I am a kiwi. I am very proud to be a New Zealander :)

And I thought we Americans were bad....sheesh....

I'm proud to be Black, but I had little to do with the selection.

the reason i asked is because lots of english people like saying they are ashamed of being english and i think you should be proud of where you were born.

the people who are usualy ashamed of england are left wing labour voters.

I guess I just don't know a lot of Labour, because all the English I've met have been as proud as Southerners about their sceptered isle.

It's funny though, because they've usually ended up living here.

You're not coming over are you, Mac?

You should stay. If you come here you'll be like all the other English.

They'll tell you how lovely Britain is while they're applying for an extended stay visa. Elton John lives in Atlanta for crying out loud! Are you sure you don't want him back?

On the whole I'd have to say "yes I'm proud of my country of birth", it's not always a popular view to hold here as it can offten be mistaken for nationalism.

Part of the problem is that ultra right wing fascist's tend to shout out long and loud how proud they are to be English/British and the rest of us who are mearly patriots can get mistaken for for them so we tend to downplay our pride, but like I said I am proud of my country.

One thing I'm proud of about the UK is the fact that altough we are a tiny nation we account for almost 50% of all patented inventions.....even more than the japanese who sponsered the report that found this out.

I'm proud to be British. I was born in England, I am English and like it, but I have Grandparents from each of the Nations of the Union so my national identity is a mix really.

All of that post colonial guilt stuff seems off to me. I didn't do any of it. And a lot of what the British did for the Empire was good. No more Suttee (a moment of mild amusement for people who grew up watching a certain ursine glove puppet) in India, and so many places brought into the western world and given a language which has made it easier for them to do business in that world.

I'm not saying that British history smells of roses, but I'm not a bad person and don't deserve to be ostracised because of where I was born. People who say that they are ashamed to be English (it's always English. When is the last time someone said they were ashamed to be a Scot?) they are either trying to deflect someone else's English-bashing elsewhere, or fail to appreciate that there is a good and a bad side to everything.

When I was a bit younger I went abroad on my own a few times. I retrospect I was a bit immature because I spent most of my time saying things along the lines of , 'well back home we have...'
I missed out on the opportunity to see so much more than I did.
Never let your nationality blind you. But never be blind to your nationality. If you do either you will lose out.

Yes, I am proud to be an American.

My heritage is mixed with German and Finnish.......but I was born in the US of A and proud of it.

Very PROUD to be an American......

(Tips helmet back up over the eyes....eases up from the foxhole in the back yard...does a quick 360 degree scan of the skies for Airliners full of rabid, drooling fanatics looking for some helpless schmuck to flatten.....)

Born and raised in the southern part of the USA. Very proud to be able to call myself an American. May she always be one of the great nations on the planet.

May she always be ready to answer the call of our brothers and sisters who reach out to us in those terrible times of need, no matter where.

(Bandleader, you may now start playing Rocky Top.....)

Phantom.

Your question assumes the country we live in and are proud of is also the one we were born in. People do move around, you know.

I wasn't born here, but I am proud of the U.S.A.

The jibe against the English I can live with, Bluespoke. But 'joshing'? I wouldn't use language like that in front of my own dear grandmother. What's next? Lashings of ginger beer?
