These sites are interesting. You enter your name and it does a search to see if you're owed any money.

What happens is that when people switch checking accounts, they sometimes leave money to cover outstanding checks then forget about it. Or maybe some stock certificates got misplaced (or you never knew you had them). But all these things remain on a company's books, and after a period of abondonment, the company is obligated to turn them over to the state. If you're the rightful heir, it's yours. You cold even claim property that had belonged to your great-great-grandparents.

There is about 3 billion every year that gets reported. Some estimates say that one out of every eight people has money he or she could claim.

You might want to not just search for yourself but for your relatives - especially parents - grandparents - great grandparents.

The people who owe me money are not on that list.

My ex wife owes me many thousands that I have loaned her over the years, but I will probably never see it - I have written it off as a bad debt on my taxes. She does send me a fifty dollar check about once every six months; I told her the last time I loaned her $500 to save her ass, that I was not going to loan her any more money until she paid back that particular loan. That was about 2 years ago and she has paid back about $100, but it works - she no longer asks me for money.

I loaned my kids money to buy a car and to move, and someday they will be in a place monetarily where they can pay it back, but right now they can't.

I haven't got my tax "refund/rebate" yet though - I wonder what is keeping it?
