i suppose what i wanted to know was would we be destroyed by the forces before we saw the physical evidence? of course, the sun blowing up would probably be preceded by x-years of expansion and shit, denuding earth of life anyway, so it qualifies as a pretty stupid question

Subluminal= lower than light speed. It's theoretically possible that the shock wave could move at light speed but so improbable as to not be worth considering. We'd see the sun go boom then have maybe a couple of hours or even days to contemplate oblivion.
