I've been working on a book project that is now nearing completion and am ready to begin contacting literary agents or publishers. So, my question is:

Are there any of you who have done this successfully and would you share your experience with me? Thanks.

Hey "Wayne" welcome aboard.

You may want to do two things here.

One remove the e-mail address from your post itss against forum rules.

Second enable your private messaging as a lot of times people answer questions like this that way rather than "publicly"

Do a test market run with your stories here on Lit. See what you get in the way of feedback. You may be surprised at the intelligence of some of the contents, and even more so at the stupidity of others. Still, it's a good starting point.

Then, look for publishers. There are many out there, but most have fairly strict requirements. Some want "feel-good" stories, other specialize in vampire/werewolf/etc. erotic fiction.

I've been publishing with eXcessica for years. It doesn't make me much money, but then, I did it mainly as an experiment and never put much effort into promotion. It, as well as other publishers, can be a stepping stone.

I found trying to get agents or publishers on board was a lot of work and I understand they then expect you to do more work publicising the book yourself. So I selfpublish and this is my blogpost about how I got on with that: Where to publish your hot stuff.

I get good feedback on my work and I figure if any of it starts to do well, I could go to an agent or publisher and say, this book's picking up xx number of downloads so it looks like a winner, would you like to help me sell it better.

Since I wrote my blogpost there has been some evidence that Amazon Kindle are treating Indie writers with less than respect, you can find details on some recent threads in this forum.

:rose:

PS As you are new, just to say, if anyone posts anything weird here ignore it, they will find something else to distract them soon. If a fight starts, sit back and pass the popcorn to the left. Loveliest trolls in the world, some of my best friends etc etc, but highly intelligent and can tie you in knots if you feed them. ;)

At least until recently, agents didn't work in the realm of erotica. (It might be changing based on the success of "50 Shades").
