I can't exactly call this bedtime reading but it's worth taking on board how difficult transitioning can be and how, because Nature is a bitch, troubles seldom come one at a time.

Mental problems live in the brain - so does being transgender. Happily, with well managed medical support, people transition and their lives are vastly improved, but for a smallish number of people with other accompanying conditions, hormone treatment can exacerbate or trigger more serious problems... and then waddya do? Come off the hormones and hope your life returns to a state of controllable misery? Do you deny HRT to someone with Asbergers or who is bipolar? Or find a balance?

I found this hormone-related complexity affects certain cancer patients, also. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I became familiar with others going through the same thing. For those whose surgery and/or radiation did not stop an aggressive and hormone-related form of the disease, some opted for chemical or physical castration to slow it down. Most of them had significant side effects, but those going into this experience with mental illness were more likely to have severe problems. Some of the men I met lost their sexual function, their urine control, and felt terrible most of the time.

This is a heartbreaking situation for trans people and for cancer patients. The last thing in the world they need is to be blamed or shunned for their situation.

But at Harvard University, Bailar decided to swim on the men's team. The transgender athlete is no longer winning races, but says in his first television interview he has won a personal battle by making a difficult choice and being true to who he is. Bailar, who may be the first openly transgender male athlete to compete in a NCAA Division I men's sport, tells his story to Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes, Sunday April 10 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

"I know I made the right decision," says Bailar. "But I think sometimes, 'Oh, I really wish I could compete as a girl because I want to win that race.' It's fun to win." It's a different world on the men's team, Bailar says. "I am working the same amount for 16th place. And that's okay...it has other kinds of glory in it.

At first, Bailar's plan was to lead something of a double life - living as a man on Harvard's campus, but still swimming as a woman on the women's team. Harvard women's swimming coach Stephanie Morawski had recruited Bailar as a woman, but encouraged Bailar to make the life-changing decision. "I was struggling watching Schuyler because he wanted to reinvent himself...as a male, but was being held back because of the athletic piece of it," she says.

The decision was agonizing, but it had to be done, says Morawski. "Schuyler had to do a lot of thinking about what mattered most... was it breaking records or was it really being happy," Morawski says. Harvard men's coach Kevin Tyrrell welcomed Schuyler to his team, as did his swimmers.

Bailar is taking testosterone now, which the NCAA permits in situations like Bailar's. It's lowered his voice and broadened his shoulders - and given him a bit of a moustache. "I shaved because I wanted to look nice for the interview," Bailar tells Stahl. He's also shaved more than 3 seconds off his previous best times in the pool, and is hoping to come back even more successful on the men's team next season.

Has anyone followed the reactions to the Stephen Fry interview over the last couple of days?
Not really a LGBT thing as such but one that impacts on anyone who has been a victim of abuse. I watched it before it hit the mainstream press and was kind gobsmacked by what he said.
Various worth people have criticised him, but the real eye-opener is in the responses to the video itself. The deluge of bile and hate amongst the postings is breath-taking and is especially ironic as I suspect it's from right-wing types who are anti-LGBT and probably anti-well-spoken-Brits. Still people are never slow to take an opportunity at kicking rape or child-abuse victims and Fry has given them a perfect excuse to rubbish victims everywhere, at any time.
He has since issued an apology of sorts, saying he 'utterly failed' to get across what he was trying to say - this from one of the most articulate media characters, or so we are told so often. I think I'll label him with the same badge I gave someone else recently - A very clever fool.

Senators Urge NBA to move All-Star Game

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators are urging the National Basketball Association to move the 2017 NBA All-Star Game away from Charlotte, North Carolina, because of a state law that limits protection for gay, lesbian and transgender people.

Democratic Sens. Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Patty Murray of Washington state, along with Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, wrote to NBA commissioner Adam Silver on Tuesday.

The senators said they "hold no ill will toward the people of Charlotte" but cannot "stand idly by as North Carolina moves to legalize and institutionalize discrimination."

The senators said the NBA made history when Jason Collins became the first openly gay athlete in a major U.S. sports league two years ago.

Last week, NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley also called on the NBA to move the 2017 All-Star Game to a different location.

"As a black person, I'm against any form of discrimination -- against whites, Hispanics, gays, lesbians, however you want to phrase it," Barkley told CNN. "It's my job, with the position of power that I'm in and being able to be on television, I'm supposed to stand up for the people who can't stand up for themselves. So, I think the NBA should move the All-Star Game from Charlotte."

Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy also called on the NBA to move the game, calling it a civil rights issue this week.

Earlier this month, the Atlanta City Council asked the NBA to move the 2017 All-Star Game to Atlanta because of the law. The NBA responded by saying it was hopeful a resolution could be reached.

The NBA's owners are expected to be updated on the situation surrounding the 2017 All-Star Game at this week's board of governors meetings, to be held on Thursday and Friday in New York.

On Tuesday, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory filed an executive order that extends further protections to state employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity, but left intact the bulk of the law, known as House Bill 2 (HB2).

McCrory also said he will ask lawmakers to file legislation later this month allowing people to sue in state court over discrimination. That right had been wiped out by the law.

But the statement said that his order will maintain gender-specific restroom and locker-room access in government buildings and schools. He once again condemned a Charlotte ordinance passed earlier this year that allowed transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity, calling it "a solution in search of a problem."

His announcement came as fallout widens over the law he signed last month that would limit protections for gay, lesbian and transgender people.

The NFL said earlier this month it would not move its May 23-25 meetings from Charlotte despite the law.

The NCAA, which is scheduled to hold men's basketball tournament games in Greensboro in 2017 and Charlotte in 2018, issued a statement last month saying it's monitoring the situation and takes diversity into account when it chooses its event sites.

The guy sitting behind the commissioner in the photo is the great Michael Jordan, who is currently one of the owners of the Charlotte based team, the Hornets.

Lots of political pressure and fan base pressure on the state of NC. The NBA is expected to make a statement today.

I'm glad to see that they're doing this as the All-Star weekend for the NBA is a pretty big deal and it's a large plum for any city who is designated as the host. The Governor is scrambling, but think it's going to be one of those things that they may change the law just to keep the revenue stream coming, but not change anybody's hearts and minds about the issues.

Looks like money is finally talking. Supposedly NC has already lost tens of millions of dollars due to event cancellations and several companies who've decided not to proceed with expansions or new facilities in the state. Big companies who are already based there aren't likely to pull up stakes but they may not make additional investments.

I’ve gone from anger to depression following recent events and even considered posting a separate thread about this problem. I’ve looked all over the site and there’s nothing - it’s like it isn’t even going on. Even the GB is silent about it… and that’s the reaction over the USA from what I can see. Sure, the rednecks are doing what they do ( being hypocritical ) but the majority of people seem to being keeping quiet. I can only assume it’s because they have swallowed the BS from the transphobes or just don’t know what to make of it.
It’s been interesting to see the different reactions from the musical/entertainments world: some cancelling gigs, but Cyndi Lauper is making a point by going ahead with her tour dates and giving the proceeds to fighting HB2.

There’s understandably a lot of raised emotions on both sides. The anti-abortion-homo/transphobic-witch-hunters insisting that they are protecting their women folk ( instead of beating them at home ) and introducing completely unnecessary legislation. They hate gay people and hate transgender people, but they’re also the sort that hate their neighbours, their kids, blacks, Europeans…. The only thing they love are guns and shemale porn - because they’re straight, but they love cock too. Who doesn’t?

On the LGBT side, we have a bunch of knuckle-dragging, bible-bashing, fascists telling us we shouldn’t exist, that we are an abomination before God and all that is American and decent. We are pedo’s and rapists and that “gay-panic” is a legitimate defence for murder.

Everyone needs to calm the fuck down, because this isn’t going to get sorted out without some level-headed grown-ups getting off their lazy asses and putting things back the way they should be. I can’t see that happening anytime soon - there is too much anger and fear. The show still has some time to play this out before Reason, Truth, Honesty and Integrity get a look-in.
The key to this is to garner enough financial and legal support to play the long game. I’ve seen posts on Tumblr showing how going door to door and speaking to people, is about the best way to educate people and open their minds. You can’t present a voice of reason when someone is screaming “Fire” over your shoulder.

The BBC is following some of it. There's a lot of information being passed around on Facebook by people like (not surprisingly) Jessica Udischas (Manic Pixie Nightmare Girls) and Sophie Labelle (Assigned Male) and groups like Keep Locker Rooms Safe. LGBT news sites like the Advocate and others are also keeping their eyes on the situations, as are the ACLU and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Most US news media report on recent developments with (by and large) relatively neutral positions. It's certainly not a case of 'out of sight out of mind' - at least not yet.

There is an America, and then, there is an Amerika. Living here, and being an activist, I am very familiar with the activities of both camps. The latter has its roots in slavery, and was most recently fostered with four decades of fear-based media, really heating up during the Reagan era with fear/hate radio, and then progressing into television and electronic media.

Take heart. With people like Charles Barkley siding with Americans rather than Amerikans, this is not a situation where the issue is being swept under the rug.
