Asians Thread

the sheer entreprenuerism and energy taking place in this ancient place is amazing.. a year ago there was only one or two cafes and now there are at least 100..... and almost all low key and tastefully done, a new Chinese chic is evolving with little crass commercialization or gaudiness.

will you buy night jewels from this man???

Beautiful work, hong! Thank you so much for sharing it.

thanks tortoise... I love your av and title too.... very cool...

I usually post most of my non-erotic photos on my Artsy Fartsy Hong and Gusty thread, but often neglect it in favor of saucy Gusty and Hong pics.....(I have so many cool photos that need to be posted on the Artsy thead  )

Wow great pictures hong..... Is Hou Hai is part of the Forbidden garden (Yi Hua Yuan)? Seems like there is life again in the old city central again. Although I wonder, was those stores built on the old hu ton? Or they were built around that lake?

Great pictures as always.... hope to see more from you :)

Thanks erc... no, Hou Hai is not part of the Yuan Ming Yuan or the Yi He Yuan (summer palace), but is really part of the network of lakes and canals that links the Forbidden City (zi jing cheng) to the Yi He Yuan (summer palace).. the closest and most famous lake to the forbidden city is Zhong Nan Hai (middle south sea), where the leaders of China live.. the next one up is Bei Hai (north sea) which has a beautiful tall white Tibetan Stupa on a peninsula in it.. followed by Shi Cha Hai (sort of connecting sea) and then Hou Hai.... (back sea)...

WOW!!! didn't know I could put that together !! I am not sure about where the Yi Hua Yuan is..... also there are quite a few preserved "prince's" palaces in the neighborhood including a beautiful one open to the public that Sun Yat Sen's wife, Song Ching Ling, resided in.

and yes there is new life in the old city center again.... most of those bars/stores are more remodellings of buildings facing the lake on the old hutongs. Real Estate prices for remodelled Si He Yuans (Courtyard homes) in that area have gone through the roof, as this area is becoming a truly unique and rather chic area to live in. For good or bad, I do not know

thanks hong,
I meant Yi He Yuan not Yi Hua Yuan....... sounds like you really know the old Beijing well. I always want to visit there some day. Beijing, Hangzhou, Xian, Nanjing and Luoyang are the cities I really want to visit, with all the histories.

I guess the re-development of the older buildings are always unavoidable. Although I would wish that at least part of the older downtown can be maintained, maybe changing it into a museum or something. The balance between modernization and preservarance of the history is always a tricky question. But I surely hope Beijing doesn't change into another Shanghai, without much trace of history. Just my opinion.

I am with you all the way on that one.... and this is one reason I feel Beijing is so much better than Shanghai, though my Shanghai buddies will diss me for that one. Too much in Beijing has already been torn down, but I do believe that the govt. has finally woken up to the need to preserve... though the money real estate developers command unfortunately does prevail at times here :( I so wish I could also take more time off to travel more around China as there are soo many cool places to visit.
