Ummmmm I hate to break the news to you folks but red food dye is made from Carmine, which is derived from the Cochineal....an insect

I've always figured that was the reason it's always tastes like...gross...

And yes the red smarties are gross

He stated the red and blue dyes tend to be slightly bitter, much like cake icing. I asked why they didn't modify the dyes to fix the taste, and he said, "Frankly, we just don't have enough people complaining to make it worth our while."

told my son I could taste the difference---he didnt believe me---so we did a blind taste test---

I can taste the difference between all of them---though red and yellow are pretty close enough that I mistake one for the other about 25"% of the time


this needs to be a science fair experiment!!!!
