I mean I look around at Monster posters. All I seem to see are misspellings. Must mean other posters are secure in their opinions - they don't need to draw attention/.

I hear one of those hideous "BOOM, BOOM, BOOM" noises coming down the net, sure enough its another rash of bad spellers, so insecure they cover thier inadequacies up with a lot of posts so they don't see threads with people laughing at them.

What's Up with that anyways?

I TRULY don't know what you mean.

Psst- fix your typos - quick!

Yes I am very insecure hence me still being a virgin, I do try to compinsate it by spelling as many word wrong in the shortest duration in the least amount of words as possible

Nope! In fact it's probably those who insist to correct EVERYONE on their spelling of each word, that are the insecure ones.

I think I discovered the perfect way of addressing this situation.

Anal spelling champs unite to end our terror of reading poorly written posts on the board. Those of you who are less than apt spelling students, be on the lookout. You will now face the ultimate correction.

OOOwwwwww you are going to be busy trolling 80% of the board......... get a life!

Spelling British/American

Can't help but chuckle at this thread - English spelling is wrong for you North Americans and vice versa but has anyone noticed the bad grammar and punctuation?!

Only kidding - don't we all write in colloquial English anyway?;)

While I am doing that, why don't you get a sense of humor? You're a writer, write yourself a personality!

What sould I be insecure about?

I spell as best as my mind will let me.
why be insecure about who I am.

as for why I post alote..... It's fun here.

you want to pick at my spelling.... go right the fuck ahead, but don't get mad when I yell at you for it and I will.... have before, will again.

What is with the people who spell so badly, yet claim to have gone to college? Is this acceptable in college? Don't they teach English there? My god, if this is the future of our country, we're in deep shit! If it only happens once in a while, no big deal. But when people can't spell the word "the", I have to really wonder why. One of the most basic words we have, and it gets spelled wrong. Sad.

And why the bashing of phonics? It's a legitimate teaching tool, IMO. Just because it may not be what you are used to, doesn't mean it's worthy of your contempt. You don't see anybody mocking the other teaching styles in this manner.

I don't that's very fair. Some people just can't spell.

I graduated cum laude (pulled down by a D and a F from my teen years) and would probably never make higher than a C in 7th grade spelling if I stayed there for 20 years. I do spell check my posts in email before I post them. Otherwise, you'd think I was Todd.

hi dilly baby

And, to contribute to the thread. I'm with April. Spelling is central to communicating your level of education and coincides directly with your ability to speak properly.

One of my pet peeves - speaking improperly.

I'm good - Happy New Year, babe! How are you?

You and me both... I agree about spelling - and you and I have both been here long enough to see more than a few threads on the subject... I wish the Search feature was fixed already - I'd bring back my "Spoiling is Impudent" thread...

Actually, "you" do. Although I'm sure the phonics bashing was meant to be a joke, in my experience, phonics is mocked less than, say, the teaching tool of whole language (which many claim is the reason for poor spellers).

I tend to differentiate between those who misspell an occasional word and those who have serious grammatical issues in their writing. It's a casual forum, no? Who cares if there are a few mistakes? Besides, where does one draw the line? I could cite the quote above for vague pronoun reference and a punctuation error, but that would just be plain silly.

I have a question for the bad spellers among us. I have a theory about spelling and I would like your memories before I create a class of bad spellers.

Were you good at those pattern problems in Math? example below so you'll know what I'm talking about.

a) 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ____, _____

b) 0, 1, 4, 9, 16, ______, _______

c) 1, 3, 7, 13, 21, 31, _____, _______

Shall we have a phonics vs. whole language vs. balanced literacy debate. We probably have enough Early Childhood educators here to do it now.

Although, I'd prefer a Four Blocks vs. Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading Debate.

I see quite a few mocking references to phonics at the GB. But what is whole language teaching? I think I've heard of it, but only here, and only vaguely.

And go right ahead with the critique of vague pronouns and punctuation error. I do believe the subject was spelling, though. :)

Numbers/math are logical. They don't have stupid rules like i before e except when it's not. Till you get to calculus. It's about as bad as spelling.

:(

Todd, you may just have proved my theory.

WD, give me some answers. Spelling is logical in its own way.

April, Whole Language was a way of teaching language arts that we bastardized from New Zealand. The way it was implemented here, primarily in California, there wasn't a lot of teaching of basic literacy skills. Rather than starting out reading and writing with easy, decodable books, children were starting out reading good literature.

Instead of the familiar...... Run, Spot, run. and I like milk, first graders would be reading books like Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see? Predictable and the kids could "read" it without actually learning the letter/sound relationships.

That's a hit the tip-top of the surface explanation. I've got lots of books and articles if you want more.
