Aussies! Check in here!

Afternoon all,

Well its a public holiday today in Melbourne which you won't find on any calendar, why you ask well it was an election promise and they kept their promise...we're kinda in shock. The AFL Grand Finale Parade is on today as per normal but now its a public holiday. It was an excuse to leave the office and wonder into the CBD for lunch. Not sure this public holiday thing will take off for this event. More practical to have it on the Monday like in Sydney. Anyways its a day off for those employed.

Went to the Royal Melbourne Show last week and well... couldn't find the animals, well not easily. They also have gotten rid of the smells. Previously you could smell food, and popcorn and they had those fairy floss machines....all gone. Now its a food and wine tasting event with some showbags and rides and some animals pushed towards the back out of sight. They even got rid of the large food displays. They still have the beehive display, didn't see any coloured chicks, that was always a hit with the kids. I did however wander into the place they have Masterchef. Even saw Adriano Zumbo sitting with his mates on a break. The Masterchef building is smaller than it is on TV. A trick of the lens no doubt. Was underwhelmed. Didn't know they filmed it at the showgrounds, so learned something new.

As an Aussie living in the US, I just wanted to be surrounded by like minded individuals here who get what its like to live I'm a culture not dictated by gun violence.
I'm fucking fed up. Over it. This country is diseased and filled with self absorbed pricks who care more about their toys than their neighbors. The country, as a whole, is obviously not fed up enough to do anything about this problem. I am not interested in debating the merits of gun control. A hypothetical bad dude is not an argument that settles well with me. A dramatic shift in conciousness is needed. Like, I dunno, .... Australia?!?!
Fuck this place. They won't get my taxes for much longer. I'm coming home. I'll battle the Sydney house prices and go to school without fear of getting shot. I guess that's worth $500k, right?

Come home, I'm sure you'll find someone to hold you at night and comfort you. If you struggle, call me. I like geeks :rose:

Thought I might drop in, I like our East Island cousins, especially as I spend so much time there with business. What I find interesting is there are more coup's in Australia than in Fiji. Hopefully we will see some cheap holiday deals soon!

Hey AG,

Well its not the entire country just those lobbyists and what will it take for the US to be brave enough for getting a handle on gun control... ordinary people thru their respective elected pollies. Apathy is a big problem until it happens to them. Whilst I haven't lived in the States I have travelled thru a lot of it and its very stark in its contrasts and the culture hits you in the face. I still can't get over the rah rah crap over there. Its like they need to do it to keep up self-worth. But having said that I've met a lot of nice people over there.

Hey if you're coming back to Aus then you might consider Melbourne. Apparently its growing at a faster rate than any other city in the land and house prices are kinda affordable depending on where you want to live. And we have the best restaurants and coffee shops...did I the mention the shopping. We also do sporting events really well. Also easier to drive around the place than Sydney which should really start again with their roads, somebody lonely for London fucked that up at the start.

I've had several friends come back home after living OS for work reasons. Like coming home to sleep in your own bed. Did I mention I give pretty good hugs...so I'm told.

Afternoon all,

Well its Friday and I've discovered the desk calendar I purchased from a charity has all the dates wrong for this month. Its out by 1 day so according to the calendar I see in front of me today is the 10th of Oct. Checking next month's I've seen they've got that one right. Well I guess at least I can look at the pretty picture..hand painted.

Nice sunny day in Melbourne town and the wind has died off too so the ladies can wear those nice summer dresses without fear of them flying up revealing the support structure keeping everything tucked in and smooth.

Thankfully the school holidays are over so one can safely venture forth to a shopping centre without tripping over those noise makers, yes well there is still the old people to fight for a seat at the coffee spots, but they don't move that quickly. Almost time for the peak video game season. The early Spring flowers are gone from my garden so a mowing we will go. And let us not forget its daylight fucking savings time again.

Tried that new blend of Jack and cider called Winter Jack, well I reckon Jack can keep it and bury it in an ice cave. Its beer time again with this warmer weather.

Congratulations WQ on the new addition to your family - hope everyone is thriving, if not sleeping?

The last few posts prompted me to reminisce a little about life in Australia:

1) Wearing treads and Amco flares sitting on the couch watching the cricket with dad
2) Getting sunburnt at the beach covered in coconut Reef oil....god I still love that smell!!
3) Going to the Milk Bar and getting 20 cents of mixed lollies.....and having them last all Saturday night watching TV
4) Burning all our household rubbish in the backyard incinerator

I remember the backyard incinerator!
and dragster bikes, with the long seat and loopy chrome backrest
and cricketers that wore all white, with floppy wide terry-towelling hats, and pulling on the terry-towelling wrist-bands to play tennis!
Terry-towelling - those were the days lol

Come back Aussiecheekygal - theres so much random shit going on you can't even be safe minding your own business. Toddlers killed by random driveby bullets! I've had to take a rental car back to Washington DC airport with a couple of bullet-holes in it that appeared overnight. Crazy country.

.....

.....

...and its back to the beach, for some perving and some prancing. Pulled all the winter leaves out of the swimming pool and made it all blue and sparkly again - summer is back!

I have finally thrown myself back out into the dating world....
Only to find the rules have changed :(

Hi, fellow Australians! I have been on Lit for a while, and lurked in this thread but have never said hello before until now. So, hello :) I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Hey coffee. I am a bit like you. Been on Lit for awhile but have never really seen this thread before. So hello to all my fellow Aussies here. Isn't it fun to be in the Sun while the US is starting to chill down. Although this summer looks like it is going to be an absolute stinker.

Hi, AW. I am immeasurably glad that winter is over and we're finally getting warmer weather. I abhor the cold, and this winter felt even colder than usual. It really lifts the spirits to have some sunshine!

Yeah it was a little cold and nippy but not too bad where I am. If you don't mind me asking, what part of this wide land are you from?

I travel to the middle quite a bit as I am a miner so I tend to see the sun a bit more than most and winters just aren't as harsh for me and I live in SA, the driest state (Yes you wouldn't think it but we are).

Morning my little Aussie lurkers. :)

Winter, as usual for up here, was briefly beautiful weather that didn't linger anywhere near long enough. I'm already eyeing off the aircon remote and missing my pool.

Not in Queensland then... :D Though it did seem cool here for a little longer than last year... but I'm an interloper and know little of what is 'normal'!

Jumped into the pool this weekend for the first swim of summer - looking forward to a weekend or two lazing around with a newspaper and a girlfriend...

See my av?
<<<<<<------
That is what I really look like! :D

Sailing the world on a 57' ketch sounds like a dream.... until you remember getting caught below the roaring forties, pitch-poling twice and rolling 8 times over 48 hrs in stormy seas breaking at twice the height of the main mast and surfing before the wind at 8 knots under bare poles with two drogues out!
Not all fun and suntanning.

What are you sailing on?

WQ... I stumbled upon this and realise I never responded!

So, 18 months late... Mostly a little 6m 50 trailer sailer on Moreton Bay. Occasional trips further afield on a 42 footer. Sailing is fun all year around up here!

I'd rather not be too specific, but as Zach noted, it's not Queensland! You're lucky you don't have to suffer the brunt of the brutal Australian cold :D

I wish! I need the type of job where I can just work from wherever, so I can move to Queensland every winter :D
