Aussies! Check in here!

Evening all,

Has been one of those sleepy days for me. Have been rather tired all day and don't know why. Starting to come alive.

So Bridget fell on her sword or was that her spreadsheet? Like how dumb are you to put your biases in writing. Only reason is she didn't think anyone would see it which is a dumb thing to do in politics since it was her own side that did the leaking. Barnaby now wants back in. Did the Nat's not learn anything?

So the Republicans in the US are just as bad. They have set a dangerous precedent for future Presidents. Actually Rump has show how broken the US democracy has become. It seems to be based on people doing the right thing and the President has way too much power. It also relies on both major parties having a conscience. Sounds like a really dodgy system. And as for their electoral college thing, no wonder most Americans can't be bothered to vote, knowing their individual vote doesn't count. Should be quite simple, whom ever gets the most votes wins right, then again it is a system based only the wealthy voting, so not good.

Got my latest power bill and the cost actually went down. Not quite sure how that happened. First time in a number of years when the cost went down. Haven't used the air con much so that could be one answer. Anyway with the savings I can buy another season of Game of Thrones. Currently viewing The Walking Dead seasons. Up to season 4 and realised I missed some of the episodes. Well it was a long time ago but remembered other episodes. The sound bar makes all the difference when watching these DVD's. Even started using it for video games. Very impressed with it. One of those cases of not knowing what your missing out on till you get it.

No painting this week. Stuff in the garden needs attention thanks to the warm weather and the rain. Doesn't take much for the garden to go nuts. A little humidity and wet stuff. Also watched the NFL Superbowl today which is kinda a tradition with me. When I was working I'd take the day off. And the other tradition is to have bacon and eggs while watching it. Not something I do too much off these days. Not really a breakfast person.

Hope the rest of the week is good for you. Cool in Melbourne at the moment but will warm up by the end of the week.

Morning all,

A rather humid few days in Melbourne town thanks to those NE winds. Weather coming from the east which is not typical, then again nothing is typical these days when it comes to weather. Whilst we have had the humidity and clouds, not much of the wet stuff.

When the last big deluge hit Sydney the other year I advised some friends in Sydney to buy a boat even though they don't live near water. Seems I was right. Good rain for some of the areas that needed it and some of the big fires are now out.

Saw Q+A as they are now branding it. Paul Kelly's song 'Sleep Australia Sleep' is very timely as to where we are as a country. At some point lets hope the general population wakes up and votes in leaders that do what is needed and that self interest is put aside to do what is right and what is needed, otherwise this amazing and unique country is fucked.

Finished another painting task yesterday. One more on the list to do. Have also added a couple of other small painting tasks before I move outside. Off to Bunnings today to get paint for the external doors and purchase a new electric line trimmer. My old one still works but it's a bit of a light weight compared to the ones they have these days. They are also cheaper.

Hope the rest of the week is good for you. I need some more beer with all this humid weather that keeps coming.

February warm and dry over in the west. Not too bad a time to hang around the place and not fly to places for a while.
I'm glad sane heads gave prevailed and dismissed the plea for 100000 overseas student exemptions from the quarantine measures. I know the sector is about to be on its knees but like the Brit who managed to catch up and spread it through a few countries, it's far easier to not have to deal with an outbreak here. At 30 deg and dry weather it's lifespan here would be pretty short but all the same imagine trying to implement and restrict people movement here. Have to say that China is doing a pretty impressive job in doing what needs to be done.
Price of oil goes down remarkably but not at our pumps yet. Aussie peso going down as well so cancelling out some of it. keep an eye out on the apps for cheaper fuel.

Hey fellow Aussies,

Adelaide based here. Glad everyone was ok with the fires. Some down this way but not as bad as NSW and Vic obviously. Always good to chat to friendly Australians. Stay safe this weekend.

Good to hear that you can stay put for a while. People kept telling me that travelling for work must be fun.....nope would rather stay home.

I discovered that in my suburb we have been getting ripped off for a long time on petrol prices. Driving a few suburbs down to a less house pricing area I found that the petrol was cheaper by around 10c on the same day. Was not impressed. Considering we pay the OS price for petrol we will never win cause the govt gets more revenue.

Heard that Caltex will be back to Ampol sometime this year. Now that takes me back to my youth. I also remember when Myer was actually a store for the people. They used to have a nice ice cream and hot dog area in the city store here in Melbourne. But that was a long time ago now.

Afternoon all,

Just finished another couple of small painting tasks. Due to the rain had to switch things around but not a major hassle. Seems it will be wet for the rest of the week so the stuff I want to do will have to wait till next week.

I learned something new about paint last week which is, you pay more depending on the colour. Now I've been painting house stuff since I was a kid and am used to the pricing structure but this is new one. Apparently it costs more for certain colours even in the same brand. Didn't know that. Which has got to make you wonder why people would want to buy paint in those colours or even why it is offered. Kind of like the price of petrol. Why it costs more in adjacent suburbs? Well someone is making money.

So the whole sports grant thing isn't going away. Sporting clubs with no female teams getting a grant while those with female teams missing out. Asking for a change room in a regional area and getting a swimming pool in a city suburb. Did love the look on Eric's face when he had his arse handed to him by the auditor. Now that was priceless stuff. Love to see politicians get a dose of reality.

Just shows the level of corruption we have in govt and the fact it is being justified which is just so wrong on all levels. Kinda like funding a new coal fired power station. Why! Apart from getting votes of course. But with my taxes no less. Funny how the party that is totally for private industry now isn't listening to its donors. We have privatised lots of govt jobs in the name of efficiency and all we have got for it is that it costs more to run the same services and also lost the expertise to challenge what these contractors offer. The blind leading the fucking blind. Becoming like the US with every passing business plan which usually lasts 3 yrs till some contractor has an idea to get more money. We will hear stories about a lot of the money raised for the bushfires going to consultants. No doubt 4 Corners will do a story on that one when the time is right.

Been watching The Walking Dead series. Have got to episodes I don't remember seeing. Much prefer this series to the Game of Thrones stuff. Which just goes to prove that having lots of boobs on screen doesn't necessarily make for a good story.

Hope the rest of the week is good for you. As usual feel free to tell me I'm wrong about everything I've posted today cause that's how social media works. People love to tell you you're wrong. Gives them a sense of purpose, but nothing I haven't dealt with all my working life. In fact if you really want to feel important hold a fucking meeting but only fill the chairs with people you like otherwise the truth might come out and that will never do if you want to feel powerful.

People tell me I'm wrong, till they realise I'm right about stuff. But they have to get there on their own then claim it was their idea. I just smile when that happens, oh and have some scotch. Do love my single malt scotch these days. Are we there yet?

It's 5pm, I say pour away.

I assume the price differential on the paint colours is to do with the products used to develop the colour and the strength of the tints required which may also vary with the type of paint. Purple was the colour of royalty and imperial classes because it was very labour intensive and hard to make, with so much of the sea mollusks that went into making the dye were needed to produce tiny amounts of dye. Painters centuries ago valued highly any blue paints they could get because of the extraordinary cost, so they were sparingly used. I realise chemical science has come a long way but some of the same principles probably apply. I know tint strengths can make a difference, from having just bought sample pots (same paint base) for the same colour in different strengths eg half and quarter. Can't say I did the painting afterwards, so I admire your life long efforts.

Enjoy the fruits of your labours, and the single malt. I'm sure it's deserved.

Hi all, Canberra guy here. Luckily we have avoided the thunderstorms, but it has been a bit of a summer. Hail, fire, floods. Hope everyone is safe.

Bahahahahah, well I am not gonna say your wrong, cause your right! spot on in fact.

I see this shit on a daily basis. I don't get invited to meetings any more as, I tend to tell the truth and they can't handle the truth unfortunately.
I am not going to sit there, like the head nodders, and yes people, and tell you what I think you want to hear, I am not wired like that.

I say it like it is, and if that's not what you want to hear, well I'm sorry but that's how it is.

The bullshit, corruption, and twisting of facts and things makes me sick.
It's not just at the upper levels either, it goes right across the board from Federal, State, and Local Government and across most areas of government. Been in this area most of my life and there is not much I haven't seen go on at various times. If only the people actually knew what actually goes on, no one would vote for any of them EVER because the Party doesn't matter they are all the same, different party name same shit.

sorry end rant, but yeah your right..........sooooooooooo fucking right!

Fuel prices....check on the motormouth website (don't use the app...spam) or EzySt app. Fuel prices and a saw tooth history of their price cycles. Areas over here with a few stations in competition to each other are, shock, starting to compete every day. Would I go miles out of my way, probably not for a dollar, but out of general principles I would go a street over on the way home if I saw it was doing the right thing.
Holden gone, not surprising. Might be a few cheap deals if people can stomach expensive parts. It was all about the subsidies anyway.
Paint....incremental pricing. The ones on the colour swatch 70-20-10 patterns are the cash cows. No one thinks about prices when they decide on the colour scheme. I did know an old bushy who painted his house in Mission Brown because it was permanently on special. Every room, gutter, fence, Mission Brown.
Coal power... The business case for base power is presumably such that the Govt should assist investors by doing all the pre approvals and environment permits so that when the investment comes in it will be able to be applied immediately. No need for government investment if the business case is solid and the red tape is eliminated.... Not too many funds lining up to invest in a 30-50 year asset.
Female change rooms, that's novel. We had to change for hockey behind the trees. Character building you know. You got pretty good at all the tricks of the trade in changing within the width of a tree otherwise the blokes over in the manual arts block got an eyeful. Arms in the sleeve, bra off, sports bra on, speed of light shirt change, sports skirt over the top, jeans and knickers down, sports knickers up. A run across the oval to the public loos if you wanted a pee before the game, let alone anything else, and everyone knows girls don't sweat or need a shower after. But shit, that public pool down in Carlton might need a bit of retiling. We have a slight problem in this country and most others between what is legal and what is right. Regrettably as the US is finding out too, governance has been on the basis of legal, moral and by convention, but the courts and senate will only find redress on the basis of legal. Shame the next election will be out of memory.
Fine weather over this side of the country. Without having to travel to meetings I might just have to take advantage of this and see how many nice places I can video conference from for the next few months.

Brisbane Here

Actually out near Ipswich. Just found this thread and thought I’d jump in nd say hi. I’m Michael, 47 married guy.

Hi all, Canberra guy here. Luckily we have avoided the thunderstorms, but it has been a bit of a summer. Hail, fire, floods. Hope everyone is safe.

Have felt sorry for you guys in Canberra with all that smoke from fires in NSW. Heard that it was also invading office buildings. You must be glad the rain came thru the place.

Welcome to the thread.

Welcome to the thread.

Best way to get involved and get to know people is just post stuff about your area.

Now I'm not a local but I thought people in Ipswich didn't consider themselves Brisbanites. Kinda like the Newcastle and Sydney thing.

Not calling it Brisvegas. Been to Vegas and Brissy is nothing like it :D

Afternoon all,

Was doing some prep for what I thought was going to be my last planned painting task, then saw the new weather forecast and got pissed off. Rain for the first three days of the week. Seriously annoying. Was going to paint the two external doors now that I worked out I can use the old paint I have in the garage which is still good. So will have to wait. Don't really want to do work on the weekend. Since I retired I try not to do stuff on the weekends.

Had to replace the toaster as it went phutt! Blew the safety switch. Felt like I was camping out doing toast on the grill. Had that toaster for 10 yrs so I guess it did its time.

So the Aussies lost their first T20. They couldn't handle the Indian spinners. Got out played.

The build next door has finally installed their storm water down pipes. Had waterfalls every time it rained. Which surprised me cause councils are very touchy these days about storm water not being allowed to flow onto properties. It's a no no these days, but seems if you're a contractor then it's ok.

Up to Season 9 of The Walking Dead series. What a journey those characters have been on. One thing is for sure, I wouldn't of survived at my current age. It's kinda a current story what with the Coronavirus killing people. We are quite vulnerable creatures us humans which we tend to forget but nature is there to remind us that whilst we are the top predator on this planet we aren't untouchable. Something is going to get you so make the best of life till that happens. And above all don't be a dick to your fellow humans.

Hope the rest of your weekend is good for you.

Afternoon all,

Well the predicted rain for Melbourne town has been patchy. Got some thunderstorm activity yesterday afternoon but overall not much of the wet stuff. More of a splash and dash.

Finished off the latest series of The Walking Dead. Seems to be building up to a major clash. Will definitely buy the next series when its available. Was sad to see a number of characters killed off in one episode, most of them the younger ones. Will go back to the Game of Thrones series even though I'm not invested much in that story. Can very much take it or leave it.

Waiting for better weather to get to painting the external doors. Feels like I'm just marking time. On the positive side my knee seems to be improving. At least I can get back on the exercise bike even though I have to take it slow. Still hurts a lot.

So Mr Potato Head can't tell the different between Left Wing extremism and Muslim extremism. Really? Given his job he should know what the terms mean. he just can't admit he got it wrong. It's not in his nature which is a bad thing for someone in his job. And his current and former Lib members are excusing his words. Was watching The Drum and a former Lib MP defended his words. Just shows that even when they leave politics the old loyalties still cloud their minds. No wonder nobody trusts the polities to tell the truth. What should happen is that everyone in business, local council, journalism, etc has to wear a badge defining which political party they side with. Would like to see on Wikipedia that "alternative facts" is defined as Lies.

Q+A was also interesting this week. To see a Chinese Rep put under scrutiny which he would not be used to. We would be naïve to assume there were not Chinese operatives in the audience. I'm sure his minders where taking names of people who laughed at him or disagreed with his views. To hear Stan Grant confront the Chinese Rep with the truth means Stan can never go back to China. Also to learn that Aussie journalists were assaulted by Chinese govt officials was disturbing. If we did that here in Australia to Chinese journalists it would make world news and we would be accused of yet more racist activities. It should also be clear that the Chinese govt doesn't define the Chinese people who want what everyone wants...freedom.

That facial recognition software that Australia helped the Chinese govt to develop will no doubt be used against fellow Australians. How stupid are we? It was quite interesting that the discussions on Q+A about Asians was only about those with a Chinese heritage. Hopefully people know that there are other ethnicities in Asia. It is interesting that when we talk about Asians here in Australia we refer to those from a Chinese heritage, but when they talk about Asians in the UK they mean those with an Indian or Pakistani heritage. We need to be careful how we define Asian otherwise we would be guilty of inadvertent racism. We don't need to piss of yet another culture.

It seems very clear that the Chinese govt lied to the rest of the world on the coronavirus thing which has led to the spread of the infection worldwide. The lack of freedom of speech led to the coverup. Arresting the doctor who first detected the virus is not something a democratic society does. It has cost thousands of lives and now it's on the verge of a pandemic spreading to Europe and the world. Who would of thought a virus from China would spread to Italy of all places. Just shows we are too dependent on China for goods and trade. Lesson is to diversify and not just chase high export prices and cheap goods. As part of trade we should also look at WHO practices in countries as we trade with. I'm sure it's something that hasn't been thought of before.

Might have found the solution to my PC's start up issues. Found it purely by accident. Seems that if I just don't turn off the wall switch to the power board for the PC, then everything works as normal. The startup works as normal and the keyboard even works. No need to unplug then plug it back in. Don't have to go thru a boot up sequence. Will see if this is really the solution.

Hope the rest of the week is good for you.

So, as a personal good-on-ya mate, for staying employed for a full year and still enjoying the work and not succumbing to the old demons of ptsd, i purchased a small token of encouragement.

Good job self! Now you have to spend the next few years working too, to pay for the big bitch.

So much for semi-retirement but it has been extremely healthy for me. Taking a week off next week to visit some family and put a few kilometres on my new side chick.

My wifey likes her. She calls it riding pillion. I call a three way.

Afternoon all,

Regional pool in Northern Sydney well wonder if that will lower house prices? I guess next the govt will be telling us that Mt Druitt is the outback. Since that pool is defined by the Mayor of North Sydney as a regional pool I guess people from Mt Druitt can rock up. There would be lattes being spilled everywhere. "We banned the boats, now they're coming by train." Mr Potato Head would be pushing thru new laws to ban trains.

Saw Jacinta take on Smoko today and it was a beautiful thing. Although Eric must be totally confused that a woman could talk like that, he would be wondering why she isn't home looking after her baby.

Had a maintenance day today. Was trialling some new washers as part of a solution to a problem but they caused another issue so have gone back to the ones I normally use. Issues with that shower have been a suck it and see thing to solve. Mainly suck. Still, I have saved money on plumbers.

Lots of panic about the coronavirus. It's only a matter of time now, can't keep it out so no point in panicking. Had a Chinese takeaway yesterday and guess what I didn't get infected. So much crap going on about that. Chinatown here in Melbourne is like a ghost town. Normally lots of people traffic. No reason for the panic.

Just saw the latest weather forecast and it's as if it knows I want to do some painting. So fucking annoyed at the moment. Suddenly more rain on the forecast in the coming days. Can't get two dry days in a row.

Hope your weekend is good for you.

Public holiday here in the west today, but a few sore heads need it after the Highway to Hell event yesterday to mark 40 years since Bon Scott passed away. The actual highway featured in the song, Canning Hwy between the Raffles Hotel at Canning Bridge and Fremantle was closed to traffic and trucks carrying tribute bands moved along the route with a few hundred thousand along the way.
There were the odd comment about public gatherings etc, but in the warm weather here there is not much people are going to worry about.
There is more to worry about in the great credit unwinding on the stockmarkets than transmission at present. When gold takes a dive, even as a safehaven, you can see the margin call positions starting to happen.
In the meantime, wash your hands and enjoy the sunshine.

Ha, imagine if you will the catastrophe one could catalyse if they were to say release weaponised virii within a certain global financial seat. It could crush economies... /tinfoilhatsforall

Anyhoo... washing my hands and off to take your advice. Going to visit grandkids in Brisbane corner of the state. It's a two-three hour ride depending on how sidetracked i get. First time off I've had in a year. Finally get to meet my little granddaughter.

In other news, i was wandering on here and found your Am-pics thread Missswannie, you are a generous girl. Keep up the good work.

Blue skys prevail and i hope they remain. I've packed wet gear but don't want to need it. Will get lots of photos and might even share some. I'm such a privacy freak on here and it's probably a safer place than facebook. Go figure.

Stay safe. Wear a condom. More people die from aids than corona.

Afternoon all,

Well the rain is just about to hit Melbourne. Since I couldn't do that paint task on the external doors, decided to do an optional paint task. If I wasn't looking to sell up I wouldn't of bothered. One of those easy painting tasks your teenage kids could do assuming you can get them off their phones. Didn't have that issue when I was a kid plus I had a dad that was intent on teaching me some skills at an early age. Even my mum got me to do my own ironing when I was around 13.

So all that promised money for the bushfire impacted communities is now being held back due to the federal and state govt's having too many rules. Fucking accountants are at it again just making people's lives more frustrating. Some people not qualifying because the govt accountants are assuming those businesses are going to make the same profit they made last FY. How exactly is that going to happen if they lost everything? Severe lack of common sense by all forms of govt on this one. If your personal accountant is struggling to fill in the paperwork required, how is the average small business owner going to understand what is needed to get the assistance? This will end up like the NDIS, people not qualifying due to a technicality.

Wonder if businesses will think about suing the Chinese govt for their lack of proper food handling processes in their markets? If they aren't doing "best practice" then are they putting the lives of people and economies in other countries at risk? Probably not a question that has been asked before.

Not sure why people are stockpiling toilet paper. Whilst the coronavirus might be giving the stock market the shits, that doesn't translate to people getting the shits. Would of thought if anything hand sanitizer, wet wipes, cold and flu tablets, lemon and honey would be preferable. Personally I'm thinking of stocking up on single malt Scotch. Firstly it's a disinfectant. Secondly if I have to quarantine well I'll need something to keep my spirits up. On the up side if you wanted to go to your favourite pub or restaurant without the crowds, what better time to do it.

Says a lot when the PM of the country has to shame the banks into passing on the full rate cut. He obviously thinks they haven't changed their culture which is interesting for a Lib PM since the LNP are all about profit ahead of people. Although now the buzz words are.."back in balance"..rather than.."back in black". Then again the far right of the party would not have been happy about the reference to "black". "Back in white" just doesn't have the same ring to it, besides it's the black stuff on the white stuff that makes them salivate. Just don't mention rainbows to them.

I saw on the news that there is more rain for people in the centre of the country which I'm guessing is good news even it means floods. Not sure Sydney needs anymore rain. Changed my plans for the rest of the week due to the coming rain in Melbourne. Don't need to be caught in a downpour driving across the city if I can help it. Might try my trick I did last time we had some decent rain. Rather than wash the car I put it out in the rain for a couple of hours. It looked rather clean after that.

Hope the rest of the week is good for you.

Back from little trip. Three days and a bit more than a thousand k's.

First day went down to visit Grandkids and have some Corona's with my Son. He's busy budgeting bloody toilet paper because of the stupid shortages in the south east.

Day two was my 'highway to heaven' bucket list trek. It was over four hours of riding but not a really long ride in terms of kilometres.

attachment.php

My Son rode with me to D'aguilar and then I went up over Mt Mee past a speed camera and a breatho test and down into Dayboro and Samford.

attachment.php

From Samford I followed the Mt Glorious road up into the fog. It's a beautiful route and one that has claimed many boy racer's lives. After driving it i understand that better. The corners just beg to be ridden hard but the surface can be treacherous. If you combine over-confidence, adrenaline, diesel spills, wet surfaces and lots of leaves on the road it's a perfect recipe for an off. Still a lot of fun once it dried up a bit. Had a coffee at the iconic cafe, stretched my legs, talked to some friendly fellow riders and waited for the fog to clear a little.

attachment.php

Then it was down the mountain to Esk and up to Hampton past Ravensbourne National Park. Another idyllic ride.

attachment.php

To my final destination which was to locate my Mum's grave at the garden cemetary, lay some flowers and have a scotch with her.

attachment.php

All in all a great trip, even with the couple of 'moments' when the slippery road made me feel like i was gonna meet Mum personally. My shoulders are sore and my neck tells me I'm not as young as i used to be.

Now off to a favourite fishing spot with the wifey and the boat for a dirty (fingers crossed) weekend.
