that you may be competing against needs your help do you still help them? Does it depend on the circumstances or are you going to be altruistic and help a person who needs you?

This is actually a philosphical and moral question...

I'm sure you can think of situations where this may be applicable...I was just playing a game and since net rules are different than what I"m used to asked the group a question and no one would tell me...

It was a simple question about the rules of bidding but they actually tried to deceive me...this reminded me of 5 classifications that I read somewhere....

It was comparing different degrees of altruism and selfishness...I can't remember them all...or even the exact levels but it was similar to...

Altruism (5)-when offering assistance when it harms you
Forget (4)-when offering assistance slightly harms you
Forget (3)-When offering assistance will be equally beneficial
Forget (2)-When offering assistance will be slightly more beneficial to the other person
Forget (1)-When offering assistance will be much more beneficial to the other person

Which of these numbers would you typically offer help?

interesting question

I'm a huge fan of competition and sports. Howeve,r in your situation, I think it would be totally fair and just to tell you, so that you were informed of the rules, so that you were at least able to compete on the same level using the available information.

I can also think of a lot of instances where you don't help some one during competition. More often than not though, you help them I think.

You sound like you would at least comply to 1, 2, and 3....

What about in the workplace? If you were training a person who one day may compete with you for a job? Would you still offer to do it competently?

My mind is in a total spin

That's the philosophical part...some would say that none is more healthy than the other just that they each represent the different individual's morals....

It's not really a spectrum (I thought it was too at first) it's more like a checklist...1 being the situation that harms you the least but also the one that benefits someone else the most...it all depends if you think that helping someone hurts you and if so would you still offer to help them...

I'll help anyone I compete against, I believe in things happening for a reason. If I get a promotion over another, it was meant to be! :D
