…that the three essential ingredients in a novel were…plot, plot and plot…

Well…since I had not embarked upon writing a novel at the time, I filed that away.

Once I started thinking about a novel length story, the plot and the theme, the author’s message, was instantly clear to me; I knew what I wanted to say and why.

I am now engaged in yet another novel, I have the plot and theme well in mind, but the damned characters are giving me a hissy fit.

It is fairly simple to keep the plot and theme consistent if one is writing from a perspective of personal convictions; one need not invent or create an alien or obtuse intent.

But to create a character that reflects the plot and the theme but still remains a fully developed entity, in tune with and consistent with himself and the story line…well…that…to me…becomes the most difficult ingredient in creating a believable yarn.

I am considering writing and posting a story online, somewhat like the ‘Julie’ character in the film and book, “Julie and Julia”, to elicit input as to how others perceive my attempt to congruently combine plot and character in such a way that it is natural and not obvious or fabricated.

Thoughts?

It is late and the Shnapps are in play...but this is one of those late night things that if I don't do it now, I never will...

I like to restrict my characters to demonstrable fight or flee responses; they never stop to smell the roses or contemplate their navels. They act bravely and cowardly etc. Scenery, dialogue, et al are formulated to push problems at them.

I keep them too busy to be difficult.
