Our current Prime Minister has called out her party! She has demanded a leadership ballot for 7pm tonight, with the proviso that the loser resign from politics.
Our former PM, Kevin Rudd, is about to make a statement in response to Gillard.

For the first time in a year, politics has grabbed my interest again :D

This has me face palming and groaning. I honestly believe if the media didn't keep going on about the leadership issues the labor party have had this bs would not keep coming up. It's ridiculous! Especially since I'd rather not see Tony Abbott in power.

He's doing it!
Now to see if he has the balls to accept the proviso of resignation.

Edit: he has.

I am glued to my screen.

Oh - and if Abbott wins, I am moving to Vanuatu ;)

I'm running sandpaper over my cock end thinking about the ballot result. Looks like iTunes for my drive to work tonight. Might even put my phone on vibrate , text everyone in my contacts to " call me " and place it in my boxers.

Wait. . .I thought our system was fucked up and had heard pretty glowing things about the Aussie system. Run off ballots, day off to vote and the like. Now you're telling me that Aussie Politics works on WWE rules where you just get to challenge someone to a loser leaves the government match at the drop of a hat? I hope you guys get some of the other PPV events, invite me down when they do the Royal Rumble or Money in the Bank.

I think he's probably doing it just to have the argument done and over with. I must admit I'm not watching anything about it at the moment.

Sean, we have to vote on the weekend and challenging the leader of your party is not really that common.

Clearly it's legal and can happen though. In America it's not like Hillary Clinton can walk up to Obama and shout.

"Hillary 3:16 says I just kicked your ass and that's the bottom line cus Clint-Ton said so!" Chug a can of beer and walk out the undisputed champion of the the US government.

We don't vote on weekends, we vote Tuesdays most often. Which is a bitch for anybody who doesn't work where they live. Sure in theory we can't be stopped from taking time off for it, in practice. . .very few people are secure enough to test it.

This leadership issue has to be resolved. Otherwise, all the attention will stay focused on it and Abbott would cruise without facing any real questions about policy. Regardless, I think the gig is up for Labour. Rudd will only make it a little closer.

Ladder Match! I call it.

I still think it's only an issue because the media won't let go of it.
There are a lot of people that think Abbott is a shoe in but I also know a few people that have been staunch liberal supporters in the past that don't want to see Abbott in charge.

You can't just waltz in and change leadership.
Our system works like this.... the people vote for the party. The party members we vote for, in turn vote for the leader of that party (most often before the Federal election, but because we are a democracy they can also vote during a sitting Governments term, as is happening today).

Agree totally.
Let's put the blame squarely where it should be - with the media and their insatiable need for soundbites.

Sadly, I believe both Rudd and Gillard have no chance.
Get ready to go backwards - Australia under Abbott is fucked.

Gillard has said no one has actually challenged her, so it is certainly the media. Wankers! Murdoch wants Abbott in so anything that makes the labor party look bad is good. So bloody annoying.

No it hasnt, they both wont fuckff and die, so I'm watching the goodies, cause they canned the simpsons for a 'special'

It's ok.... if Abbott wins in September you won't have to worry about having a job to go to :D

It looks like Kevin Rudd has the numbers now that Shorton has gone over.

It's Labour's best chance. Julia acts like a 'deer in the head lamps." She doesn't know what to do. When I was in Oz last week the TV played a clip of the radio interview in WA where her partner was accussed of being gay. Julia did nothing with the attack. A good politician would have slammed it back into the deep court. Her timidity is ridiculous!

See, I saw that differently.
To me it looked like she remained dignified in the face of an incredibly stupid and disrespectful question.

Do you believe that any MALE Prime Minister will ever be asked if his partner is a lesbian???

In 1988 Mike Dukakis (Dem Presidential Nominee) was asked a 'what if' sort of question about his wife being raped. He, too, remained dignified. It was a disaster for him. People expect other people to stand up for themselves when insulted, etc,. It looks really weird when politicians don't.

As for your direct question? IF the politician is perceived as 'weak', hell yes. They will be asked these sorts of questions regardless of gender.

It is Julia's timidity that led to a question like that.

In other words, Maggie Thatcher would never have been asked that.;)

So our first female prime minister is no longer prime minister.

The trouble with Gillard is that she's always been a politician first, and a woman second.
I'm not unhappy with this outcome, because as of right now Abbott's job has just become harder.
ANYTHING to stop Abbott!

From a gambler's perspective, I still like the odds on Abbott. As you Aussies say, I am going to have a decent punt on it too.:)

Bring on the barramundi!
