Argh - Computer help!

/me cusses and swears

So I plug in the drive, and yes I did remember power too, then turn on the computer. It starts up, checks and recognises the CD drives, then stops. It can't 'see' the new drive, or the old one if the new one is attached (primary or secondary.) What am I doing wrong? Do ya think?

Your bios may be too old to recognize the large hard drive.

Put both drives to CS (cable select) with the newer drive closest to the end of the cable.

Some drives are just too dom, they won't let you slave other drives to them ...lol

when i install a new hard disk i always like to make sure all my drivers are up to date ... my motherboard is pretty new so they are bringing out new bios updates pretty regular and it also has some cool software to check for updates for you ... which is what i said i would be install ... not flashing the bios just installing the update software which is on the motherboard chipset cd

but yeah if there is a new non-beta bios i will probably flash it

I've been searching for a bios update - but I already have the latest. Is it possible that that there will be no way my machine can handle this drive?:(

Can you describe cable select in a bit more detail? I've tried disconnecting the old drive all together, just to see if it can recognise the new one.

Look at the back of the drive, right near where the ribbon cable connects to it. You should see something like this ...

::::

with a jumper on one of them

No jumper the drive is slaved
to the far right is commonly master
Left one is commonly cable select

ok, so my old drive has this . . .

[:]: : :

My new drive has this . . .
:[:] : :

Should I change the jumper on the new drive?

Which side of the pins is closest to the power?

My diagram is with the power to the right, the drive upside down

And I forgot to add, you were correct your PC may not be able to recognize a drive of that capacity. See if you can recognize it alone, by itself.

Argh!!! Thanks for the info.

So if I try connecting this up using the end connection on the ribbon, and power it up. Then start the computer it should recognise the HD, then we're in business. Or, I'm up shit creek without a paddle?

Usually if you look on the PC board by the pins you'll see them labeled

Below is from a WD drive

Fuck it, I give up. This machine can't handle 40Gb, or at least I hope that's what the problem is. I'll take it back tomorrow and hope they'll exchange it for a 20

What is the machine? How old? Machines that are even a couple of years old should be able to handle 40 GB drives.

I would think that it should be able to recognize the drive, but since you are having problems maybe I am wrong.

I'll do more research then before I give up. Thanks. Would it be a bios update that would be relevant, or am I looking in the wrong place (I'm pretty sure that it is the latest release :()?

Ahem...I'mVan, sometimes that cable select shit doesn't work.
And i think you have to have the right cable also.

What kind of hard drive did you buy?
Sometimies the hard drive is DOA right out of the box.

OK, I found a key, it's on the CS jumper thingie. Other options are PK or DS.

It's a Maxtor D740X 40Gb. It might be nice for it to be DOA, would explaine away my probs.

Ok i opened my new spare maxtor 40 gig (different model)

did you pick your jumper config. out of the book or guess?

There is a key on the case of the drive itself. I didn't pick one intentionally, looking at the key I can tell that it was shipped with CS selected.

Take a look in the installation guide. In mine its on page six.

also look at the cylinder liminition jumper infromation. might be a clue there.

The most important thing is to take your time, read & understand everything so you will know why you are doing what you are doing. don't be afraid to try different ways.

I leave the hard drive on the outside of the case until i am sure everything is working ok before i screw it in.

I had one hard drive that did nothing but make banging noises!

Instalation guide? I got a static resistant wraped drive. That's all.
