These sites are interesting. You enter your name and it does a search to see if you're owed any money.
What happens is that when people switch checking accounts, they sometimes leave money to cover outstanding checks then forget about it. Or maybe some stock certificates got misplaced (or you never knew you had them). But all these things remain on a company's books, and after a period of abondonment, the company is obligated to turn them over to the state. If you're the rightful heir, it's yours. You cold even claim property that had belonged to your great-great-grandparents.
There is about 3 billion every year that gets reported. Some estimates say that one out of every eight people has money he or she could claim.
You might want to not just search for yourself but for your relatives - especially parents - grandparents - great grandparents.
