If you are from Georgia, or at least know the state well, I need your help.

I am working on a story in which the female lead comes from Georgia and seeing as I have only driven through your state once or twice, I want to make sure I do not make any geographic errors.

The story takes place in the present and our young lady is to have grown up on a farm somewhere in the peach state. Right now, I am using Augusta as her hometown, so my questions are these:

1) Are there farms in Augusta? I only chose Augusta because I am a big Masters fan.

2) If there are not farms in Augusta, what is a good hometown for my character? I do not want it to be too rural.

3) Besides peanuts, what is a big crop that is grown in Georgia?

4) Any good Georgian surnames? Her first name is Liberty.

Any other little Georgian nuggets would also be appreciated!

Your southern hospitality and assistance will be rewarded with my undying Yankee gratitude and thanks. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

You little perfecitonist, you! ;)

I'm sorry I can't help you. Now if you ever decide to do a story from down under, give a cooee... ok?

Good luck with your new story. :)

Ever Hear of An Atlas?

Well, first things first.

No, there are no farms IN Augusta. However, there are probably lots of farms AROUND Augusta. Macon could be a better site for your story. Most of central to southern Georgia is still largely agricultural. Besides Peaches <and surprisingly, California grows more peaches than Georgia now, but that's like the "best orange" debate>, Georgia is known for peanuts, cotton, the literally world famous Vidalia Onion, tobacco, corn, and soybeans.

If your heorine's name is "Liberty," she's probably a transplant from up north. In some parts of rural Georgia, the fact that the Confederacy LOST the civil war is still big news, and a hotly debated (not to mention volatile) topic. Davis, Lee, Jackson, Cobb or Merrieweather would all make suitable surnames. (Regretably, O'Hara and Butler have already been used.)

By the way, too keep your story from descending into Dukes of Hazard stereotypes, most southerners do wear shoes, know how to read, and some of us even have interests other than Nascar Racing and cow-tipping (and if you don't know what THAT is, don't ask me, thank you very much).

Best of luck with your story. And thanks for asking.

A Georgian by birth <one of the two or three left>.

A Short Post-Script

In some parts of our fair state, it is still inconsiderate of Yankees to go about striking matches indiscrimenantly. Last time that happened. . .

Well, never mind.

;)

Thank you.
