Afternoon all

Just popping in to wish all the Aussie members both past and present a great new year

Hey Webbo,

Good to see you're still around. Hope all is good with you and that the new year is a better one.

No doubt there will be people out there doing things and saying it's the last time for the year and the decade they are going to do that thing. Then saying a couple of days later. Well it's the first time in the decade that they've done that thing. So all the twits on twitter will be going nuts.

Well it's hot everywhere. Waiting for the cool change later in the day in Melbourne town. Till then hunkering down inside. Has been a warm few days. Was going to do stuff outside but then a cold drink watching the cricket was a better option. Even sorted out some clothes to go the charities now that the weight loss has made those clothes too big to wear.

Smoko keeps screwing up. Only giving compensation to firefighters in a Liberal state was not a smart thing, but then he is a party man so it was done deliberately to snub Labor states. Plus his massive ego means he can never admit he gets things wrong. Starting off an apology with .." I apologise if you were offended..." is pure fucking arrogance. Now Gladys is trying to smooth the issue out. SA is the latest state to be included, so no surprise that it's a Lib state. Fire fighters from other states who have been helping their colleagues in NSW will be pissed off.

Fires in Victoria has caused the evacuation of major holiday areas on both sides of the state. Lorne is a beach holiday town on the west coast that relies on the Summer tourists. The Falls Festival has been cancelled and the place has been evacuated. Fires have been around Lorne before. There are pics of people in the water at Lorne watching the fires approaching while ash fell on them. East Gippsland has also been evacuated which is another Summer tourist area. It's about 4hrs from Melbourne on the east coast. So 30,000 people have been told to evacuate.

As for the fireworks well it will be cool here in Melbourne on New Year's Day so may be people in Sydney can watch our fireworks on the Yarra River. Lots of talk of the fireworks in Sydney being cancelled. Which won't happen since it means dollars, and dollars come before people's lives as we've seen. Can still party and get drunk without the fireworks. Besides after the fireworks it kinda leaves you flat.

Still having issues with the PC but as you can tell, it still works. It's kinda weird though. The startup fails with the keyboard plugged in, but works with the keyboard unplugged on startup, but then when I plug in the keyboard after startup, it's all good. Beyond my technical knowledge of IT stuff but found a work around. Cheaper than a new PC but reckon I'll need a new one soon.

Got my drinks ready for new year's. Got some more booze as a Christmas present so I'm stocked up. Expecting some rain tomorrow so New Year's Eve will start of as a wet one so another in door day.

Hope everyone is staying safe where ever you are. See you next year!

Downright cool over this side after most of the month hot. It even rained for 10 mins last night, unheard of. Some challenging waves with the southwesters for the kids on their new surf toys, but it's crab season now so they will all be down as families trying to catch a feed of crabs at Mandurah. The usual suspects will make the news for catching way too many and/or females then look blank faced at the cameras for getting caught out.
Heading off to Margaret River later in the week then to the house on the south coast. I might buy half of a property in MR from a cousin and build something small there to escape to from time to time. More likely his parents will go and stay there while they are having babies over the next few years, but we can call it however we want. His folks are only 10 years older than me so we have always been a bit more older/younger sister than aunt/niece.

sfc /scannow in admin command window to repair your PC OS installation. Then reinstall the keyboard driver. Your PC thinks your keyboard is a USB drive and wants to boot off that. Had a laptop that went rogue like that, and something happened in an update about a month ago that caused boot up issues with half of the office desktops. The IT guys just did an sfc run.

Happy New Year for 2020 :)

Resolutions? I say we've all being doing them wrong...
The idea is to make a resolution you can't possibly break!!!
For example, I am giving up skydiving.
I will feel like a success all damn year because I have zero intention of breaking this one :D

Thanks for the info on the keyboard. As you mentioned I things went wrong after the latest update from Win 10. Thought the keyboard was the reason it wasn't starting up automatically. Was going to simply buy a Win 10 keyboard but will try to download the keyboard driver. Did the reset on the OS but it wiped my older software. Still doing some weird stuff like not seeing me as an admin for older software I want to remove. Not a big issue.

Have a similar relationship with one of my nephews. He is only 7 years younger than me. Him calling me uncle in public would make me look rather old so I killed off that idea once he got into his adult years. He recently turned 50.

Good luck with the house hunting. Will be doing something similar once I sell up my current place. Will be looking for a holiday home down the coast. Hope the start of the year is a good one for you. :rose:

Well it's 2020. A happy new year for some, not so happy for others. Didn't manage to finish off the bottle of bubbly this year. Just felt rather tired so didn't last too long after midnight. Hope the start of the year is good for everyone even those that survived the fires. Being alive is good even if you've lost everything. They just need good support now.

The smoke from all the fires has made its way to Dunedin on the east coast of NZ which just shows the massive impact of these fires. Mallacoota looks a lot like King Lake looked after those fires. Only been to Mallacoota (6-7 hrs from Melbourne) once and there is only one way in and out so those people are truly cut off. Now having to helicopter fire fighters out and in plus the Army and Navy being called up. Getting tourists out might be ok but not their vehicles. Sale does have an Air Force base about a couple of hours from Mallacoota.

As for the fireworks I don't get how during a total fire ban that businesses can get exemptions but the quiet Aussie with his backyard BBQ isn't allowed to light it up. It's either a fire ban or it isn't. So in future register yourself as a business and you can apply for an exemption.

Had a lazy day getting in contact with people for the new year. Even with all this technology people still don't answer their phones. Yep don't tell me, answering a phone is so 2019 and besides I'm busy like doing stuff. OMG like did you see that like post of that food OMG!!

A new year, still same wankers. May the bluebird of happiness shit on your enemies. Don't have any enemies...just wait a while they'll find you.

Evening all,

Had to drive thru the city today and it has been shrouded in smoke all day. It's coming from those fires in the extreme east of the state over 6hrs away. Thanks to those north easterly winds, which we almost never get, it's blowing the smoke from that far away. Has been a warm day, one more to follow then hopefully a southerly will blow thru early Sunday.

Saw some crazy people jogging with masks on. Really people, get a grip.

Smoko got to hear from those quiet Australians impacted by the fires. He discovered they aren't that silent. He just seemed to be nonplused. Had nothing to say. That's the way to show leadership, just ignore people in need. The Vic Premier has shown more leadership than the dude running the country.

Well it didn't take long for humanity to show it doesn't give a fig about anyone. Had a person decide to muck around with my bin so they could park closer to where they were visiting. So I put an appropriate note on their windscreen. I've never done that before, but I'm frankly fed up with stupid people. Confrontation seems the only thing they listen to. The note did the trick as that person when leaving returned and parked somewhere else.

If people don't have any common sense, then I'm quite willing to teach them the hard way. The parking issues in the street have got worse with more people in the street and their visitors. I have no doubt there will be further incidents. My plan to leave the area has been reinforced. It used to be a nice quiet place to live, now it's becoming a zoo. The western suburbs have moved to my street in the SE. There are too many dwellings in this small street and the population has become rather transient as most people renting can't afford to live here more than 1-2 yrs therefore they don't have any investment in the neighbourhood so can just cause havoc then move on.

On a happier note, I purchased the Walking Dead box set yesterday. Had to laugh that the computer on the checkout died. Mentioned that to the person on the checkout that the year is only a couple of days old and things have gone wrong already. She did laugh.

Seems my sun blind on the kitchen window is just about cactus. Tried to repair the busted arm but it's not holding. So once the Summer is done, I'll rip it down and won't replace it since I'm hoping to sell up at the end of the year.

Hoping for rain and a southerly before the weekend is over to blow all this smoke away. Hope your weekend is a good one.

Looks like the Kiwi's are down and out already.

I loved the guy from the RFS or whatever , that said I don't want to shake your hand. Scomo still reached in and grabbed his left hand, hit him on the shoulder, then made a quick exit lol. He has 500 Mil going to a schools chaplain idea but only 11 mil to fireys. Needs to get priorites right.

Yep that guy had lost his home whilst fighting the fires to save other people's property so quite rightly he was pissed off at Smoko for not listening back in April last year. Also that pregnant mother refused to shake his hand but he forced her to just for a photo op. She had also lost her home but was asking for more funding for the fire fighters not her own needs, and Smoko just walked away from her. He cannot admit he got it wrong and as seen he cannot and is not willing to talk to people who criticize him. In leadership you have to deal with angry people and find out why they are angry not dismiss them as just an annoyance. Smoko cannot show empathy nor compassion all he knows is to go on the attack on people who don't agree with him. As seen he cannot deal with real people in need.

Afternoon all,

Seems like the Aussies have got this test won. Warner got his ton and Manus knocked up a quick 50. The Kiwis know it's over for them. Kiwis already down 2 wickets and they haven't got 20 runs yet.

Got some wet stuff yesterday and some more today. It's not heavy but at least it has been some soaking stuff not that quick shower stuff which doesn't do any good. Hopefully some of it will get to the fires in the east of the state where it's really needed.

Another smoky day in Melbourne town from the fires. Not planning on going anywhere so not an issue for me. The wisdom seems to be that those paper masks people are wearing are useless against the smoke. You need one with a filter especially if you have any breathing issues.

Amazing to see the response from folks OS with the donations. The govt once again seems to only respond when criticised. Even their latest spend is less than the donations being raised which is just pathetic. $30 million from donations, $11 million from the govt. $5 billion in surplus. WTF! Saw Abetz on the TV criticizing the ex-fire chiefs that somehow because they are no longer in the job they don't have anything to offer. Well someone needs to tell them that Little Johnny has no value since he is an ex-PM. Oh but wait that's different cause he is part of the LNP. Silly me. Well a majority of the voting public voted them into govt so the majority of the voting public has to take a portion of the blame. Don't say you didn't know what they would do.

Might be a new year but the issues from the build next door haven't stopped. Had a word with the dude running it that his plumbers have caused a problem he needed to fix. He was around quick smart on a Sunday morning to fix the issue. He keeps telling me how professional his tradies are, well not by what I've seen. Not surprised that the new housing builds have so many workmanship issues. Quality of workmanship takes a back seat to speed. Wouldn't buy a new house if I can help it. The attitude these days seems to be just build it quick and wait for someone to complain to do the job right. So it's building by complaint not by pride in workmanship.

Not expecting any rain in Melbourne town till the end of the week. The tennis starts in two weeks so anyone coming down for that should take advantage of the local transport system in the city and surrounds. There is also a free tram zone in the city centre so use that. Don't need to walk everywhere is you don't want to.

Started to watch the Game of Thrones DVD's I purchased a few years ago. Got a deal on the 3 season pack. Not quite sure what all the fuss is about. Haven't seen any dragons yet, still on the first season. Prefer the Vikings series as it gets you from the first couple of episodes. Anyway will persist with Game of Thrones since I've already purchased them. Seeing lots of boobies at the moment, so I'm assuming that will continue with the other episodes. Incest also seems to be a theme.

I got several bottles of booze for Christmas and my birthday in a couple of days. Have several chesses to choose from. So I've got lots of sustenance to watch all these DVDs including the Walking Dead series.

For those who remember all the talk about the Y2K bug, well now they are talking about the same thing happening in 2038. It was non-event then and no doubt they will find a solution for something that's forecasted to happen in 18yrs time. I reckon that's enough notice.

Hope your week is good for you. Thoughts for all those still going thru the bush fires which no doubt will continue once the media focus on other things as the year gets older. Those people will be dealing with the aftermath for a number of years. There are people in King Lake who still haven't been able to rebuild their homes due to insurance and govt support. Those fires were back in 2009.

I agree with most of what you said especially the political, this quote below though!

GOT needs at least 6 episodes as it is so politically complex. Like a lot, I wasn't a fan of the last season. I am sure once you get through season 1, things may change up for you.

Nope not feeling it. Most of the way thru season 2, still waiting for the Ah Ha moment. The acting is good just lots of moving parts which seem to be being drawn out a bit. I reckon Peter Dinklage steals the show for the story he is involved with. Can see now why people were raving about him. I still have another season to watch, but I reckon I'll stop there and wait for the other seasons to come in a box set. Having lots of nudity in a series like that doesn't really grab me.

I guess it's like Lord of the Rings some people are really into it whilst others only saw it at the movies due to the hype. I just found The Witcher is a series on NETFLIX. The game is one of the best I've played. I don't have NETFLIX so will see if there are DVD's of that. Not sure if it follows the original story or if Hollywood screws with it.

Evening all,

Just got back from my short trip to Warrnambool. Stayed in a more expensive hotel this time since it was my birthday. Couldn't fault the room and the views from the balcony were excellent. Spent my birthday down at Port Fairy which is about 30 mins further west from Warrnambool. Pretty little town. Found a nice lunch spot by the river and ordered a crayfish lunch which was yummy. Used be able to get that in Warrnambool but the only place that served it closed down several years ago which just sounds silly.

Found a couple of new places to explore in Warrnambool. Found at least one hippy who gave me the inside info on some fresh food markets. Something for next time may be. Lovely place to visit right on the bay with those fresh seas breezes. It looked like tourist numbers were down this year compared to what I experienced a couple of years ago. The number of metered car parks also seems to of increased in town. Revenue raising no doubt.

Coped the high winds yesterday when the cool change came thru the place. Got rained on all day so spent most of the day under cover in a couple of indoor markets. After the rather warm day and previous night the rain and the cold wind felt good, plus being a tourist you've got no choice. Found some local produce and purchased some hippy soap. The combinations sounded like stuff you could eat. Found a place that had actual food so spent part of the day drinking beer watching the rain and wind sweep thru the town.

Went to Cheese World on my way home. Had my usual milkshake which is really nice. The dairy is just across the road so you couldn't get the milk any fresher. Got me several cheeses so I'm good for a while. Lots of red wine in the cupboard from Christmas and birthday presents. Life is good.

Apparently some of the news reporting about the fires has misled tourists into thinking the whole country is on fire, which obviously is not true. Even businesses in Ayres Rock are having tourists cancel bookings due to the fires in NSW which is just crazy. Shows how poorly were inform tourists of how big our country is. Then again if the only adds they see are scenes of the Harbour Bridge then they see fires, I guess you can't blame them. It is going to be a poor season for those businesses that rely on the tourist season to stay viable. Next I'll be hearing tourists cancelling accommodation in Darwin due to fires in Tassie.

Warming up for a few days next week before more rain which is more like normal Summer weather. I'll get the photos sorted in a couple of days and post a couple on here.

Hope the rest of the weekend is good for you. With all that driving and sea air, I'll sleep well tonight.

Slightly warmer weather returning over here for a couple of days. The dipolar has hit zero again after being at record +3 deg only a month and a bit ago. And like magic the cyclone season has cranked up. The first one through put the fires out on the Nullabor, the second one scooting due west across the Kimberley coast might even make it to a Cat 4 before it turns towards the Pilbara coast on Sunday.
Had our usual get together of uni friends who coupled up last night. We had all done undergrad and post grad together way back when. The group history is such that prior to settling with one, our sordid lifestyle was such that everyone has slept with everyone, and sometimes comes out as a laugh over the 9th or 10th bottle of red.
Hangover this morning though, not good.

Well you know they say that some greasy food and a coke will do wonders for a hangover. Haven't had a hangover for many years. I tend to drink myself sober these days.

Afternoon all,

The smoke haze has been around Melbourne for about 3 days now. Drove thru the city yesterday and saw the smoke shroud the tops of the buildings. It was so bad that the major construction site on Spencer St. was shutdown. Saw all those workers leaving the site at about 11am. The people who live in those high rise apartments on the upper floors wouldn't be getting any views from their luxury accommodation.

The smoke is already impacting the tennis before the main event has started. I went out to my car this morning and the smell of smoke was rather thick in the air. Expecting a cool change this afternoon with a southerly so that should blow all that smoke north and east away from the city. Quite unusual for Melbourne to get NE winds. Our northerly winds usually come from the NW or direct from the North. A majority of our weather comes from the left, so for it to come from the right is very odd even for Summer.

The question was asked at the last election by the now govt, what is the cost of all that progressive stuff. Well now everyone is seeing the cost of being non-progressive. Apart from the cost to the animals, the countryside and human life, it's also impacting the financial side by less tourists due to fear of being burnt by fire. A lot of towns and now cities will wear the cost of poor climate change policy. Now that cities are being impacted may be common sense will prevail, but that will only happen if the govt admits they got it wrong and that doesn't seem a possibility with the current mob. So get ready for another 5 yrs of this stuff. Franking credits and tax cuts will do fuck all if you're paying double for groceries and basic thing like bread and milk and you have less to spend on your mortgages. Lets not forget wars have started because people couldn't afford the basics. May be next time the voting public will think more about the larger picture than self interest. As for a Royal Commission well we already know what the cause is and what to do. The money is better spent helping the victims of poor policy.

Any folks coming down for the tennis don't forget the free tram zone in the city. Won't get you to the tennis but does mean you don't have walk around all the shops in the city, especially on those hot days. Don't forget to top up your myki cards for the PT but don't do it online or thru your smart phone. They still haven't worked out how to make those credit top ups instant. Best way is to go to a machine at a station or to the info centres where they sell myki cards. The card used to cost you $10 for the card itself. But with the Labor govt we have now, the card is free, just add money. They last 4 yrs so if you are a regular at the tennis, it's good for a few yrs after your visit.

I've been to Bunnings three times in two days. Got my painting stuff on Monday then had to go to the store on the other side of the city yesterday for stuff for my mum's place but a couple of things were out of stock, so it was back over to my side to purchase those items. All that in the heat and the smoke haze. I so hate Summer. Saw that the temp difference between Melbourne and Warrnambool is 14 degrees today. Could due with some cool breezes at the moment.

Hope the rest of your week is good for you. Don't be a silly person and go running in the smoke haze. It's not worth it. I don't need my taxes paying for your trip to hospital.

Morning all,

What a difference a day makes. Lots of rain in Melbourne town since Wednesday and has cooled the place down nicely. Had to break out the warmer clothes yesterday. More rain coming on Sunday and for the start of the tennis we are expecting lots of rain and thunderstorms so expecting delays in the tennis on the outside courts.

Who knew that the LNP liked pork that much and they like it in barrels. So people in non-LNP regions need to get more pork on their forks. No doubt when these respective sporting clubs play each other it may lead to some tense situations on and off the field. Now that's the way to govern the country. Pitting respective councils against each other based on the electorate. Seems we are no different to having those corrupt govt's we see on the news from OS. No wonder we attract the type of politicians we do to these jobs. The stupid part is people keep voting them back into power. Says a lot about us.

Hopefully some of the rain coming our way in the next few days will make it to the eastern part of Vic to those fire grounds. Little to none of the rain we got in Melbourne made it to eastern Vic.

Well I finished the first 3 seasons of Game of Thrones. My verdict is that I will buy the other seasons but not in any rush. It's taken 3 seasons of it to get interesting. If I only saw the first season I wouldn't of bothered to purchase any others. Currently looking at The Walking Dead series. Hasn't lost any of the drama revisiting the seasons I've already seen.

Hope your weekend is good for you. I'll be doing prep work for my first painting task. The rain will make things interesting.

"drink myself sober"
Sometimes on Lit you see posts that need more information, this is one of them, DarkElf. Types of drinks? Can you mix drinks? Is there a time frame?

There are two main problems with Bunnings is that they have devoured almost all competition so you're railroaded into shopping there, with the false promise of them beating prices for the same item elsewhere by 10%, but their exclusivity contracts knock out the availability of their stocked items being sold through any other hardware stores. The other is their stock control. It's frustrating having to go to multiple stores, some distances apart, to fulfill a list for particular tasks. Which is where their website is actually useful. You can check stock availability, so even if you know you can't get everything in one store, you at least know which stores to go to so you don't get wasted trips.

The rain was wonderful, good soaking rain, but I would have swapped it to dampen the fire zones over our lawns and had it fall further east. Still, nice to see a bit of green around and the air clear again.

No clear air around Bridget McKenzie, the pork barreling to LNP electorates for sporting grants stinks to high heaven and, like Morrison, she just doesn't see the problem. While the AG report claims that no laws necessarily had been broken, it notes that the legal basis on which decisions were made to over-ride independent recommendations to distribute the cash from the grant scheme was not evident. Isn't that theft, then, or at the least, fraud on the public if not the public purse?
Who says we don't need a National Integrity Commission?

Who says we don't need a National Integrity Commission?

I’m sure she sees the problem. In the era of Trump however she can see even more clearly that flagrant denial of blatant truth allows those with a neck made of brass to sail on with impunity.

Yes ma'am you can mix drinks, just don't switch them with water. The trick is keep dinking the booze put pace it out. Binge drinking doesn't work if you want to last the distant. I find the harder stuff like bourbon, etc is better. Beer is ok but with beer you get that well known regular need to pee every half hour after you drink a lot of it. Everyone of course has their own tipping point. Since I prefer the harder stuff it can get quite expensive which is where a good barkeep comes in handy. Had a lot of bars shut down on me over the years even in places you'd reckon that would be party towns. Also helps that I'm on the bigger side so takes a lot to put me down.

Yep Bunnings is different depending on which side of town you live. Their website was actually useless in my case. I even asked the person on the desk and she looked up the same website and told me there was stock. So I asked her to help me find it, only to discover there wasn't any. The Bunnings close to where I live is pretty good at keeping up their stock levels. Given that we live in this land of smart tech, it's totally useless if the humans in charge don't keep things up to date.

I saw that the logging industry want to help with the bushfires, however their angle is to do more logging, they just don't call it that. Apparently the issue is not climate change, it's too many trees. They even put out a brochure showing their solution. How dumb do they think people are? Well ok the LNP may buy it cause right now they will grasp at any life line. Trouble is they keep grabbing anchors rather than floatation devices. Like I said we have another 5 yrs of this insanity since the fuckwits in charge have a decent majority.
