It was used against me in PP's latest "bush bash" thread. I like the label, and what it means to me. Yup! If you don't believe in a baseline of values for yourself, you'll end up like 90% of Europe, following any position that's declared, "trendy!"

* a movement or attitude stressing strict and literal adherence to a set of basic principles
- fun·da·men·tal·ist

*Anyone else an American Fundamentalist? :D

I am a John Wayne American.

Hell yeah I am a American Fundamentalist.

I think most Vets are. And I think people with a little age on them might lean that way. People who have lived through some shit, not just read about it in school.

I think when one says that I am an American that that is implied. Too bad that we have gotten to the point that we have to "qualify" what American means...

I'm a good old Southern Boy who don't take kindly to anyone bad mouthing the US of A. I don't accept the left wing, I don't believe the right wing. I take everything I hear with a grain of salt and know that my Gov't is NOT perfect.

I am in no way, shape or form a fundamentalist, at least in the religious sense.

However, I do believe that the way the word is often used by those on the Left, is an example of politically correct stereotyping, ignorance and bigotry.

Now there you go, engaging in vicious name-calling confirming everything the left suspects about the hateful right...

well said chuckus. i come from the old school of, "you leave me alone and i'll leave you alone and if you don't i'll get red neck on your ass quicker than you mom can make grits".

fundamintalist? i believe in the fundamental rights outlined by the founding fathers. i believe that a lot of those rights have been taken away and a lot of the others have been watered down by politicians that have to do something to justify their existance. so maybe i'm a bit of a fundamentalist.

I was on that thread too, so I guess that makes me one.

Excuse me, I'm just gonna go clean up my bookmarks then go play a game.

I grew up in a fundamentalist cult. I think that I tend to react to the use of that word. I am died-in-the-wool American, but I am not sure I like the modifier that implies my 'strict and literal adherence' is automatic or reflexive. Most, if not all of what the founding fathers of this country espoused were ideals that they believed existed independently of the 'American' fundamentals. In other words, the precepts were transcendent of anything they might say or do, and what they did say and do, did not become the foundation for those ideals, but rather, were built upon them.

That said, the primary undertone, was that personal freedom was a privilege that we collectively protect for all. I think it's a delicate balance at times, and requires sensitivity and sagacity...not 'strict and literal adherence' that often times is associated with laziness that is unwilling to move beyond its own purposes to understand others. I think freedom is a moving target, and at any moment I may be asked to willingly give up a portion of mine(discernment is the key) so that you might more fully enjoy yours. Freedom should be a win/win scenario.

Damn! I knew I should of kept my mouth shut. I'll excuse myself out of here.

That is where you shut your mouth, remove your hands from the keyboard, and log off. ;) Go play a game, it's lots more fun. :D

Ditto!!

To what he said.....

except I'm a good old "northern boy"....who feels the same way...

If being a fundamentalist means believing that the Constitution is an excellent roadmap for society, then I qualify.

Those who have spent an extended period of time in a country without the basic freedoms and the system of checks and balances of power described in the Constitution and subsequent amendments have a special understanding of just how precious these documents are.
