Ok... I did a stupid thing.
I went to look in chat rooms on yahoo messenger.

NOTHING worth while.

HOWEVER, I was intrigued by a LOT of what appeared to be Arbabic or Persian text. I am sure it COULD be fer real, but was wondering if it was maybe a new trend of using a FONT that LOOKS like it... kinda like using dingbats?

Not new. Some of it is real, some of it is just a font.

hmmmm...
ok.
I guess I'll never know, as I cannot read Arabic. And don't care SO much as to try and copy past and change font or whatever is required to UNfont it.

It has been ages since I even ventured into a chatroom and had never seen it before.

I think a lot of it is probably real. I've chatted with a number of Arabs and Persians over the past few years, well, not since I started hanging out on Lit, but, anyway...sometimes they would forget to switch over, and would IM me in arabic or persian. There are tons of Arabs on Yahoo.

Ok!

Funny, I was thinking it was "what all the 'cool' kids were doing.

I did notice, what appeared to be, middle eastern handles.

There are a number of Saudi's and Kwuati's who hang in Yahoo chat. Their english is horrid and they do use arabic. They are mostly innocuous. But I would check out the Hobbie rooms for bomb making, weapons handling etc though. ;)

The ones I've "met" generally have very good English and actually prefer it in chat because Arabic is sometimes hard to read online. Also, most of them seemed pretty "normal" to me. The vast majority of them are, you know. They're just regular people living their lives and think terrorists are nuts, just like we do.

The problem with arabic online is that the routines that generate the script isn't real compatible with western servers. Arabic script doesn't use exactly one letter width for a character and the script reads right to left. To over come that problem the software has to convert the script to a graphic then throw it on the screen. Doing that makes the script come out fuzzy. Not really their fault, TK, just very different approach to written language.
