....this is a serious matter. I have heard on Discovery Health, and I wanted to get your feedback, that you have a lower threshold on alcohol and tobacco addiction than us men. Just thought that I should relate that info and warn you to be careful. Drinking is fun. Alcoholism isn't. So drink responsibly. And you really should consider quitting the nicotine thing. We want to keep you babes around a bit longer. You would be missed. I say this with affection, not to be preachy.

Sincerely,

Both my parents were smokers, though they both gave it up when I was a child. I've no doubt at all, however, that my mother, who suffered from heart problems, would have done better if she'd never smoked. She undoubtedly would have still had health problems, but I think they peaked sooner and were worse because of her smoking.

I shudder to think how much worse it would have been if she'd also been a drinker.

My grandmother smoked 3 packs a day for 40 or so years. She doesn't smoke anymore, because she is on oxygen.

That may be true, but you can't look at anything in isolation.

All but two of my siblings smoke, those two are my sisters.

My father was an alcoholic - I rarely drink, and my sister never does.

My brother is a heroin addict. None of the rest of us have that problem.

All things being exactly equal, maybe, but that's not ever the case.
