were between kidney stones and a kidney infection. They finally decided to have me strain everything and take a broad spectrum antibiotic until they got a culture back. So I did. And 2 days later (and a few vicodins, too) I passed a kidney stone. It sucked.

I hope that you get better soon.

Shit if that pain is on the right and kind of under your rib and REALLY painful like you can't stand up it could be pancreatitus, especially if you drink a lot.

I did manage to get an appointment. My doc is on vacation so I get to see a nurse practitioner (thank God, someone who is competent). I have an hour and a half to somehow make it into the shower, dress and get to the doctors office.

And the pain is not just below the ribs, it's lower back like right at the top of the pelvic bone, both sides hurt like mad but the right is much worse.

you have a southern accent so it's the right thing to do.

Thanks for the crazy 2:00 phone call this morning. You're lucky that I can translate Canadian into English. Now go eat something and get some sleep!

I have had kidney problems all my life and have seen numerous specialists. Kidney infections will be painful in the flank and also, in the front, on the opposite side. So, if you have pain on the left side of your back, the right side of your stomach will hurt. Other signs of kidney infection are high fever, vomiting, blood in your urine, and exhaustion to name a few. I'm not a doctor, but it sounds to me like it could be a kidney stone, with the amount of pain you describe. I'm glad you made an appointment.

you like it.

I saw the NP earlier. She said it might be either an infection, back spasm or kidney stone. Prolly the damn stone but I'm hoping that it's not.

Also, the nurse gave me two shots in the ass. One in each cheek. One was an anti-inflammatory and the other was a muscle relaxer.

It's making me a little loopy and foggy. My back still fucking hurts though. No painkillers until she finds out exactly what it is that is the problem.

Man, I remember when I went in for my infection. They asked if I was in pain I said probably a 2/10 so we got to play pat the fists on the back. OMG it hurt so bad! I couldn't sit up straight when they were done with me!

Hope they find what's going on with you!
