Anzac Day's not a concert says PM

The Big day Out, or a sombre relection on one of New Zealand's bloodiest military tragedies?

Debate is raging over the 90th anniversary commemorations of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli after Prime Minister Helen Clark was blamed for vetoing a performance by aging Aussie rocker John Farnham.

Miss Clark yesterday rejected the claim, made in Melbourne's Herald Sun, but said she believed "loud music" had no place at a "killing field".

It emerged yesterday Australian Prime Minister John Howard also felt Farnham performing at Gallipoli would be "inappropriate".

It seems the average Aussie agrees. A poll on the Sydney Morning Herald's website last night was running four to one against the performance.

Farnham, best known for hits ranging from You're the Voice to Sadie (The Cleaning Lady) and a cover of Rain Drops Keep Falling on my Head, was asked to perform before the Dawn Service at Anzac Cove by the Office of Australian War Graves.

An Australian Government spokesman said Miss Clark and Mr Howard discussed the concert at the Apec summit in Chile in November.

"Both agreed that it would be inappropriate to have a concert at Gallipoli given the solemnity of the occasion," the spokesman said.

The plug was pulled on Farnham's appearance in December, and Miss Clark and Mr Howard will thrash out details of what will replace it when they meet in Auckland this weekend.

Miss Clark said she had never heard of Farnham, but was opposed to his playing because of her "strong views about the sacred" nature of Gallipoli.

"Whatever is done there on Anzac Day must be in keeping with the spirit of the brave men who died."

She was supported by Returned and Services Association chief executive Pat Herbert.

"It's a cemetery, it's a remembrance observance, it's not a concert, and that's nothing against John Farnham or anyone else for that matter."

But National Party leader Don Brash said Miss Clark was refusing to move with the times. Farnham would have respected the solemnity of Gallipoli, and such acts were needed to keep the commemorations relevant to younger generations.

Just popping in to leave a helpful hint, when painting fingernails do not resume typing until all nails are completely dry, in situations where the paint does transfer to the keys standard removal practices should not be applied as polish remover will also successfully remove the a, s and d letters from the keyboard.

Another helpful hint - keyboards don't like coke either I had to borrow one off my friend because I spilled a little bit on the number pad and it had a hissy fit

im going away with my boy on the weekend. i dont know where we are going so that will be excting.

i spent far to much money on underwear this week. SOOOO sexy stuff though! i look great hope he likes it

uni goes back in a week so im enjoying a small break.

If you want full briefs you can pay $2 a pair, but if you want a nice, lacey g string it can set you back $15, I think we have to pay a surcharge for them to cut the extra material off! Hope you have a great weekend! I'm off to Keith Urban tonight so I better finish getting ready and drive there before he starts without me!
