Art - oil paintings

Not all of his paintings look like an illustration of a film noire but a lot of them are. He's got an excellent eye and tells a good story. A generation ago that would have gotten him blasted by academic critics. Now that we no longer care what they think, he does quite well.

Would you almost categorize some of his art, hum…or say that some of his art falls into the “cuckold” type theme? Some of the art does suggest a sexual mfm theme

When this was taken down for it's 100-year service, there were a few square feet of "unknown" bits. Suitable re-frames and re-installed, it's the famous "The Militia of Cptn Franz Banning Coch":-

I find that most painters have some paintings I like and the majority I don't care for that much. I love Walter Crane for one painting- The Horses of Neptune. Its a small painting and its the only one I have found of his that I like. Strangely he was an illustrator and not a painter.

I also love a lot of the paintings of Theo van Rysselberghe, particulaly those of Maria von Seth. I think they are beautiful. He was a Flemish pointalist and when I found a painting of his in a gallery I was simply blown away- the colours are so vibrant that the other paintings in the gallery look drab.

I also love the paintings of Tom Roberts- they are so lovingly rendered and express the history of Australia in a wonderfully human way.

I acknowledge the great painters but sometimes there are others who when discovered give me such a lot of joy for their vitality and their being different. We seem to find the famous so easily yet , often, their fame is dubious. Often they achieved their recognition for a new concept they introduce to art- eg- Seurat- pointalism; Davinci- backgrounds; Rembrandt- the appearance of movement; Raphael- portraits that were at an angle different from anterior or lateral etc. Sometimes I have found exponents who seem to exploit these advances in ways that please me more than the originators. I'm not going to say I'm an expert- I'm not- But I am the world's foremost expert in knowing what I like!

I suppose art like beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Most artists I don't "Get".

On a visit to a museum of Modern Art I saw a painting on the wall that reminded me of nothing more than someone running a motorcycle tire in paint then rolling it across the canvas. What the hell is that supposed to be?

I like what looks good to me.

Wyland. (I have a couple of his pieces.)
Remington

I also have a couple of oil Landscapes done by local artists that look nice to me.

If the truth be told most posters here own copies of Velvet Elvis and wolves.

My Dad kept a print of Toulouse Latrec hanging in the stair well to his garage.
It was a print of three women, two short "ugly" women on either side of a taller, younger "beautiful" woman.

He laughed every time he saw it and told me the picture 'spoke to him."
He said. that the two older women had gotten the younger one drunk and were selling her ass all over town, before she sobered up. I presume Paris.

You never know how people will react to art.

One of my favorite American painters is John Koch and one of my favorite Koch's is Interlude.

We can presume that the painter in the background is Koch and the woman in the orange robe is Mrs. Koch. I love the interplay between the comfortable, domestic scene in front (artist domestic, that is) and the expression on Koch's face in the background. He really, really hates that painting. I know. I've been in that stage frequently myself! :D
