I think mr johnston that it’s:

The problem with you people from central florida is that you’ve spent so much of your lives at Disney World that you start to sound like Mickey. So S T F U and start reading…we real writers are tired of your whining…

Thats the bottomline of your point: Modern people have no idea what Shakespeare said, and they people who understood him are long dead.

Well, maybe not quite outta here... :D

Au contraire, my dear James: the people who make the effort to understand delight in what he wrote, and have done so for centuries. If you presume to judge literature, judge it fairly--in the context of its time and place as well as for how effectively the story is told and the characters developed.

Otherwise, your "improved" Stephen Crane will be the subject of many a belly laugh in 50 or 60 years.

"Hey--what's a 'high board fence'?"
"Some old thing."

The problem, Scouries, is you abandon the field when you fling turds and run.

This is not about judging literature, its about trying to improve on it. The improvement is what art is all about. It's called "state of the art."

James, I have no problem with language and linguistic conventions evolving. Contemporary literature is best written for contemporary audiences, in my opinion. Where I take exception is when you assert that you can "improve" literature that is, essentially, a snapshot of its time--much as your writing will be a snapshot of this time.

A Model A should stay a Model A--it's a unique example of its culture. Putting fuel injection and pollution control devices on it doesn't make it a better Model A--it just bastardizes it.

Build on the past? Sure. Rewrite it to suit yourself? No, thanks.

A child stood on a street corner, pressed one shoulder against a high board fence, swayed his other shoulder to and fro, and kicked gravel about.

Give it some life and eliminate the fact-fact-fact...

A child stood on a street corner with his shoulder pressed against a high board fence, his other shoulder swaying to and fro as he carelessly kicked the gravel beneath his feet.

The way you've constructed it, it reads the same way as if every little bullet point was a simple sentence.

A child stood on a street corner. He pressed one shoulder against a high board fence. He swayed his other shoulder to and fro. He kicked gravel about.

No flow.

As an aside, you have one thing going for you, for certain. Scouries doesn't appear to like you, and that's a redeeming quality *laugh*

I had a good laugh the other day. Pulled up one of my own stories that I want to turn into a novel. Read it through and wondered why the hell I got such good feedback on it. The central elements were good but it needs serious editing. I could only see that after having left it alone for a few months though.

People don't come here to read Moby Dick, the come to read Moby's Dick.

Exactly! Competent authors see where improvement is required, and dilettantes dont. My hunch is Masters are never satisfied with their creations. But the dilettantes want gold stars for everyone.

I came here to read good porn, so we not only forfeit Moby Dick, we forfeit Moby's dick, too.

I'm forever editing my stuff. Some of mine posted here are on the third or fourth tweak. Nobody is ever really satisfied with what they've written as time goes along, I suspect.

But, changed does not equal improved.

I've found some really good stuff here and some really bad. That's what the favorite's list is for, so you can keep track of what is put out by the authors you like.

I also think that while there is a certainly objectivity to what makes good writing, when it comes to porn there is a lot of subjectivity to what people here like. I may not consider some stories good where others do.

ETA:

Example - I read and voted on the Lit Awards Poetry last night and I don't think any of the ones I chose were the front runners.

I was shocked to see one of mine in the erotic poetry category and it's definitely not a front runner. :D

A couple of my choices are still one-vote-getters too :)

Heavens.

Is this another poo flinging thread?

Eh, it's what you make of it. If you put the appropriate people on ignore, there's a discussion in it somewhere.

Gnome - I'm attempting to avoid braying.

Dark - Yeah, I just read two stories that are in the contest and didn't enjoy them at all though they've gotten lots of votes. To each his own.

Jomar - Good luck! :rose::kiss:

Florence King wrote something like 60 porn novels before she broke into newspaper writing. She dismisses a lot of porn as little more than TO DO LISTs.

If someone has a LIT story they recommend as superlative, post the link. I know they exist because I come across them occasionally.

Well, that's the thing, isn't it?

I didn't even notice the thread at first since I have several of these folks on ignore.

(Hence the poo.)

:D
