Aussies! Check in here!

Wasn't the census a spectacular balls up? Denial of Service, only from a government authority!

Just imagine if we had the proper NBN, we might have been able to send our data much more efficiently and avoided the overload. Maybe we should have reverted to the old petrol shortage order and had odd numbered houses submit at one time, even at another, everyone else as they could manage.

I can't see how the data collected won't be forever tainted and need a disclaimer about the collection failure and the privacy issues. Bet the ABS head is really earning his huge salary this week.

Some light on the mess:

Well now seems we are all talking about the lack of forethought by the govt once again. As mentioned in a previous post, the ABS website failure was a sure thing. IT systems promising a lot and not delivering, we should not be surprised. Also given the govt has basically got rid of any in-house IT and expertise as well, they are at the mercy of private contractors.

My plan was to get it done early so I was ok. The $100 mil the govt allegedly saved will now be spent fixing the screw up. They should of firstly informed people about the new method the month before then selected a smaller percentage of people to engage with the on-line method or spread it out over a couple of days. Given the ABS already indicated there would be issues they should have come up with a solution that would work rather than the chaos we now have.

Needless to say we continue to lose faith in the Turnbull govt to get anything right.

Maybe the reason the denial of service happened was that too many Aussies were trying to post multiple times. Has Australia got broadband yet or still on dialups?

yes of course we have broadband...but the Libs don't want to pay for a proper broadband, we got the cereal pkt version great for sending small emails and tweets, fucking useless for any other purpose. As one Aussie politician put it..."you only need the internet for emails"

But then since you're in China I guess you can only see what the Chinese govt wants you to see so no issues there obviously.

Still waiting for the NBN in my area but given the various versions of that technology I'm not expecting a lot. The NBN wouldn't of made much difference since the receiving end of the process couldn't handle the volume. Like trying to make sausages thru the eye of a needle...don't work. Now if they gave us all pigeons that's a different story :D

Congrats to the Aussies winning more medals today. The high school student winning gold, came out of nowhere. His name wasn't even mentioned in the lead up to the race as a possible medalist. And the women stepped up once again with a silver.

Hopefully women's sport will now get some proper backing in this country. The women are showing the guys how to do it so they need more support.

Sleeping patterns all over the place at the moment due to the odd hours of when the various events are on. Apparently the swimming finals are running later to please the US audience, some dollars obviously changed hands no doubt.

Another week of sleep deprivation to go. Go Aussies!

No issues at all. I see pretty much what I want to see when I want and broadband speed is incredible all the time.
Obviously I have no problem entering Literotica.

Do I want to access Facebook etc? Nope, not interested.
Besides, aren't all govt's everywhere, even Australia, interested in where their netizens go?

Finally got the census done - 5-30am and it took about 8 minutes.
And seriously? They're going to release my data in 99 years?

How will anyone know it's your data? Although is it true you had to link your name to the information you provided?

Oh - I'm not worried about it.
That was sarcasm (although not readily apparent) because of all the hoo-hah everyone was making about it! :D

That census, what a load of crap. What's the point?
Most of the information requested could be obtained from the tax office

one of my kids works as a hockey coach. The answer to Good and Services produced....Goals

On a brighter note, I'm loving the ABC on Wednesday nights. Gruen, The Katering Show, Soul Mates

Data collated by 2016 census so far....
Australia is a country of 4 million inhabitants

Sunday, and I am babysitting my youngest gradbaby today. Fun times!
She's just become independent enough to want to eat by herself using her hands.... I can see today being all about cleaning up mess!
On the brightside - it's a legitimate excuse to spend a lazy day :)

Well that's excellent never know what you've not got if you never had it.

Yep govt's can find out but not all police what their citizens do and say. All people want basic freedoms even in countries that restrict opinions than again if you sing the party's song life is beautiful.

Well done WQ it took me 15 mins on the night but then again it did get in early on purpose cause there was bound to be problems.

Isn't it good that in 99yrs you're lineage will be able to trace their ancestry and get ripped off just like now.

Afternoon all,

Well the Olympics in Rio, if nothing else it's an example of what not to do. The athletes have had to put up with a lot if it not the weather, the infrastructure is trying to kill them. The Rio Olympics committee must be crossing its fingers that they get thru to the closing ceremony without things falling to pieces. The lack of attendance has been quite visible, then again most locals can't afford the price of a ticket.

The Aussies continue to try hard but it obviously hasn't been our best outcome. All we ask is that they do their best, if its not your day then you can't do much about it.

The weather is all over the place it seems not only here but also in Rio. Quite warm in Melbourne town for most of this week only really raining today. Been busy with doing stuff for most of the week.

Going to try multifocal lenses for the first time, will see how that goes. The cost of eye wear has certainly turned around. Used to be that the spec frames were the higher cost, now it's the lenses. They might as well give you the frames for free.

The seasons are definitely changing. Starting to get the late Winter / early Spring flowers coming up in the garden. Hope everyone has an easy weekend.

Good luck with the multifocals, elf!
I tried several times to wear them, but they made me nauseous and dizzy, even after several weeks trying. So I have to have 2 sets of glasses instead.

Would you believe I heard someone whistling 'Click Go the Shears' as I sat on my balcony this morning drinking my coffee? I did a double take! Yep, I listened closely; unmistakeable.

Remarkable. Not just the choice of tune within your earshot but to hear anyone whistling, tunefully enough to recognise the song. I do like hearing a robust or soulful whistle, but then I am very aurally attuned.

As for the performance of the Australians at Rio, maybe it was less than expected but better than our cricket team...

Hey WQ,

Thankfully I don't really need specs for reading its more to help transitioning from reading something close to far. I usually take my specs off to read up close. A little annoying if you're reading a map in the car. If I don't like the multifocals I can get my money back and stick with the single lens. Either way I've kept the current ones I've got. Went with a different frame this time. The full frame is back in vogue. All those celebs wearing them has made it cool to wear full frames again.

Afternoon all,

Watched the closing ceremony of the Olympics this morning and thankfully channel 7 didn't give us another misdirection like it did with the opening ceremony, telling us it was on at 6am but actually starting at 9am. Then again it was a sign of the Rio Olympics overall. People not happy about a lot stuff and what the hell was up with the officials denying athletes entry to sporting events.

Lots of colour and movement at the closing ceremony and obviously Rio turned it on so good on them. The section where the athletes were walking out went on for about 30 mins, gives one enough time to get a cuppa or wash the car and the cat or preferably wash the car using the cat. "Honey why is the cat shiny?"

Like here in Melbourne town it was raining right thru the ceremony but at least it would of been warm rain, but it is a tropical climate so not surprised it has rained a bit during the games. Lots of silver for us so not doubt good for our chances in Brisvegas for the Comm Games.

How good is Usain Bolt! There was him, daylight then the rest of the field, wow.

Next the Para Olympics. On the positive side Rio has time to fix the stuff that went wrong during the last two weeks. For local crime they get two bites of the cherry. Not sure what the value of extra troops on the streets is to general safety over there.

May be its just me, but August feels like a long month then again it could be the lack of sleep.

Afternoon all,

... what the hell was up with the officials denying athletes entry to sporting events.

.

I think it was to do with athletes who "arrived at venues with accreditations (for tickets) with a different access code to their own" according to Kitty Chiller.

Ticket tampering in other words. The athletes knew they were using tampered accreditations.

Nine athletes have been detained and will fly out tomorrow after their fines have been paid and their passports returned. Public holiday in Rio; the offices are closed.

However...congratulations to Aussie golfer Curtis Luck winning the US Amateur Championship.

I was actually shocked...no athletes were gunned down, or anything like that. Given that there were gun battles shortly before the Olympics, the authorities have either done a very good protection effort or just been incredibly lucky.

Well given that most of them were locked in at night...

I am surprised there were no terrorist attacks.

So.... things have been very quiet here lately.
I recently started on new medication, which has me feeling nauseous, no appetite, constant headache and tinnitus. The rheumatologist assures me all this will settle down once I reach the therapeutic level I need....
Only good thing so far has been the weight loss (because of the nausea and loss of appetite) I have lost 7kg in three weeks!
Not the best way to get rid of those last few stubborn kilos.

The kicker? I'll be on this (or similar) for the rest of my life.

Ok, now for some better news.....
Early October, I'll be in Sydney for a few days either side of Bathurst weekend :)
If anyone wants to catch up, let me know via pm ....
