So called 'family values', religion, paranoia, racism all get paraded through the hall of hatred. Throwing in the endemic transphobia amongst the dozen loud-mouth Beavis and Buttheads of the GB has turned Lit toxic for me.

Sticky,

This toxicity you speak of has been building for a long time in the U.S , mainly through the proliferation of hate radio, hate TV, and hate internet, and has now reached a crescendo with the advent of mega-bully Donald Trump.

The other day, I heard a Republican politico on TV bemoaning the fact that none of the other Republican candidates had done what Hillary Clinton did recently by clearly stating that a bigot like Trump is unqualified to be President. The reason why this could not take place during the Republican primaries is obvious-- the Republican candidates were all pandering to a bigoted Republican base, those scapegoating Americans who take pride in ignorance and xenophobia.

The toxicity you experienced on the GB is just some of that hate and that know-it-all attitude we experience daily in America. The Republicans will need to be defeated in November, once again, as Obama did during the past two elections. This time, I hope the haters will be beaten by a landslide, causing the Republican Party to finally reconsider its rejection of reason and its tendency to scrap all principles in their desire to "win".

In the meantime, it might be best to find internet forums that are monitored well enough that a thread on "Transgender" can't be totally hijacked by bullies who are legends in their own minds. This includes the "cute" GBers who think everything is a big joke and other people's lives do not count-- that was Rush Limbaugh's cop-out every time anyone called him on some of his egotistical rants. Limbaugh was one of the founders of hate radio back in the 1980s.

I need a break from Lit, also. See ya...

The Swedish Study Misquote

The Swedish Study - 2011
I read and responded to an article today in the NYT which features a misquote that keeps coming up again and again. I'd like you all to be familiar with the facts, so if you see it come up you can maybe slap it down too.
The NY article "...It is especially important for transgender individuals seeking treatment to know the risks involved. Long-term studies of people who underwent sex reassignment surgery have been conducted in Sweden and Denmark, where excellent population-wide medical records are kept.

A Swedish team from the Karolinska Institute and the University of Gothenberg followed 324 people who underwent sex reassignment surgery and compared them with matched controls in the general population. After an average follow-up of 11.4 years, men and women who had sex reassignments had death rates three times higher from all causes. Suicide rates were especially high, suggesting “the need for continued psychiatric follow-up” among those undergoing sex change, the authors wrote....
"

This gives the impression when taken out of context, that transitioning increases the chances of suicide and mental health issues. The key fact that is conveniently left out is that the higher rate of suicide post-op is higher than the birth-sex control group ie the general population and hence there is a need for more follow-ups.

Yes, the suicide rate is appalling amongst trans people - often cited that 41% of transgender people attempt suicide. The figure falls to around 4% post-op, which is still higher than the general population but better than pre-op, but then the public at large do not suffer the same level of discrimination.

When interviewed, the author of the Swedish study, Dr Cecilia Dhejne, stated
"..the study does not show that medical transition results in suicide or suicidal ideation. The study explicitly states that such is not the case and those using this study to make that claim are using fallacious logic."

This study is often cited as a genuine scientific result by a certain DrMcHugh as a means of furthering his opinions of transgender surgery. Dr McHugh subscribes to a small group of like-minded psychologists, the American College of Pediatricians, which is a recognised hate group, which supports reparative therapy, a practise the Obama administration is seeking to outlaw.

The full Dhejne study article can be found here: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0016885

From the "Strengths and Limitations" section:

It is therefore important to note that the current study is only informative with respect to transsexuals persons health after sex reassignment; no inferences can be drawn as to the effectiveness of sex reassignment as a treatment for transsexualism. In other words, the results should not be interpreted such as sex reassignment per se increases morbidity and mortality. Things might have been even worse without sex reassignment.

In other words, anybody who's read the study and still cites it as "transition causes suicide" is deliberately lying.

Another finding from that study that's often (mis-)cited is the 'male pattern regarding criminality'. Specifically, convictions for violent crimes in the trans groups (both MTF and FTM) did not differ from those of male controls, which is taken (by transphobes, i.e. not the study's authors) to mean that trans women (and trans men, if anybody bothers to talk about them at all) behave like men in terms of violent crimes. The inference that they then draw from this is that trans women are 'still men' and can't be trusted around women or children.* The authors, however, emphasized in the paper that this is only true for the subgroup that underwent reassignment prior to 1989 and note that "ince then, treatment has evolved with improved sex reassignment surgery, refined hormonal treatment, and more attention to psychosocial care that might have improved the outcome."

The first author, Cecilia Dhejne, stated in an interview with Transadvocate that:

"As to the criminality metric itself, we were measuring and comparing the total number of convictions, not conviction type. We were not saying that cisgender males are convicted of crimes associated with marginalization and poverty. We didn’t control for that and we were certainly not saying that we found that trans women were a rape risk. What we were saying was that for the 1973 to 1988 cohort group and the cisgender male group, both experienced similar rates of convictions. As I said, this pattern is not observed in the 1989 to 2003 cohort group.

The difference we observed between the 1989 to 2003 cohort and the control group is that the trans cohort group accessed more mental health care, which is appropriate given the level of ongoing discrimination the group faces. What the data tells us is that things are getting measurably better and the issues we found affecting the 1973 to 1988 cohort group likely reflects a time when trans health and psychological care was less effective and social stigma was far worse.

The author is suggesting that the types of crimes might differ between male controls and the trans groups** and that the similarity in conviction rates disappears when better health and psychological care are made available and social stigma decreases.

* Why men in general should be allowed around women or children is something they completely gloss over, preferring not to admit that the vast majority of sexual offences are committed by cisgender men.

** The author implies that the crimes for which trans people are convicted could be related to their social marginalization. I might add that conviction rates might also differ, as marginalized groups tend to get worse treatment by justice systems in general. That is, trans people may commit fewer crimes than cis men yet have higher conviction rates, leading to similarity in overall numbers of convictions. The phenomenon of 'walking while trans' (or black) is an excellent example of these issues.

Thanks H
I wasn't going to mention the crime-related stuff given my record for car theft and handling stolen goods, but it's time i faced those things. all the same, I still can't walk past a Porsche without that old tingly finger feeling  :D

Hey... so, umm... I'm gonna be starting hormones probably in the next month or so (depends on how far booked out the good endos are). I'm stoked, but I'm also a little worried about emotional changes. I've always had a pretty shitty and erratic temper which stems from problems with anxiety. My work is very high-intensity and I'm just wondering whether I should take special care not to be batshit while I'm there. How did it affect you all when it first kicked in? Was the mindset change gradual or sudden?

...And how often do you pee on anti-androgens? That's pretty relevant to work. I'm often too busy to take off and go.

I started on 2mg Estradiol tablets and 150mg Spiro when I was 18 and I didn't notice any diuretic effect, but sometimes the dose of Spiro can be double that. Why not ask to to start low and see how it goes? That's prolly what they'll suggest anyway. Your bloods will inform how your meds need to be adjusted and it's important that that information is available for those decisions - so one step at a time.

You'll know that the hormones won't change any underlying characteristics, but they may change your frame of mind. I became a lot calmer, but how much of that was due to the relief of finally being on the drugs, as much as their effect, I'm not sure. I did feel a bit weirded at first but you get used to it and if you know you are headed in the right direction, then that is a really positive feeling that can help you through. From about two or three weeks in I found myself reacting differently to situations: suddenly welling up and wanting to cry over stupid things ( classic huh?! ) and sometimes bawling my eyes out for a whole evening almost.... almost because I could? Does that make any sense?

I think you'll find you can focus on work in just the same way, but then suddenly BooM - you get tripped by something you didn't see coming emotionally. Those are things that still happen but I'm wise to them now - I've (re)learnt how my emotions work.

I suspect you're quite hard on yourself and set yourself high standards, even though I'd guess you are super-efficient running at only 50%. You are not losing anything of yourself, such as the things you pride yourself in, but you may want to think of the initial period as like emotional flu. Don't beat yourself up too much over work, because after all this is something bigger than that and in the end, instead of feeling you're being torn in different directions, things ought to feel more in tune.

What transgender people and their families really don't need is for old school gay actors patronising them. This is typical of the mindset of that generation who make sweeping generalisations based on their own experience and not looking at the facts: like the fact that trans kids commit suicide because they feel so distraught, not because they like flouncing around in dresses until they discover they're gay. Yes, Rupert great care is needed in caring for and ultimately helping kids decide, but you're caught up in the media misquote-world and frankly, citing Caitlyn Jenner as you go-to reference says it all.
Shut up, you silly old man

Rumour mongering and gossip is never kindly meant. His failure to check facts reveals his transphobia

Yeah, Lyle Shelton is a nasty piece of work. Concern troll who "just wants to protect the kids" (but only the cis ones, and only against the threats that fit his agenda).

I'm just gonna say I'm a human fucking being. Self identity has a price most people can't afford to pay. It's a huge step to walk out the front door, honest with who you are in the eyes of the world, despite what others may think or say...... In the end the only thing that really matters is are you happy with who you are as a person?👠👠👠Kant

Hi - I just read your post in the panties thread and I wondered. To me it's obvious that clothes don't define your sexual orientation any more than it does your gender id, so what's the driver to you to wear women's clothes? Did you ever seriously question your gender?

I have never questioned my gender. I've worn women's clothes so long it seems perfectly natural for me to wear them. I'm comfortable being a man, but I love to look like a woman:)👠👠👠Kant...

Guess you could say I love being unique in who I am:)

Thanks. One of the things I have to keep reminding myself, is that most people don't question their gender even if they do question their sexuality at certain stages of their life.
It looks like you edge towards Goth so no chance of swapping frocks ;) :D

If someone has gone to the trouble of growing breasts, the least you can do is not misgender them. It's disrespectful, even in a porn thread

Thanks Coach - I PMd you as well but wasn't meaning to rub salt in the wound. Besides, androgynous boys/men are hot and deserve a thread like that to themselves :rose:
I feel guilty mentioning it, but from my perspective that's how I feel. If I said nothing I'd feel worse.

After an extensive enquiry, with representatives from concerned parties the UK Government Equalities Office has issued a response
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa..._Committee_Report_on_Transgender_Equality.pdf

I haven't had a chance to go through it completely myself, but here it is. Not wishing to muddy the waters so soon after they have been poured, but I saw several references to European Law. Fuck knows how that will pan out now.
