It looks like we'll have to take on the whole Middle East. Is this an alarmist news story, or a legitimate sale to another country? Does the word "Scud" make you think of the Iraqui attacks on Israel, and Saudi Arabia? do you think we're over reacting to N. Korea's arms trade? Am I wasting my keyboard keys posting this thread? :D

–– A ship carrying a dozen Scud-type missiles from North Korea was intercepted in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday, U.S. officials said. They said the missiles were believed to be headed for Yemen.

The ship was stopped and boarded about 600 miles east of the Horn of Africa, the officials said.

U.S. intelligence had been tracking the vessel closely, said U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The ship contained about a dozen short- to medium-range missiles, similar to the Scud missiles used by Iraq in the Persian Gulf War, the officials said. It also contained missile parts.

The ship was stopped and boarded by a patrol boat in the region.

The patrol boat was not a U.S. ship, but that of another nation, a U.S. official said. However, a U.S. team rushed to the scene to participate in the search, the official said.

The ship "had another flag, but it was a North Korea ship," the official said.

The ship was held in the area while the search continued.

Officials said the shipment did not appear to be headed for Iraq.

Yemen has been identified by the United States as a nation that has harbored terrorists, although its government has been an ally of the United States in the war against global terrorism. Yemen's port of Aden was the site of the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole by terrorists, which killed 17 sailors.

Yemeni officials contacted late Tuesday said they had no information concerning the ship, its contents or its boarding by international forces.

The boarding of the ship occurred as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was traveling in the area.

:D

I don't know, but calling an entire nation "evil" is a good way to alienate the oppressed citizens of that country.

The use of axis in this context just makes my eyes bleed. Please tell me his writers are not that stupid.

Or those that live in Las Vegas County.

it just reminds me of austin powers and dr. evil... thats how absurd it is

It sounds a little reactionary to me, almost like the bad guys from a really old comic book.

Personally, I prefer my adjectives to be based on facts rather than perceptions.

Axis is okay........kinda WW2-ish..

I prefer the more Star Trekish, "Triad!" Here's my story source HStick, and the Dubya literary critics, what words would you substitute? Hmmm

You're right, it's more of a pump of evil.. A snap-on of evil if you will.

How about, "A hint of evil?"

A little dab of evil, a smidgen of evil, or maybe "The dark side!" Luke, I AM your Mother.....:D

On the contrary, those that know that "evil" is an apt description are likely to be energized that finally, someone is looking out for them.

Assuming, of course, they were even allowed to read this.

It never ceases to amaze me how a country being "evil," is okay, but us calling them "evil" is cause for alarm.

Just an update...

(AP) - The U.S. Navy released the shipment of North Korean-made Scud missiles it seized, sending the vessel and its cargo on their way Wednesday to the original destination of Yemen. White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said the United States had authority to stop and search the vessel, but not to seize it. "There is no clear authority to seize the shipment," Fleischer told a news conference in Washington. "The merchant vessel is being released." :D

"In Speech, Bush Calls Iraq, Iran and North Korea 'Axis of Evil" -- N.Y. Times, 1/30/02

ANGERED BY SNUBBING, LIBYA, CHINA
SYRIA FORM AXIS OF JUST AS EVIL
Cuba, Sudan, Serbia Form Axis of Somewhat Evil; Other Nations Start Own Clubs

Beijing (SatireWire.com) — Bitter after being snubbed for membership in the "Axis of Evil," Libya, China, and Syria today announced they had formed the "Axis of Just as Evil," which they said would be way eviler than that stupid Iran-Iraq-North Korea axis President Bush warned of his State of the Union address.

Axis of Evil members, however, immediately dismissed the new axis as having, for starters, a really dumb name. "Right. They are Just as Evil... in their dreams!" declared North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. "Everybody knows we're the best evils... best at being evil... we're the best."

Diplomats from Syria denied they were jealous over being excluded, although they conceded they did ask if they could join the Axis of Evil.

"They told us it was full," said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"An Axis can't have more than three countries," explained Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. "This is not my rule, it's tradition. In World War II you had Germany, Italy, and Japan in the evil Axis. So you can only have three. And a secret handshake. Ours is wicked cool."

THE AXIS PANDEMIC

International reaction to Bush's Axis of Evil declaration was swift, as within minutes, France surrendered.

Elsewhere, peer-conscious nations rushed to gain triumvirate status in what became a game of geopolitical chairs. Cuba, Sudan, and Serbia said they had formed the Axis of Somewhat Evil, forcing Somalia to join with Uganda and Myanmar in the Axis of Occasionally Evil, while Bulgaria, Indonesia and Russia established the Axis of Not So Much Evil Really As Just Generally Disagreeable.

With the criteria suddenly expanded and all the desirable clubs filling up, Sierra Leone, El Salvador, and Rwanda applied to be called the Axis of Countries That Aren't the Worst But Certainly Won't Be Asked to Host the Olympics; Canada, Mexico, and Australia formed the Axis of Nations That Are Actually Quite Nice But Secretly Have Nasty Thoughts About America, while Spain, Scotland, and New Zealand established the Axis of Countries That Sometimes Ask Sheep to Wear Lipstick.

"That's not a threat, really, just something we like to do," said Scottish Executive First Minister Jack McConnell.

While wondering if the other nations of the world weren't perhaps making fun of him, a cautious Bush granted approval for most axes, although he rejected the establishment of the Axis of Countries Whose Names End in "Guay," accusing one of its members of filing a false application. Officials from Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chadguay denied the charges.

Israel, meanwhile, insisted it didn't want to join any Axis, but privately, world leaders said that's only because no one asked them.
